Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) affects 38 % of adults globally and has been identified as a significant and increasing contributor to global health and economic burdens. Obesity is significantly associated with MASLD. Eating behaviours may represent an underexplored shared risk factor for these adverse physiological outcomes. Here, we tested a novel mediation model and hypothesised that emotional and uncontrolled eating would be positively associated with liver fibrosis (kilopascals; kPa) and steatosis (controlled attenuation parameter; CAP) via body mass inde

Despite decades of research, there is still a disquieting amount of unanswered questions concerning the genesis as well as the efficient therapy of schizophrenia. The classic approaches emphasizing genetic and family influences were followed by more comprehensive ones that focus on the interplay between the cognitive and the emotional social symptoms of the illness. The demand-access-matching model and, perhaps even more clearly, the cognitive appraisal model seek to integrate biological and early childhood experience factors and show their impact on cognitive as well as emotional functioning.

Accumulating clinical evidence shows that psychedelic therapy, by synergistically combining psychopharmacology and psychological support, offers a promising transdiagnostic treatment strategy for a range of disorders with restricted and/or maladaptive habitual patterns of emotion, cognition and behavior, notably, depression (MDD), treatment resistant depression (TRD) and addiction disorders, but perhaps also anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and eating disorders. Despite the emergent transdiagnostic evidence, the specific clinical dim

PURPOSE: Psychedelic therapy is showing promise for a broad range of mental health conditions, indicative of a transdiagnostic action. While the efficacy of symptom-focused treatments for eating disorders (EDs) is limited, improved mental health and psychological wellbeing are thought to contribute to greater treatment outcomes. This study provides the first quantitative exploration of the psychological effects of psychedelics in those reporting an ED diagnosis.
METHODS: Prospective, online data were collected from individuals planning to take a psychedelic drug. Twenty-eight participants rep

This paper reports on the Interrupted Career Group, a therapy group for individuals whose professional and personal lives have drastically changed due to psychiatric illness and whose attempts to resume a career or other meaningful activities have been unsuccessful. Thirty-two persons with interrupted careers were asked to specify and pursue a vocational, educational, or volunteer track that integrated previous skills and activities with their present life situation and psychiatric limitations. They were also encouraged to discuss feelings of envy, shame, inferiority, rage, and humiliation ass

Healthcare workers exposed to emergencies and chronic stressors are at high risk of developing mental health problems. This review synthesized existing studies of group psychological therapy to reduce distress symptoms in healthcare workers (i.e., as complex and heterogeneous emotional states, characterized by the presence of symptoms associated with post-traumatic stress disorder, burnout, anxiety, depression and moral injury). Searches were conducted using PRISMA guidelines and databases such as PubMed, PsycINFO, Medline and Web of Science, along with manual searches of reference lists of re

While a small body of work focuses directly on young people's experiences of psychotherapy following sexual abuse, to our knowledge, there are no existing reviews of this literature. This systematic review was conducted using Siddaway et al.'s guidelines. Inclusion criteria were: published between 2000 and 2022; used qualitative methodologies; and captured adolescents' perspectives. Eleven studies were identified, representing an aggregated sample size of 72 young people aged 12 to 18. Methodologies used included thematic analysis, content analysis, conversation analysis, and narrative analysi

Nature has long demonstrated the capacity to facilitate wellbeing. Interventions involving the natural environment such as surf therapy, are increasingly being used to facilitate aspects of wellbeing in clinical populations. However, explorations of how nature-based interventions such as surf therapy may be used to promote wellbeing in the context of neurorehabilitation are missing from the peer-reviewed literature. Here we characterize the experience of a five-week surfing intervention involving fifteen adults living with the psycho-social and cognitive sequelae of acquired brain injury. Insi

BACKGROUND: Trauma-focused psychotherapies are recommended first-line treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Emotion-to-Emotion Therapy (ETE) is a psychotherapy derived from traditional Korean medicine that regulates excessive emotional responses using theoretically opposing emotions. Virtual reality (VR) may support standardized and immersive delivery of the meditation component of ETE. This trial will evaluate the efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness of VR-based ETE for PTSD.
METHODS: This multicenter, randomized, waitlist-controlled, assessor-blinded trial will enroll 72

Psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy has demonstrated efficacy in treating individual mental health conditions such as addiction, anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. However, current research predominantly focuses on individual experiences, overlooking the relational and systemic factors that influence healing and long-term therapeutic outcomes. This conceptual article proposes a systemic approach to psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy and research, integrating relational principles to explore the impact of psychedelic experiences on interpersonal dynamics, attachment pattern

Sexual assault and abuse can result in severe physical and emotional trauma to the victim. Deploying targeted psychotherapeutic treatment that is individualized for the survivor is important to achieving optimal patient outcomes. There are several valid and evidence-based treatments available for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and interpersonal difficulties that can result from sexual abuse and assault. In this article, the authors discuss psychodynamic psychotherapy, trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT), and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy (EMDR) fo

BACKGROUND: Digital tools may support early phases of trauma therapy for adolescents, yet little is known about how an app-based stabilization phase functions in routine child and adolescent psychiatry clinics. To our knowledge, no previous study has qualitatively examined a compassion-integrated, app-based stabilization phase delivered before trauma processing within trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) for adolescents.
OBJECTIVE: This formative qualitative pretrial study explored the acceptability, feasibility, and contextual fit of an app-based stabilization phase within bl

OBJECTIVE: This study explores how smartphones are depicted in the illness narratives of patients with mental health issues, focusing on the roles smartphones play and their affordances within online depression communities.
METHODS: We analyzed discussions from an online depression group with over 60,000 members using Semantic Network Analysis (SNA) and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA).
RESULTS: The study identified three key roles of smartphones-as information brokers, communication tools, and emotional valves-which correspond to affordances of visibility, connectivity, and persistence. Th

A neglected class of sexual assault victims consists of women who were molested as children. In response to their unmet needs, therapy groups composed solely of women who were sexually abused in their childhood have been established. The goals of these groups are twofold: (1) the alleviation of sexual guilt and shame and (2) the clarification of emotional and behavioral consequences of molestation. Ten groups have been conducted, each containing four to six members, comprising an overall total of 50 women. In 97% of the cases, a prior relationship had existed between perpetrator and victim. Tr

Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFCT) is a widely used, evidence-based treatment with established effectiveness, and several underlying mechanisms have been examined. However, the assumptions of the full EFCT model have not yet been tested. The basic model proposes four interrelated layers within and between partners: (1) relationship satisfaction depends on (2) need fulfillment, which results from (3) support-giving, and is moderated by (4) attachment, emotional awareness/clarity, and conflict styles. We tested these associations using Structural Equation Modeling in AMOS with Actor-Partn

3,4-Methylenedioxymetamphetamine(MDMA)-assisted psychotherapy (MDMA-AP) is a proposed treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that may be approved for adults soon. PTSD is also common among trauma-exposed adolescents, and current treatments leave much room for improvement. We present a rationale for considering MDMA-AP for treating PTSD among adolescents. Evidence suggests that as an adjunct to therapy, MDMA may reduce avoidance and enable trauma processing, strengthen therapeutic alliance, enhance extinction learning and trauma-related reappraisal, and hold potential beyond PTSD sy

This paper describes a new cognitive model of bulimia nervosa. It provides a detailed account of the development of the disorder and explains, in detail and encompassing cognition, behaviour, emotion, and physiology, how binge eating is maintained. Relevant maintaining factors include positive beliefs about eating, negative beliefs about weight and shape, permissive thoughts, and thoughts of no control. Relevant developmental factors include negative early experiences, negative self-beliefs, schema compensation processes, and different types of underlying assumption. Recent empirical findings
