Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus infection responsible for significant morbidity and mortality across Asia. Indigenous populations and those who undertake short- and long-term travel to endemic regions are at risk of infection and development of neuroinvasive disease. Effective mouse brain-derived vaccines have been available in select countries, including the United States, for decades. Limited access in Asia and safety concerns with regard to mouse brain products prompted the Chinese to develop a live, attenuated virus vaccine (SA14-14-2; Chengdu Institute of Biologi

The following aspects are dealt with in this article: 1) current geographical distribution of Japanese encephalitis; 2) clinical patterns of Japanese encephalitis; 3) vertebrate hosts of Japanese encephalitis virus; 4) vectors of JE virus; 5) epidemiological locations (endemic area, endemoepidemic area, epidemic area); 6) unknown epidemiological aspects; 7) JE virus serotypes; 8) evolution of the disease and recent epidemiological changes; 9) phylogenetic origin of the JE virus; 10) ecological changes in the past, factors in the emergence of the disease; and 11) the future: Can we predict how

Temporal lobe involvement on neuroimaging is extremely rare in Japanese encephalitis (JE) and isolated temporal lobe involvement on neuroimaging has rarely been described in the literature. With isolated temporal lobe involvement, distinguishing JE from the treatable Herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE) can be difficult. Both JE and HSE should be considered in patients who present clinically with acute encephalitis and have radiological evidence of temporal lobe involvement, especially in JE endemic areas.

Japanese encephalitis (JE) is the most common form of viral encephalitis that appears in the form of frequent epidemics of brain fever throughout Southeast Asia, China and India. The disease is caused by a Flavivirus named Japanese encephalitis virus that is spread to humans by mosquitoes. An internationally approved mouse brain-derived inactivated vaccine has been available that is relatively expensive, gives immunity of uncertain duration and is not completely safe. Cell culture-derived inactivated and attenuated JE vaccines are in use in China, but these are not produced as per the norms ac

Cerebrospinal fluid specimens from 57 patients diagnosed with meningitis were tested for Japanese encephalitis virus. Total RNA was extracted from the specimens and amplified. Two products had highest homology with Nakayama strain and 2 with Ishikawa strain. Results suggest that Japanese encephalitis virus causes some aseptic meningitis in Japan.

We report a three-year-old Korean boy who presented with itching symmetrical erythematous macules and papules on his face, trunk, and extremities for 1 week. Lymphadenopathies were detected on physical examination. He was vaccinated against Japanese B Encephalitis (JE) 1 day before developing skin rashes. The patient s serum JE antibody titer by hemagglutinin inhibition (HI) test was 1:40. Under the diagnosis of Gianotti-Crosti syndrome following JE vaccination, he was conservatively treated with an antihistamine agent, and his symptoms were all cleared 2 weeks after treatment.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the circumstances of two cases of Japanese encephalitis (JE) in north Queensland in 1998, including one acquired on the Australian mainland.
DESIGN: Serological surveillance of sentinel pigs for JE virus activity; serological surveys of humans and pigs and viral cultures of mosquito collections.
SETTING: Islands in the Torres Strait and communities in the Northern Peninsula Area (NPA) and near the mouth of the Mitchell River in Cape York, Queensland, in the 1998 wet season (December 1997-May 1998).
RESULTS: Sentinel pigs in the Torres Strait began to seroconvert to JE

Japanese encephalitis (JE) is associated with varying degrees of coma and brainstem involvement is frequent which can be evaluated and monitored by brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP). The present study has been undertaken to evaluate the BAEP changes and their role in predicting the outcome. Twelve adult patients with JE were subjected to CT scan, MRI and BAEP studies after detailed neurological evaluation. The severity of coma was assessed by Glasgow coma scale and outcome was defined at the end of 3 months into good and poor recovery on the basis of Barthel Index score (BI). The mean

Japanese encephalitis (JE) vaccine has been used in childhood immunization programmes in Asia for many years. Also travellers from other parts of the world have been vaccinated before travelling in Asian countries. Recommendations for the use of JE vaccine are still debated because severe cases of adverse reactions have been reported. In Denmark an inactivated JE vaccine derived from infected mouse brain has been used and 350000 doses have been distributed from the Statens Serum Institut since 1983. In the period 1983-1995, 101 adverse reactions after JE vaccination have been registered includ

In this study, viruria following Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) infection in mice has been shown to appear earlier in pregnant than in normal mice with proteinuria and haematuria. This was related to the production of splenic macrophage derived neutrophil chemotactic factor (MDF) following JEV infection. Intravenous inoculation of MDF in mice resulted in leakage of cells, proteins and erythrocytes in the urine as a result of altered capillary permeability. The isolation of virus from kidney did not correlate with the shedding of virus in the urine. The histological examination of sections o

Ten stable temperature-sensitive mutants of Japanese encephalitis virus were isolated after mutagenesis by growth of cloned wild-type virus in the presence of the nucleic acid precursor analogs 5-fluorouracil and 5-azacytidine. Mutants were selected which grew at least 100-fold better at 33 degrees C than at 41 degrees C. The 5-fluorouracil was found to be more effective at inducing temperature-sensitive mutations than was 5-azacytidine. Analysis of the virus-specific RNA and proteins synthesized by each mutant at the nonpermissive temperature was used to determine biochemical phenotypes. The

Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a global public health issue that has spread widely to more than 20 countries in Asia and has extended its geographic range to the south Pacific region including Australia. JE has become the most important cause of viral encephalitis in the world. Japanese encephalitis viruses (JEV) are divided into five genotypes, based on the nucleotide sequence of the envelope (E) gene. The Muar strain, isolated from patient in Malaya in 1952, is the sole example of genotype V JEV. Here, the XZ0934 strain of JEV was isolated from Culex tritaeniorhynchus, collected in China. The
