Within the short span of half a century, the treatment of variceal bleeding has become highly differentiated, with multiple treatment options. Pharmacological therapy with beta-blockers is well established for preventing the first variceal bleeding. The utility of adding a vasodilator to beta-blockers needs to be studied further. Octreotide is widely used as an adjuvant to standard endoscopic treatment to prevent variceal rebleeding, and the utility of this approach has been validated in several randomized controlled trials. Band ligation is well established, and its popularity has increased w

BACKGROUND: Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) is a well-established therapeutic option for the management of variceal hemorrhage in patients with cirrhosis. The simultaneous migration of the coil and n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate (NBCA) is an extremely rare but significant complication after TIPS. Because of its rare presentation, there are currently no definitive recommendations for the management of this condition.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 46-year-old man with hepatitis B cirrhosis underwent TIPS placement for uncontrolled gastroesophageal varix (GEV) bleeding secondary to portal h

BACKGROUND: Middle meningeal artery (MMA) embolization has been recognized as a promising treatment for patients with subdural hematoma (SDH).
OBJECTIVE: To present the technical feasibility and efficacy of n-butyl cyanoacrylate (n-BCA) embolization in the largest consecutive cohort to date.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed our consecutive cases of recurrent SDH treated with MMA embolization using diluted n-BCA with the "sugar rush" technique. In brief, a 2.1-Fr microcatheter was used to selectively catheterize the frontal and posterior branches of the MMA. 5% dextrose in water (D5W) was

Diploic arteriovenous fistulas are rare arteriovenous shunts involving the skull, which often drain antegradely into the internal or external jugular veins. Diploic arteriovenous fistulas with marked cortical venous reflux are extremely rare. Here, we present the case of a patient with diploic arteriovenous fistulas with marked cortical venous reflux and a literature review. A 73-year-old woman presented with headache. Magnetic resonance angiography revealed abnormal signal intensity in the diploic layer of the left frontal bone. Digital subtraction angiography demonstrated a diploic arteriove

Pseudoaneurysms are vascular spaces vulnerable to pressure, and expansion or rupture of these spaces may occur during embolization. Here, we describe the case of a transcatheter embolization of a spontaneous aortic pseudoaneurysm, which showed gradual expansion during n-butyl cyanoacrylate embolization. This pseudoaneurysm was successfully embolized with an adjuvant coil.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) using N-butyl cyanoacrylate (NBCA) for the treatment of active postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) and compare the efficacy of NBCA with gelatin sponge particles.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From January 2004 to September 2013, 26 patients with PPH underwent TAE using NBCA as the primary embolic material. All patients were actively bleeding, and 12 (46.2%) had coagulopathy. TAE was performed using 1:2-1:4 mixtures of NBCA and ethiodized oil with or without use of a coil or gelatin sponge. To compare the efficacy

BACKGROUND: Variceal bleeding is an acute medical emergency with high mortality. Although less common than oesophageal variceal haemorrhage, gastric variceal bleeding is more severe and more difficult to control. The optimal therapy for gastric variceal bleeding remains unclear although endoscopic injection of N-Butyl-2-Cyanoacrylate (Histoacryl) glue is often used. However, its long-term efficacy is poorly described. We studied the immediate and long-term effects of Histoacryl glue injection as treatment for bleeding gastric varices in a large UK hospital.
METHOD: Endoscopy records and case

A novel use of multidetector computed tomographic intravenous (MDCT IV) portography in the evaluation of gastric varices treated with tissue adhesive is described. A 55-year-old man presented with upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage as a result of bleeding gastric varices. The patient was stabilized and the gastric varices were treated with n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate (two injections, total 7.5 mL). MDCT IV portography performed after injection revealed thrombosis of all but one of the submucosally based gastric varices. The endoscopist who performed repeat endoscopy three weeks later was then able

N-Butyl-2-cyanoacrylate (NB2C) is a synthetic tissue adhesive, and it has been used in many surgical procedures. This study was aimed at evaluating its efficacy in cleft palate repairs. Fifteen patients with soft palate and hard palate clefts had clefts repaired with the use of this synthetic adhesive. The ages at repair ranged from 11 months to 17 years, with an average of 2.4 years. Follow-up time ranged from 14 months to 24 months. No complications were found. The advantages of using NB2C were shorter operative time, more pushback gained, better hemostasis, early and well-tolerated feeding,

Previously it was shown that poly(butyl cyanoacrylate) (PBCA) nanoparticles coated with polysorbate 80 are able to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) after i.v. administration. The objective of the present study was to investigate the influence of polysorbate 80 and doxorubicin-loading on the body distribution in rats. The biodistribution profile and brain concentration of (14)C-radiolabeled PBCA nanoparticles, polysorbate 80 coated (14)C-PBCA nanoparticles, and doxorubicin-loaded (14)C-PBCA nanoparticles were determined by radioactivity counting after i.v. administration in rats. The (14)C-P

We present the case of a 60-year-old man with persistent epistaxis for 20 days that had started 2 weeks after removal of a nasogastric tube placed for an abdominal operation. There was no pathologic finding at selective facial and internal maxillary artery injections. An injury to the ethmoidal branches of the ophthalmic arteries or other arterial origins of bleeding was suspected. The internal carotid artery angiography revealed a pseudoaneurysm of an anterior ethmoidal branch of the left ophthalmic artery. The pseudoaneurysm was occluded with NBCA-histoacryl (25%) injection.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate possible pain sensation differences in patients after retrograde varicocele embolization either with n-butyl-(2)-cyanoacrylate (NBCA) or with n-butyl-(2)-cyanoacrylate + methacryloxysulfolane (NBCA-MS). Transcatheter varicocele embolization was performed in 64 consecutive patients (62 left, two bilateral). Embolization was done with NBCA (n=32) or NBCA-MS (n=32). Immediately after the procedure, patients were asked to evaluate pain during embolization using a visual analog scale (VAS). Statistical analysis was done with Student's t test. Mean pain scor

Gastric variceal bleeding is a catastrophic event. Both cyanoacrylate injection and banding ligation have been proven to be effective in the management of bleeding gastric varices. This study was performed to compare the efficacy and complications of both the modalities. Cirrhotic patients with a history of gastric variceal bleeding were randomized to 2 groups. The group receiving endoscopic obturation (group A) comprised 31 patients and the group receiving band ligation (group B) comprised 29 patients. Butyl cyanoacrylate and pneumatic-driven ligator were applied, respectively. Treatment was

Technical difficulties in creating gastrointestinal anastomosis in infants and young children, because of the small lumen, are well known and may be complicated by a narrow passage, anastomotic obstruction, gastric stasis, recurrent vomiting, and failure to gain weight. The search for alternative easier technique was the basis for this study. The primary aim was to evaluate the safety of anastomosis between the stomach and a loop of the jejunum performed by using the tissue adhesive Histoacryl glue in comparison with the same anastomosis performed conventionally with absorbable sutures. We com
