This review article discusses the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features and pathological changes of muscles, nerves and the synovial lining of the elbow joint. Typical imaging findings are illustrated and discussed. In addition, the cross-sectional anatomy and anatomical variants, such as accessory muscles and plicae are discussed. Injuries of the muscles surrounding the elbow joint, as well as chronic irritation are particularly common in athletes. Morphological changes in MRI, for example tennis or golfer's elbow are typical and often groundbreaking. By adapting the examination sequences…

BACKGROUND: Limited function of the upper limb is the main problem after radical therapy of breast cancer. The shoulder joint is most commonly affected. However, even the simplest movements involve entire muscle groups. The aim of this study was to assess elbow flexor and extensor function in women following treatment of breast cancer.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 47 women at a mean age of 62 years (range 45 - 77 years) post Patey mastectomy participated in the study. The function of muscles of the elbow joint (peak torque, work, power) was examined by isokinetic testing.
RESULTS: Statistically sig…

Fibrous dysplasia is a condition in which normal skeletal bone changes into fibroblastic stroma and immature bone. We report our experience … the distal ulnar shaft for postoperative tentative immobilization and preservation of the affected elbow joint movement. At two years after the operation, the range of motion of the affected elbow was 90 degrees in flexion and -35 degrees in extension. The range of motion in pronation and supination of the left forearm was normal. No evidence of recurrence w …

The objective of this study was to evaluate the osseous constraint related to forced forearm external rotation as the initial stage in a posterior elbow dislocation. Six joint specimens without soft tissues were examined in a joint analysis system developed for simulation of dislocation. The osseous stability, expressed as the maximal torque needed for pathologic external forearm rotation, increased from varus to valgus stress (P =.0001) and from 10 degrees to 90 degrees of elbow flexion (P =.012) and also tended to increase from forearm supination to pronation. The work of pathologic external

The Antley-Bixler syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by craniosynostosis, midface hypoplasia, radiohumeral synostosis, joint contractures, arachnodactyly, and femoral bowing and fractures. We report four cases with this disorder, all of which had craniosynostosis, midface hypoplasia with characteristic facial appearance, and contractures of bilateral elbow joints. However, femoral bowing, fractures, and arachnodactyly were not seen in our patients. In addition, proximal phalanges of the thumb and the great toe showed deformity of the delta phalanx in two cases. Characteristic features i…

Between July 1984 and October 1985 the elbow joints of 135 patients were examined by arthrosonography. Of these 97 patients suffered from rheumatoid arthritis, 4 from psoriatic arthritis, 2 from suspected ankylosing spondylitis, 1 from gout, and 27 patients were found to be normal. The equipment used was a Kretz sector scanner Combison 320 and a Siemens Sonoline SL linear scanner. The examination was divided into three parts: longitudinal and transversal scans of the fossa olecrani, the fossa coronoidea and fossa radii. We found, that inflammation of the elbow joint has to be evaluated separat…

The lateral collateral ligament (LCL) complex of the elbow is a capsuloligamentous structure, critical for elbow stability. Though isolated ligamentous injuries have been reported in literature, there are no studies reporting avulsion fractures of the lateral ligamentous complex of the elbow with joint incarceration in a child. An 11-year-old boy presented to the emergency department after a fall from height, with pain and swelling to the lateral side of his left elbow. Radiographs established a fracture of the lateral condyle and CT imaging confirmed an avulsion of the lateral ligamentous com

BACKGROUND: Capitellar osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) frequently results in radial head enlargement. However, due to the elbow joint's complex anatomy, deformities likely extend beyond just the radial head.
HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE: It was hypothesized that in patients with OCD treated with surgery, imbalances in bone morphology during growth would affect the entire joint, leading to postoperative clinical symptoms. The purpose of this study was to test this hypothesis through a 3-dimensional evaluation of morphological changes.
STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3.
METHODS:…

Complex radial head fracture and elbow instability can be treated with radial head arthroplasty. Good clinical results have been described after this surgical treatment. However, the revision and complication rate reported in the literature is concerning. This might be due to altered kinematics after radial head arthroplasty. Eight human native elbows were examined with dynamic radiostereometric analysis and compared with a radial head arthroplasty. Translations of the radial head in the x-, y-, and z-directions relative to the humerus and the ulna were measured. The radiocapitellar joint pres

Simultaneous ipsilateral fractures involving radial head and distal end of radius are uncommon. We present our thoughts on which fracture should be addressed first. A 68-year-old lady sustained an ipsilateral fracture of the right radial head and distal end of radius following a fall. Clinically her right elbow was posteriorly dislocated and right wrist was deformed. Plain radiographs showed an intraarticular fracture of the distal end of radius and a comminution radial head fracture with a proximally migrated radius. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed no significant ligament injuries. We
