Stereotypic behavior of a female Asiatic elephant (Elephas maximus) in a zoo.

This study recorded daytime behavior of a female Asiatic elephant at the Municipal Zoo, Wroclaw, Poland, in both an indoor pen and an outdoor paddock as continuous scan sampling for 140 hr, over 35 days in 1 year. Stereotypic sequences involved bouts of highly repetitive stereotypic movements and much more variable interbout behavior. The study found both stereotypic movements, nodding and body (corpus) swaying, were asymmetric, accompanied by protraction of the right hind leg and to-and-fro swinging of the trunk. The elephant spent 52% of the daytime in stereotypic movements, 3.5 times the le

Infection with a novel gammaherpesvirus in northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris).

Twenty juvenile northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) that died between 1998 and 2004 had ulcers on the tongue, palatine mucosa, and/or tonsils. Histologic examination of the lesions revealed cytoplasmic swelling, nuclear pyknosis, and eosinophilic to amphophilic intranuclear inclusions bodies suggestive of herpesviral infection. Electron microscopic examination and polymerase chain reaction analysis confirmed the presence of a herpesvirus. Subsequent DNA sequencing identified this to be a new gammaherpesvirus that was similar to Porcine lymphotropic virus 2, Alcephaline herpesviru

The Lido as Venice's refuse tip: Dalmatian sheep and the 1819 elephant.

The Lido of Venice is an island twelve kilometers long and between a hundred and one thousand meters wide. The citizans of Venice and many turists can't imagine today, what Lido was some centuries ago Initially totally sandy, it was fertilized by means of a continuous supply of Venice's garbage (the "scoasse"). In addition to the "scoasse", damaged foodstuffs and the waste of the vegetable market were also sent to the Lido. Other fertilisers originated from the dung of the cattle and sheep arriving by ship from Dalmatia, which were landed on the Lido, where they could pasture before slaughter

Diagnosis and treatment of presumptive pyelonephritis in an Asian elephant (Elephas maximus).

A 37-yr-old female Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) presented with anorexia, restlessness, and dark-colored urine. Urinalyses showed hematuria, leukocyturia, isosthenuria, proteinuria, granular casts, and no calcium oxalate crystals. Bloodwork revealed azotemia. Urine culture revealed a pure growth of Streptococcus zooepidemicus resistant to sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim but susceptible to cephalosporins. A presumptive diagnosis of pyelonephritis was made based on bloodwork, urinalysis, and urine culture. The animal was treated with intravenous ceftiofur, and intravenous and per rectum fluids

Biliary adenocarcinoma in a stranded northern elephant seal (Mirounga angustirostris).

A stranded adult female northern elephant seal (Mirounga angustirostris) was admitted to a rehabilitation hospital grossly underweight and lethargic in April 2001. The animal was icteric, had severe bilirubinemia, and elevated serum gamma glutamyl transferase concentrations. Laparoscopy under anesthesia revealed multiple masses up to 3 cm diameter throughout the liver and spleen and the animal was euthanized. Abnormal gross postmortem findings included green serous fluid in the abdominal cavity and 0.5 to 3 cm diameter yellow nodules scattered throughout the liver, spleen, and lymph nodes. His

Total arch replacement with elephant trunk procedure for retrograde dissection.

BACKGROUND: The surgical management of type A dissection with the intimal tear in the descending aorta--retrograde dissection--has some challenging aspects because the standard approach through a median sternotomy for ascending aortic dissection is difficult in these cases in which the intimal tear is located in the descending aorta. METHODS: From January 1995 to December 2001, 12 (8.6%) consecutive patients aged 40 to 71 years underwent total arch replacement with an elephant trunk procedure through a median sternotomy for retrograde dissection of the ascending aorta (acute: 10, chronic: 2)

Treatment of aortic arch dissection using the elephant trunk technique.

The elephant trunk technique was developed to facilitate multiple-stage treatment of extensive aneurysm of the thoracic aorta. However, little information is available concerning its usefulness for aortic dissection. From April 1992 to July 1998, we used the elephant trunk technique for treatment of aortic arch dissection in 22 patients (including 19 men) with a mean age of 58.5 years (range 21 to 85 years). Twelve patients presented with type A dissection (acute in 3 and chronic in 9), 3 with type B acute dissection, and 7 with "non A/non B" dissections with retrograde extension to the aortic

Morphology of the deciduous tusk (tush) of the African elephant (Loxodonta africana).

The tusk of the African elephant is preceded by a deciduous tooth generally known as the tush. Tushes from nine elephant fetuses and six calves younger than 1 year were exposed by dissection and described morphologically. All tushes consisted of a crown, root and pulpal cavity, the formation of which is completed soon after birth. They reached a maximum length of 5 cm, appeared not to erupt through the skin and were pushed aside and resorbed during enlargement of the distally located primordium of the tusk. Dental enamel, which covered the crown, could easily be removed and consisted of rods w

'The Elephant Man' as 'self' and 'other': the psycho-social costs of a misdiagnosis.

'The Elephant Man's Disease' acquired enormous notoriety through the portrayals of the life of Joseph Merrick, 'The Elephant Man', on American stage, screen and television. These portrayals, inspired by Ashley Montagu's book, The Elephant Man (1971) parleyed the designation of Merrick's condition into a household phrase, a metaphor for the grimmest extreme of ugliness. This paper explores the impact of 'The Elephant Man' as the chief referent and role model for persons who believed they shared the condition of neurofibromatosis 1, a neurological genetic disorder, which was erroneously believed

The oesophagus and stomach of the African elephant: a histological, immunocytochemical and immunofluorescence study.

Histological, immunocytochemical and immunofluorescence methods were employed to study the oesophagus and stomach of the elephant. The histological findings were in line with the situation in monogastric species like swine and man. In the mucosa of the stomach, endocrine cells were immunoreactive to gastrin, somatostatin, chromogranin A and serotonin. Nerve cells immunoreactive to somatostatin, bombesin, VIP, PHI and CGRP were detected in the submucosal and myenteric plexus of the stomach. In the stomach, the absence of glucagon cells and the presence of endocrine cells immunoreactive to PYY,

The pineal gland in newborn southern elephant seals, Mirounga leonina.

In the newborn southern elephant seal the pineal gland is very large, and both pineal and plasma melatonin concentration is elevated. The pineal gland was investigated during the first 24 h, and up to 20 days of age, in elephant seal pups. A primary aim of this investigation was to determine whether there are obvious ultrastructural characteristics of pinealocytes that are exhibiting extraordinarily high levels of activity. Blood and pineal glands were collected from thirty seven pups of known age which were sampled at random from early September to early November (1985) at Macquarie Island. T

Megafaunal engineering in the tropical rainforest: African forest elephants (Loxodonta cyclotis) reduce avian species richness but elevate functional diversity.

African forest elephants (Loxodonta cyclotis) are critically endangered ecosystem engineers of African tropical forests. Despite their rapidly declining population trend, little is known of how forest elephants interact with other vertebrate assemblages. To explore this, we studied avian communities within a continuous tropical rainforest on the slopes of Mt. Cameroon. The area's topography allowed us to survey birds in elephant-grazed primary forest and in adjacent portions that elephants avoid, isolating the effect of megafaunal grazing within an otherwise intact system. We additionally surv…

Differentiating the estrous cycle phases using vaginal vestibule pH and cytology in Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) in human care.

Reproductive dysfunction in elephants is often confirmed through blood hormonal assays, as behavioral observations alone are insufficient. While fecal and saliva hormonal analyses offer welfare-friendly alternatives, significant resources are required, limiting practicality in field applications. To improve reproductive management and ensure animal welfare, this study aimed to investigate pH measurements and cytological analysis of the vaginal vestibule to differentiate estrous cycle phases in female elephants, both those with regular and irregular cycling. A total of 106 vaginal vestibule cyt…

Molecular analysis supports the morphological identification of the amphistome Pseudodiscus collinsi (Paramphistomoidea: Platyhelminthes) in wild elephants of Sri Lanka.

Post-mortem examinations of elephants in Sri Lanka's Yala National Park morphologically identified amphistome flukes as Pseudodiscus collinsi, a species previously found in Indian elephants. These Sri Lankan worms had 100% ITS-2 sequence identity with that of the Indian P. collinsi Wayanad specimen (GenBank: PQ046280). This species is currently placed in the paramphistomoid family Gastrodiscidae. We compared three markers, ITS-2, partial 28S rDNA (D1-D3 domain), and partial mitochondrial cox1 sequences to previously published data and constructed three maximum likelihood (ML) phylogenies. Acro…

Distribution and association of antimicrobial resistance and virulence characteristics in Enterococcus spp. isolates from captive Asian elephants in China.

Enterococcus spp., as an opportunistic pathogen, are widely distributed in the environment and the gastrointestinal tracts of both humans and animals. Captive Asian elephants, popular animals at tourist attractions, have frequent contact with humans. However, there is limited information on whether captive Asian elephants can serve as a reservoir of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The aim of this study was to characterize AMR, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), virulence-associated genes (VAGs), gelatinase activity, hemolysis activity, and biofilm formation of Enterococcus spp. isolated from …

The first report on internal transcribed spacer region-based characterization of microfilaria in Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) in Thailand.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Filarial infections can significantly impact the health of both humans and animals. In elephants, filariasis has been associated with cutaneous dermatitis and skin nodules. However, molecular evidence for such infections is limited in Thailand. This study aimed to identify the morphological and molecular characteristics of microfilaria in captive Asian elephants in Thailand. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Whole blood collected from the ear vein of 129 captive Asian elephants was hematologically analyzed, and the blood parasites were evaluated using three standard techniques: The m…

SERUM VITAMIN D AND SELECTED BIOMARKERS OF CALCIUM HOMEOSTASIS IN ASIAN ELEPHANTS (ELEPHAS MAXIMUS) MANAGED AT A LOW LATITUDE.

An understanding of species-specific vitamin D metabolism and its role in calcium homeostasis is essential for correct diet formulation and development of husbandry protocols for managed nondomestic species. This study documented serum vitamin D metabolites and other analytes involved in calcium homeostasis in Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) managed at a latitude similar to their wild natural habitat. Serum values for 33 elephants managed at a low latitude were measured in the peak of summer, revealing low vitamin D2 (25(OH)D2 2.3 ± 0.6 ng/ ml and 24,25(OH)2D2 2.17 ± 0.52 ng/ml) and nondetec…

Elephant gestural communication during agonistic interactions: repertoire, intentionality, and goals.

Goal-directed intentionality is the ability to communicate with the intention of eliciting reactions from recipients. Long considered uniquely human, today it has been reported in the signalling of several species, most notably in the large, flexible gestural repertoires of non-human apes. Semi-captive elephants have also shown goal-directed intentionality when gesturing to humans. However, whether wild elephants gesture intentionally to conspecifics has not been systematically explored. Elephants frequently engage in agonistic interactions, in which goal-directed intentional communication may…
