Reviewing the role of human papillomavirus in oral cancer using the Bradford Hill criteria of causation.

Human papillomavirus is a well-established risk factor for oropharyngeal cancer, although its role in oral cancer is still debated. Inconclusive evidence of its role in oral cancer is due to conflicting data arising from methodological differences, mostly due to the use of diagnostic tests with varying sensitivity and specificity. In addition, there is a lack of experimental data linking HPV to oral cancer. Recent epidemiological studies provide data on HPV prevalence in oral squamous cell carcinoma and other potentially malignant oral disorders. Further, molecular data from in vivo and in vit

Effect of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors on kidney outcomes of individuals with type 2 diabetes according to blood pressure levels.

AIMS: Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors have proved kidney-protective. Given that the SGLT2 inhibitors lower blood pressure (BP), the magnitude of their kidney benefits may vary depending on an individual's BP. Therefore, we investigated whether baseline BP modifies the effect of SGLT2 inhibitors on kidney function. METHODS AND RESULTS: This study included individuals with SGLT2 inhibitors or dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP4) inhibitors newly prescribed for type 2 diabetes using a nationwide epidemiological cohort and performed propensity score matching (1:2). The primary outcome

Mendelian randomisation: a tool for assessing causality in observational epidemiology.

Detection and assessment of the effect of a modifiable risk factor on a disease with view to informing public health intervention policies are of fundamental concern in aetiological epidemiology. In order to have solid evidence that such a public health intervention has the desired effect, it is necessary to ascertain that an observed association or correlation between a risk factor and a disease means that the risk factor is causal for the disease. Inferring causality from observational data is difficult, typically due to confounding by social, behavioural, or physiological factors which are

Periodontitis and Neuropsychiatric Disorders: Epidemiological and Mechanistic Evidence.

This review aims to critically analyze the epidemiological evidence and mechanistic insights linking periodontitis with the onset, progression, or severity of neuropsychiatric disorders. From an epidemiological perspective, eligible evidence was identified regarding disorders related to trauma, stress, anxiety, depressive, and bipolar disorders, whereas no studies meeting the predefined inclusion criteria were found for the remaining considered disorders. The strongest epidemiological evidence was observed for depressive disorders and anxiety- and stress-related conditions. However, the predom

Anterior uveitis for the comprehensive ophthalmologist.

Anterior uveitis presents a diagnostic challenge due to its wide array of etiologies and clinical manifestations. This narrative review aims to equip general ophthalmologists with a comprehensive understanding of anterior uveitis epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment. Particular emphasis is placed on developing a tailored and stepwise strategy, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, for the workup and treatment of anterior uveitis. Chest radiography and serologic testing for syphilis, human leukocyte antigen B27, and angiotensin-converting enzyme are appropriate routine investigations in c

Exploiting gene-environment interaction to detect adverse health effects of environmental chemicals on the next generation.

There is increasing evidence from epidemiological studies that genetic susceptibilities may modify the teratogenic effects of toxic chemicals. However, in contrast to tobacco smoke, few epidemiological studies have addressed environmental chemicals, such as polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, polychlorinated dibenzofurans and polychlorinated biphenyls in regard to genetic susceptibility. Recent studies, including the Hokkaido Study of Environments and Children's Health, have investigated the impacts of both environmental and genetic factors on children's development. Several xenobiotic-metaboli

Dramatic reduction of meningococcal meningitis among military recruits in Italy after introduction of specific vaccination.

Meningococcal meningitis is still a serious infectious disease with a mortality rate that can be as high as 10% even in developed countries. Military recruits are generally a high-risk group for meningococcal disease, with a reported incidence of four to ten times greater than that of the general population. In Italy the results of the National Meningitis Surveillance Programme showed a high attack rate of the disease among recruits in 1985 as well as in 1986, with 92 and 95% of the cases, respectively, caused by serogroup C and thus preventable. These findings led to the authorities' decision

[Genetics and epidemiology of retinoblastoma].

Recent studies of genetic epidemiology of retinoblastoma are reviewed, and major conclusions drawn are as follows: Retinoblastoma occurs in heritable or nonheritable form. The primary genetic change in the heritable form is a point mutation or deletion at a locus on 13 q 14. For the genesis of a tumor in either form, the loss or inactivation of both alleles at this locus is a prerequisite, although additional events may be needed for its development. Information about environmental risk factors for the occurrence of heritable or nonheritable retinoblastoma is still meager. Although viral etiol

Relationship Between Salt Intake and Cardiovascular Disease.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a predominant global health issue, with dietary salt intake recognized as a crucial modifiable risk factor. This review elucidates the multifaceted relationship between salt consumption and CVD, exploring both its direct and indirect effects. While early research emphasized salt's influence on blood pressure, contemporary studies highlight the combined effects of dietary habits and genetic factors on CVD risk. The paper underscores the complex biological mechanisms linking high salt intake to CVD, including its impact on blood pressure, direct cardiovascular eff

Early-Onset Colorectal Cancer: Epidemiology, Etiologic Pathways, and Emerging Prevention Strategies.

Early-onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC), defined as CRC diagnosed before age 50, is rising globally despite declining incidence in older adults, representing a growing public health concern. This review synthesizes current evidence on EOCRC epidemiology, molecular features, etiologic hypotheses, and clinical implications, with an emphasis on life-course risk. Epidemiologic data demonstrate a strong birth cohort effect, implicating generational exposures in disease pathogenesis. Younger patients more often present with symptomatic, advanced-stage disease and show a predominance of distal and rect

Europe's hotspot region for hypertension: the Balkans.

PURPOSE: Hypertension remains the leading modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and premature mortality worldwide. While its prevalence has declined across much of Europe in recent decades, this trend has not been observed in the Balkan region, where rates remain persistently high. This narrative review aims to synthesise current evidence on the epidemiology of hypertension in the Balkans and to explore potential determinants underlying this sustained burden. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a narrative review of available literature, including population-based surveys, repor

Evolution of infant nutrition.

Homo sapiens has developed during the course of over two million years. The social and physical conditions of life, the availability of milk and infant foods as well as the presence of diseases have all undergone radical transformations from the Stone Age, at first without and then with fire, to the hunter-gatherer, farmer-herder, agricultural and, now, developed societies. These changes in the human environment may have induced modifications in the length of pregnancy, the development of the neonate at birth, the duration of lactation, the composition of breast milk and use of weaning foods a

Potential relationship between cytomegalovirus and immunosenescence: Evidence from observational studies.

Immunosenescence (IS) occurs as a natural outcome of ageing and may be described as a decline in immune system flexibility and adaptability to sufficiently respond to new, foreign antigens. Potential factors that may precipitate IS include persistent herpesvirus infections, such as cytomegalovirus (CMV). Here, we conducted a review of the literature evaluating the potential association between CMV and IS. Twenty-seven epidemiologic studies that included direct comparisons between CMV-seropositive and CMV-seronegative immunocompetent individuals were analysed. The majority of these studies (n =

Epidemiological research on radiation-induced cancer in atomic bomb survivors.

The late effects of exposure to atomic bomb radiation on cancer occurrence have been evaluated by epidemiological studies on three cohorts: a cohort of atomic bomb survivors (Life Span Study; LSS), survivors exposed IN UTERO : , and children of atomic bomb survivors (F1). The risk of leukemia among the survivors increased remarkably in the early period after the bombings, especially among children. Increased risks of solid cancers have been evident since around 10 years after the bombings and are still present today. The LSS has clarified the dose-response relationships of radiation exposure a

Cost-effectiveness of glaucoma interventions in Barbados and Ghana.

PURPOSE: More than 90% of blindness worldwide exists in the developing world, but information on the social and economic burden and the cost-effectiveness of treatment in these settings is often limited or nonexistent. We demonstrate the use of computer modeling to simulate the current and future epidemiology, outcomes, and treatment of primary open-angle glaucoma in high-incidence populations of the developing world. METHODS: A previously validated vision model was modified to simulate the incidence progression and social and economic outcomes of glaucoma in Barbados, which was the source of

An epidemiological and molecular study regarding the spread of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium in a teaching hospital in Bogotá, Colombia 2016.

BACKGROUND: Enterococcus faecium is ranked worldwide as one of the top ten pathogens identified in healthcare-associated infections (HAI) and is classified as one of the high priority pathogens for research and development of new antibiotics worldwide. Due to molecular biology techniques' higher costs, the approach for identifying and controlling infectious diseases in developing countries has been based on clinical and epidemiological perspectives. Nevertheless, after an abrupt vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium dissemination in the Méderi teaching hospital, ending up in an outbreak, f

Non optimal temperatures and chronic cardiovascular diseases.

Extreme temperatures are emerging as major climate-sensitive drivers of chronic cardiovascular disease (CVD). Global warming has increased the frequency, duration, and intensity of heatwaves, while substantial cold-related risk persists, particularly in poorly insulated and socioeconomically vulnerable settings. Together, non-optimal temperatures account for millions of deaths annually, with a large and growing share attributable to CVD. In this narrative review, we synthesize epidemiological, mechanistic, and systems-level evidence linking heat and cold exposure to chronic cardiovascular outc

Linking Cardiovascular Disease and Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD): The Role of Cardiometabolic Drugs in MASLD Treatment.

The link between cardiovascular disease (CVD) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is well-established at both the epidemiological and pathophysiological levels. Among the common pathophysiological mechanisms involved in the development and progression of both diseases, oxidative stress and inflammation, insulin resistance, lipid metabolism deterioration, hepatokines, and gut dysbiosis along with genetic factors have been recognized to play a pivotal role. Pharmacologic interventions with drugs targeting common modifiable cardiometabolic risk factors, such as T2
