All of five strains of Entamoeba histolytica, isolated from symptomatic cases of amoebiasis, could be adapted to axenic growth on the TP-S-1 medium of Diamond (1968). Four axenic strains were started from amoeba-Crithidia cultures; one could be axenized directly after isolation from a case of cutaneous amoebiasis. In an outbreak of gastroenteritis affecting 730 students, Shigella sonnei and Entamoeba histolytica were isolated from the stool specimens of patients. Environmental investigations revealed the source of infection to be contamination of underground well water by sewage from a toilet. The outbreak ended with the closure of the well water supply. To avoid such problems, institutions and other groups that maintain their own wells, including schools and summer camps, need to be vigilant about maintenance and check for potential contamination.

Liver abscesses are the most common manifestation of extraintestinal infection by Entamoeba histolytica. Involvement of other sites, including the peritoneum, pericardium, brain, or genitourinary tract, is unusual. We describe a case of inguinal necrotizing lymphadenitis caused by E histolytica. Our patient responded well to surgical drainage, metronidazole, and paramomycin therapy. A literature review of genitourinary and other uncommon sites of E histolytica infection is included.
