The Detroit Public Schools Health Corps: a student-led model for delivering sideline and preventive sports medicine in underserved communities.

BACKGROUND: Resource-limited school districts often lack athletic trainers and real-time medical support during sports events, placing student-athletes at risk for improper care. The Detroit Public School Health Corps (DPSHC), a medical student-led initiative, was developed to fill this need through supervised sideline coverage by trained medical students. This study evaluates the program's first full year of implementation. METHODS: The authors analyzed injury encounters during the 2024-2025 academic year across 280 athletic events at 16 Detroit public high schools. Thirty-one medical studen

From Wooden Mock-Ups to Hybrid Ecosystems: A Systems Architecture Approach to Next-Generation Helicopter emergency medical services/Search and Rescue Crew Training.

OBJECTIVE: Helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) and search and rescue operations represent the intersection of aviation complexity and clinical criticality. Despite technological advances in simulation, most training programs remain fragmented across aviation and medical domains, failing to integrate the human factors that determine mission success. This program report describes the longitudinal development of an integrated HEMS simulation training system, from early low-fidelity cabin prototypes to contemporary multi-sensory and hybrid simulation environments, and proposes a systems a

Voices from the frontline: counsellors' perspectives on TB/HIV collaborative activities in the Northwest Region, Cameroon.

BACKGROUND: The overlapping epidemiology of tuberculosis (TB) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections prompted the World Health Organisation in 2004 to recommend collaboration between national TB and HIV programmes. The goal of this collaboration is to decrease the burden of both infections in the population. This policy was subsequently adopted by the national TB and HIV programmes in Cameroon with TB and HIV nurses/counsellors acting as frontline implementers of the collaborative activities in the 10 regions of the country. METHODS: Qualitative research interviews were conducted w

Spectrum and outcome of neonatal emergencies seen in a free health-care program in South-Western Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal emergencies contribute significantly to under-five morbidity and mortality in developing countries, partly due to poverty and limited access to quality healthcare in rural communities. AIMS: The aim is to evaluate the spectrum, outcome, case fatality rates (CFRs), and prognostic factors of neonatal emergencies seen in the two free health-care facilities in Ondo State. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional descriptive study of neonatal emergencies. Data were collected on eligible consecutive infants using a self-designed questionnaire. Neonatal emergencies were classified b

IoT-Based Biomedical Monitoring System for Preventive Maternal Healthcare and Early Detection of Obstetric Complications.

Severe Maternal Morbidity (SMM) is defined as the condition in which a woman survives life-threatening complications during pregnancy, childbirth, or the postpartum period, representing a key indicator of the quality of obstetric care. In Colombia, SMM remains a critical challenge, with recent increases in incidence and risk factors associated with sociodemographic inequalities and limited access to healthcare services. In this context, emerging technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) offer opportunities to strengthen maternal health prevention and remote monitoring. This study propo

Eligible but missing out: a qualitative study of access to COVID-19 antivirals in Australia.

BACKGROUND: Oral antiviral medication is available free of charge to Australians with SARS-CoV-2 infection who meet specific eligibility criteria. Health services and systems are targeted to support vulnerable populations, but not all eligible people received antivirals prior to hospitalisation. To expand the evidence base of social and behavioural insights in infectious disease emergencies and inform future pandemic responses, we sought to understand why people at high risk of hospitalisation with COVID-19 did not access antivirals. METHODS: We conducted 29 semi-structured interviews with peo

Common Finger Injuries: Treatment Guidelines for Emergency and Primary Care Providers.

INTRODUCTION: Finger and hand injuries are among the most common musculoskeletal conditions presenting to emergency departments and primary care providers. Many rural and community hospitals may not have immediate access to an orthopedic surgeon on-site. Furthermore, military treatment facilities, both within the continental United States and in austere deployment environments, face similar challenges. Therefore, knowing how to treat basic finger and hand injuries is paramount for patient care. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Armed Forces Health Surveillance Branch operates the Defense Medical Sur

The role of EMS systems in public health emergencies.

INTRODUCTION: Until now, the public health response to the threat of an epidemic has involved coordination of efforts between federal agencies, local health departments, and individual hospitals, with no defined role for prehospital emergency medical services (EMS) providers. METHODS: Representatives from the local health department, hospital consortium, and prehospital EMS providers developed an interim plan for dealing with an epidemic alert. The plan allowed for the prehospital use of appropriate isolation procedures, prophylaxis of personnel, and predesignation of receiving hospitals for

Families with complex needs: an inside perspective from young people, their carers, and healthcare providers.

Complex health needs are demanding and often require additional medical, psychological and social support. All those involved (e.g., patients, carers, professionals) face a unique set of challenges and needs, especially in families where the patient is a child or a young person with a lifelong condition. The aim of the study was to explore carers' and young people's needs when living with long term conditions, as well as the views of the healthcare professionals supporting them. Semi-structured interviews with 30 participants (11 professionals, 10 parents, and 9 young people) were conducted. I

The clinical practice of emergency medicine in Mahajanga, Madagascar.

INTRODUCTION: Little is documented concerning the clinical practice of emergency care in low- and middle-income countries. The lack of structural models presents serious obstacles to the development of effective emergency care services. This study provides such a model by describing the clinical practice at the emergency centre of the Centre Hôpitalier Universitaire de Mahajanga in Madagascar. METHODS: This was a retrospective chart review of all adult patients presenting to the emergency centre from September to November 2012. Archived chart data were extracted into a computer database. Liver Transplantation for Hemoperitoneum Secondary to Huge Multiple Hemangiomatosis: A Case Report of a Tele-intensive Care Unit in Deceased-Donor Management.

BACKGROUND: Patients with growing and nonresectable liver hemangiomas should be followed up by a transplant center with extensive experience in complex liver disease. They could be treated on an emergency basis with orthotopic liver transplantation, with an expectation of good long-term results. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We describe the case of a 37-year-old woman with liver hemangiomatosis followed up for 8 years, who presented with bleeding requiring transfusions and developed hemodynamic instability. We listed her for emergency transplant before her sister's living donor work-up could be comp

Evaluation of the use of intraosseous access on adult patients presenting to the emergency department in urban South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Timely vascular access forms a necessary part of patient management in the Emergency Department (ED). Factors such as hypotension, intravenous drug use, obesity, dark skin, patients at extremes of age, and patients with multiple injuries may make peripheral intravenous cannulation difficult. The intraosseous route remains a suitable alternative for emergency circulatory access. The objectives of this study were to describe the knowledge, attitudes, and practice of doctors in the ED about the use of intraosseous access in critically ill adult patients. METHODS: A descriptive study

[Invisible support, life-saving cooperation].

In certain cases, emergency care begins even before emergency medical services arrive on the scene, as bystanders take immediate action. Dispatchers play a key role in supporting lay responders, yet their responsibility often remains unrecognized. The aim of this summary was to examine the cooperation between dispatchers and lay first aid providers from various perspectives. Advancements in technology are significantly improving prehospital care. The emergence of structured decision-support software, video-assisted resuscitation, and artificial intelligence-based systems can considerably enhan

Barriers and facilitators of linkage to HIV care among HIV-infected young Chinese men who have sex with men: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: The Four Free and One Care Policy (HIV/AIDS-related free services) has been in place in China since 2004. However, linkage to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) care is not yet achieved very well among people living with HIV. We conducted a qualitative study to explore individual and contextual factors that may influence a linkage to HIV care from the perspective of young HIV-infected men who have sex with men (MSM) in a highly centralized HIV care context of China. METHODS: Purposive sampling was used to recruit 21 HIV-infected MSM in Shandong Province, with in-depth interviews c
