Pupil- and gaze dynamics track emotion content in naturalistic speech.

Cortical tracking of speech features is a well-established marker of continuous speech processing, but far less is known about listeners' ocular responses to speech rhythm. Ocular responses are central to active sensing models in the auditory domain, where motor recruitment guides temporal speech prediction and attention allocation, potentially shaped by non-rhythmic cues, such as emotions. Here, we ask whether listeners' pupil response and eye movements track the acoustic speech signals and to what extent this tracking is modulated by emotion-related top-down factors, including subjective emo

Visual electrophysiology in carotid endarterectomy: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: To systematically evaluate changes in ocular electrophysiological function following carotid endarterectomy (CEA) and to determine whether electroretinography (ERG) and visual evoked potentials (VEP) can detect postoperative functional recovery of the retina and visual pathways. METHODS: A systematic search of MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science was conducted from inception to August 2025. Observational studies assessing electrophysiological outcomes (ERG, VEP, multifocal recordings, or electrooculography [EOG]) before and after CEA in adults with carotid stenosis were included. S

Pediatric SleepNet: a deep learning network for reliable pediatric sleep staging across developmental stages.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Manual sleep staging in pediatric populations is challenging due to developmental variability and limited scoring consistency, especially in infants and toddlers. We developed a multimodal deep learning model for pediatric sleep staging and evaluated its performance across a broad age range and diverse clinical subgroups. METHODS: We trained a U-Net-inspired encoder-decoder model (pediatric SleepNet) using 9-channel input signals: electroencephalography (EEG), electrooculography (EOG), and chin electromyography (EMG) using 35-epoch segments from clinical pediatric polysomnog

Psychedelics relax predictive processing in the post-acute period by remodeling cortico-cortical feedback circuits.

Serotonergic psychedelics (e.g., psilocybin, LSD) have potential to treat psychiatric disorders, with therapeutic effects lasting days to weeks after a single dose. Prominent theories suggest that psychedelics have a lasting effect on hierarchical brain circuits, reducing top-down influence on information processing to facilitate an unbiased, bottom-up reassessment of the world, but direct and concrete evidence for such an effect is lacking. Here we directly tested this hypothesis in both humans and mice, assessing predictive processing in the fronto-visual system in the days after a single ps

Abnormal neural oscillations in clinical high risk for psychosis: a magnetoencephalography method study.

BACKGROUND: Neural oscillations directly reflect the rhythmic changes of brain activities during the resting state or while performing specific tasks. Abnormal neural oscillations have been discovered in patients with schizophrenia. However, there is limited evidence available on abnormal spontaneous neural oscillations in clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR-P). The brain signals recorded by the magnetoencephalography (MEG) technique are not to be disrupted by the skull and scalp. METHODS: In this study, we applied the MEG technique to record the resting-state neural activities in CHR-P. Th

Decoding saccadic eye movements from brain signals using an endovascular neural interface.

Objective. An oculomotor brain-computer interface (BCI) records neural activity from brain regions involved in planning eye movements and translates this activity into control commands. While previous successful studies have relied on invasive implants in non-human primates or electrooculography artefacts in human electroencephalogram (EEG) data, this study aimed to demonstrate the feasibility of an oculomotor BCI using a minimally invasive endovascular StentrodeTMdevice implanted near the supplementary motor area of a patient with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).Approach.One participant pe

Modulation of saccades in humans by electrical stimulation of the posterior subthalamic area.

OBJECTIVE: Posterior subthalamic area (PSA) deep brain stimulation (DBS) targeting the zona incerta (ZI) is an emerging treatment for tremor syndromes, including Parkinson's disease (PD) and essential tremor (ET). Evidence from animal studies has indicated that the ZI may play a role in saccadic eye movements via pathways between the ZI and superior colliculus (incerto-collicular pathways). PSA DBS permitted testing this hypothesis in humans. METHODS: Sixteen patients (12 with PD and 4 with ET) underwent DBS using the MRI-directed implantable guide tube technique. [Do We Still Need Electrophysiology in Ophthalmology?].

Electrophysiological methods in clinical ophthalmology include the full-field electroretinogram (ERG) for assessment of outer and middle retinal layers, pattern ERG (PERG) for assessment of ganglion cell function, the electrooculogram (EOG) for assessment of retinal pigment epithelium function, as well as visual evoked potentials (VEP) for assessment of the visual pathway, including the optic nerve and visual cortex. Multifocal recording techniques for ERG and VEP are used for tests within selected areas of the visual field. Technical progress in ocular imaging, especially optical coherence to

Induced gamma-band brain responses to direct eye contact in the frontal and parietal cortices.

We used simultaneous recordings of the neuromagnetic (MEG) and electrooculogram (EOG) recordings on a pair of directly facing subjects, i.e., the sender and the observer of the eye gaze, to measure changes in the spontaneous brain activities while the observer perceives changes in eye gaze direction of the sender. The MEG signals were analyzed in the time-frequency domain to evaluate event-related changes in the spontaneous brain activities induced by the onset of eye movements. Significant increase in the gamma-band power was observed in the eye-contact condition compared to the averting cond

Distinct modulation of event-related potentials during motor preparation in patients with motor conversion disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Conversion paresis patients and healthy people feigning weakness both exhibit weak voluntary movement without detectable neuropathology. Uniquely, conversion patients lack a sense of conscious awareness of the origin of their impairment. We investigated whether conversion paresis patients show distinct electroencephalographic (EEG) markers associated with their unconscious movement deficits. METHODS: Six unilateral upper limb conversion paresis patients, 12 feigning participants asked to mimic weakness and 12 control participants performed a precued reaction time task, requiring mo

Evidence for cognitive vestibular integration impairment in idiopathic scoliosis patients.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is characterized by a three-dimensional deviation of the vertebral column and its etiopathogenesis is unknown. Various factors cause idiopathic scoliosis, and among these a prominent role has been attributed to the vestibular system. While the deficits in sensorimotor transformations have been documented in idiopathic scoliosis patients, little attention has been devoted to their capacity to integrate vestibular information for cognitive processing for space perception. Seated idiopathic scoliosis patients and control subjects experienced rotations o

Analyses of the characteristics of potential and cross-talk at each electrode in electro-oculogram.

We placed negative electrodes on the body and positive electrodes at the medial and lateral canthi, measured their potentials separately, evaluated their characteristics, and analyzed cross-talk. We recorded EOG in 6 normal subjects and found the following. The potential at the medial was lower than that at the lateral canthus in the bilateral eyes. The polarity of waves at the lateral was reverse to that at the medial canthus in the bilateral eyes. We recorded EOG in 6 patients with unilateral anophthalmia and found the following. On the anophthalmia side, the potential at the lateral was con

Eye muscle force development in thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy in different stages of disease.

PURPOSE: Ocular motility disturbances are common in patients with thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO). A quantitative evaluation of the isometric force of the eye muscles in TAO might be useful in the detection of early stages of this disease. METHODS: A total of 32 patients with TAO were divided into three groups according to whether they had mild active, pronounced, active, or longstanding, inactive disease. A group of six patients with Graves' disease without clinical signs of TAO and a group of 10 control subjects were also studied. The development of isometric force during saccadic e

Anterior asymetrical alpha activity predicts Iowa gambling performance: distinctly but reversed.

Animal research indicates that the prefrontal cortex (PFC) plays a crucial role in decision making. In concordance, deficits in decision making have been observed in human patients with damage to the PFC. Contemporary accounts of decision making suggest that emotion guides the process of decision making by ways of providing for reward-punishment contingencies. A task capable of assessing the influence of reward and punishment on decision making is the Iowa gambling task. In this task decisions become motivated by inherent punishment and reward schedules. Insensitivity for punishment together w

Kearns-Sayre syndrome -3 case reports and review of clinical feature.

Kearns-Sayre syndrome, first described by Kearns and Sayre in 1958, is a rare disorder consisting of ptosis, limited movement of both eyes and atypical retinal pigmentary change (salt-pepper like appearance). Most cases have shown an increase in the concentration of mitochondria and ragged-red fiber under Gomori-trichrome staining on muscle biopsy. Occasionally, it is combined with other neurologic and endocrinologic symptoms such as ataxia, dementia, diabetes, and hyperaldosteronism. We recently experienced three cases of male teenaged patients who expressed the clinical features of Kearns-Sa

EEG spectral analysis of the sleep-onset period in narcoleptics and normal sleepers.

The sleep-onset period of 10 drug-free patients with narcolepsy-cataplexy and 10 normals matched for age and gender was investigated using the multiple sleep latency test to elicit episodes of intentional sleep onset. Spectral analyses were calculated for delta, theta, alpha, sigma, and beta frequencies using 5-second epochs beginning at lights-out and continuing until the first 2 minutes of stage 2 or REM sleep were reached, or until 20 minutes had elapsed. The sleep-onset period was divided into quartiles, and mean root mean square (RMS) amplitude within each quartile was calculated. Mean de

[Marked polyglobulia in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea].

Two patients with obstructive sleep apnoea are presented. Both had marked hypoxaemic polycythaemia treated for many years with phlebotomies before a proper diagnosis was established. Diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnoea and introduction of CPAP treatment resulted in clinical improvement and regression of polycythaemia. In secondary polycythaemia differential diagnosis should include obstructive sleep apnoea.

Electrical stimulation of upper airway musculature.

Investigators have postulated that pharyngeal collapse during sleep in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) may be alleviated by stimulating the genioglossus. The effect of electrical stimulation (ES) of the genioglossus on pharyngeal patency was examined in an isolated feline upper airway preparation and in apneic humans during sleep. We found that stimulation of the genioglossus (n = 8) and of the hypoglossal nerve (n = 1) increased maximum airflow through the isolated feline upper airway in humans during sleep. Additional findings in the isolated feline upper airway suggest that such
