The IES Arrow-Dot was administered to 41 cocaine detoxification patients. The infant's characteristics influence the choice to some degree and, to a degree, a name affects the person who bears it. The interface between names and personal identity is illustrated clinically in syndromes of transsexualism and multiple personality, in twinning, and in the development of the ego-ideal.

The concept of fixation occupies an important position in psychoanalytic theory. The mechanism of fixations cannot be explained solely by means of the notions of regression and repetition. On the basis of a theory of depression in which depression is seen as the outcome of a fetishistic cathexis of the 'shadow of the object' set up in the ego as a 'depressive object', the author postulates that fixations become organized during the depressive movements of childhood.

The severity and nature of psychopathology in a group of learning disabled children was investigated. Compared to children in a normal control group, those in the learning disabled group manifested a significant degree of emotional maladjustment. They also exhibited disturbances in areas of ego functioning generally thought to be impaired in those with borderline personality organization. No linear relationship was found between severity of pathology and degree of underachievement.

This paper reviews the marked confusion surrounding the diagnosis of the hysterical personality disorder, which has resulted from the use of vague and at times contradictory criteria in making this diagnosis. It is recommended that the diagnosis be based exclusively on psychodynamic characteristics, and a specific psychodynamic formulation is offered for this disorder. The formulation is examined from the perspectives of genetic development, drive organization, and ego and superego organization.
