A multi-level framework for the functions of emotions and their expressions.

PURPOSE: The purpose of This study is exploring the intraoperative and perioperative differences between patients undergoing conversion surgery and those undergoing direct surgery, so as to improve preoperative preparation. METHODS: The retrospective study was approved by an ethics review committee. A total of 232 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma who underwent surgical resection at the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University from September 2022 to December 2023 were included, comprising 210 operating patients and 53 conversion patients. More than just smiling: how positive emotions are expressed on the face.

To advance the science of positive emotional expressions, we test how 22 positive emotions are spontaneously displayed on the face, using the participant-negotiated episodic recall method. Respondents (n = 163) narrated emotional events from their lives, and we extracted facial behaviours that reflected peak expressivity (35 410 facial actions). Network models were applied to probe whether specific positive emotions would be conditionally associated with particular facial behaviours. Our results point to three sets of positive emotions: five that do not seem to have specific facial actions rel…

Bridging the Political Divide: Meta-Humanization and Moral Emotions Shape Partisan Reconciliation.

In an era of deepening political polarization, understanding how partisans believe they are perceived by ideological opponents is critical for explaining both hostility and conciliation. Across five studies (N = 1,541) conducted in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada, we examine how meta-humanization, perceiving that one's political ingroup is seen as fully human by the outgroup, shapes moral emotional responses and downstream intergroup attitudes. Specifically, we test anger, disgust, and empathy as parallel mediators linking meta-humanization to affective polarization, negotiat

Fearing Meningitis: Disease, Emotions and the Spotted Fever Epidemics of 1904-1907.

The meningitis (or spotted fever) outbreaks (c.1904-1907) caused worldwide alarm but remain largely forgotten. This article uses these outbr … t as meningitis became more manageable, emotional responses to its outbreaks altered significantly. Emotions were constructed and experienced in the context of a new medical modernity optimistic about public health and clinical interventions. Exploring the physical and emotional in tandem takes us to the heart of societal and personal experience of disease …

When emotions persist: Emotional inertia predicts adolescent depression amid COVID-19 stress.

Emotional inertia-the extent to which emotional states persist over time-has been identified as a risk factor for depression. However, longi … trolling for baseline (Wave 1) depressive symptoms. These findings suggest that persistent negative emotions may amplify vulnerability, while stable positive emotions confer resilience in the face of stress. Emotional inertia may thus serve as a key marker of stress reactivity and an early intervention target for youth mental health.

The causal relationship between emotions and osteoarthritis: A bidirectional Mendelian randomization study.

Previous study has observed the clinical relationship between affective disorders such as depression and anxiety and osteoarthritis (OA), however the gene causal effect was still unclear. The objective of this study was to evaluate the genetic causal effect of emotions on OA using bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR), which is a novel methodology elucidating the causal relationship between diseases and screening for the potential driver genes. A bidirectional MR study was conducted to assess the causal effect of emotion on OA. The instrumental variables were selected from publicly availa…

Experiences with family relationships following eating disorders: a roller coaster of emotions.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (EDs) are life-threatening illnesses that affect both patients and their families. When a member of the family … ured the feeling of the family living with all the highs and lows of EDs; its subthemes were strong emotions and ups-and-downs in life. Second, the metaphor 'being in the same boat' articulated the feeling of solidarity in the family while going through the illness period together; its subthemes were stronger attachments and open communication. CONCLUSION …

Non-fear emotions in changes in posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms during treatment.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is not only associated with fear but also with other emotions. The present study aimed to examine if changes in shame, guilt, anger, and disgust predicted changes in PTSD symptoms during treatment, while also testing if PTSD symptoms, in turn, predicted changes in these emotions. METHODS: Participants (N = 155) with childhood-related PTSD received a maximum of 12 sessions of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing or imagery rescripting. The data was analyzed using Granger causality models across 12 treatment sessions and 6…

Hand-blink reflex modulation: The role of primary emotions and attachment dimensions.

The hand-blink reflex (HBR) is a subcortical response elicited by the electrical stimulation of the median nerve. HBR magnitude is enhanced when the stimulated hand is close to the face and is modulated by high-level structures according to the perceived threat magnitude. Psychological factors may contribute to threat evaluation and possibly to HBR amplitude modulation. In this study, we assessed distinctively emotional and relational aspects of personality and evaluated their associations with the HBR response, or lack thereof, in healthy subjects. Seventy-one volunteers filled the Experience

Emotions in motion: affective valence can influence compatibility effects with graspable objects.

Previous studies showed that affective valence (positive, negative) influences Stimulus-Response Compatibility (SRC) effects elicited by both relevant and irrelevant spatial dimensions. We tested whether valence influences SRC effects when the irrelevant spatial dimension rather than being conveyed by the entire stimulus location is conveyed by the location of the stimulus' graspable part, i.e., the Handle-Response (H-R) compatibility effect. Participants saw objects with either a flower, a spider or nothing on their handle and categorized them as kitchen utensils or garage tools through butto

Musical Emotions Recognition Using Entropy Features and Channel Optimization Based on EEG.

The dynamic of music is an important factor to arouse emotional experience, but current research mainly uses short-term artificial stimulus materials, which cannot effectively awaken complex emotions and reflect their dynamic brain response. In this paper, we used three long-term stimulus materials with many dynamic emotions inside: the "Waltz No. 2" containing pleasure and excitement, the "No. 14 Couplets" containing excitement, briskness, and nervousness, and the first movement of "Symphony No. 5 in C minor" containing passion, relaxation, cheerfulness, and nervousness. Approximate entropy (…

Understanding Children's Emotions: Differences in Mothers With a History of Childhood Maltreatment.

Experiencing maltreatment in childhood can have a lasting impact on how individuals identify and understand emotions in others. Research in this area has not examined parents' understanding of children's emotions, although emotion processing deficits may be one mechanism linking childhood maltreatment to subsequent parenting problems. In a matched case-control design, we test whether mothers with (n = 50) and without (n = 96) childhood maltreatment differ in their understanding of children's emotions on self-report measures and computer-based tasks. Compared to the control group, mothers who e…

Variability of Movement Disorders: The Influence of Sensation, Action, Cognition, and Emotions.

Patients with movement disorders experience fluctuations unrelated to disease progression or treatment. Extrinsic factors that contribute to the variable expression of movement disorders are environment related. They influence the expression of movement disorders through sensory-motor interactions and include somatosensory, visual, and auditory stimuli. Examples of somatosensory effects are stimulus sensitivity of myoclonus on touch and sensory amelioration in dystonia but also some less-appreciated effects on parkinsonian tremor and gait. Changes in visual input may affect practically all typ

Healthcare professionals in the 'tainted blood' era in Canada: Their forgotten emotions.

INTRODUCTION: During the 1970s and early 1980s, Canada's comprehensive care haemophilic programs were established. Newer therapies led to a rapid increase in quality of life and expected life span for persons with haemophilia (PWH). The outlook was bright. However, beginning in 1982, the appearance of HIV/AIDS transmitted by treatment products led to the 'tainted blood' era with its devastating impact on PWH, recently highlighted in the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation mini-series 'Unspeakable'. What has received less notice is how the healthcare professionals (HCP) managing these patients th
