Psychiatric dimensions in mothers of children with primary nocturnal enuresis: A controlled study.

INTRODUCTION: The etiology of primary nocturnal enuresis (PNE) is not fully understood, but multifactorial factors have been associated with PNE. Parental factors, including attitudes to PNE, disciplinary behaviors, and psychiatric comorbidities in parents have been related to etiology of PNE, outcomes and the quality of life in children with enuresis. OBJECTIVE: We examined the psychopathology in mothers of children diagnosed with monosymptomatic PNE(MoPNE) compared with mothers of non-enuretic children (MoNEC) in terms of personality characteristics, early traumatic experiences, and psychia

Is there a correlation between intravaginal ejaculatory latency time and enuresis? An exploratory study.

INTRODUCTION: Premature ejaculation (PE) is the most common male sexual dysfunction. Monosymptomatic enuresis (ME) is nocturnal bed wetting, without any daytime symptoms. Recent clinical studies report an association between lifelong PE and ME. The purpose of this study was to compare the intravaginal ejaculatory time (IELT) between lifelong PE in men with and without ME. The goal was to determine if there is an association between the severity of ME and of IELT. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 137 men with lifelong PE were included in this study. Subjects were asked if they had childhood ME

Sleep bruxism associated with nocturnal enuresis in a 6-year-old child.

BACKGROUND: Bruxism is the involuntary grinding of teeth that occurs during sleep or wake time. The prevalence of bruxism in children and adolescents is high when compared to the adult population. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: This article presents a case report of sleep bruxism in a 6-year-old child. The interesting finding here was its association with nocturnal enuresis (NE)/bedwetting. CONCLUSION/CLINICAL RELEVANCE: NE could be a predisposing factor for sleep bruxism in children, as it causes emotional stress and has a negative impact on a child's self esteem. Psychological support and techniqu

Evaluation of nocturnal bladder capacity and nocturnal urine volume in nocturnal enuresis.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the diagnostic accuracies of maximum voided volume (MVV) and first morning urine osmolality and compare these with accuracies of nocturnal bladder capacity (NBC) and nocturnal urine volume, respectively, in children with nocturnal enuresis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 70 children with nocturnal enuresis were assessed (mean age 7.1 ± 2.2 years). Baseline parameters were obtained by measuring MVV using a voiding diary, first morning urine osmolality on a wetting day, diaper weight by checking twice per night and first morning urine volume. RESULTS: The proportio

The relation of enuresis and irritable bowel syndrome with premature ejaculation: a preliminary report.

INTRODUCTION: In this retrospective study, we reviewed the outpatient data of patients with premature ejaculation to investigate the association of that disorder with irritable bowel syndrome and a positive history of enuresis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients with premature ejaculation who had presented to the author's office from March 2002 to June 2003 were selected. Their medical records were reviewed, and data including symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, history of enuresis, and psychologic disorders were collected. The results of our analysis were compared with the worldwide repor

Diuretic treatment of nocturnal enuresis: preliminary results of an open pilot study.

PURPOSE: Since antidiuretic treatment with desmopressin in the evening has proven effective against enuresis, it would not be surprising if diuretic treatment in the afternoon would have similar effects. We are currently testing this in an open pilot investigation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 33 children including 12 girls with a mean age +/-SD of 7.6 +/- 2.3 years with monosymptomatic enuresis were recruited from an outpatient primary care setting. Wet and dry nights were recorded for 2 weeks without medication, 2 weeks with 0.4 mg desmopressin orally at night and 2 weeks with 1 mg/kg

Retrovesical echinococcal cyst causing renal failure and nocturnal enuresis in a child.

Although retrovesical hydatid cysts are observed in adulthood albeit very rarely, to our knowledge there is no case reported in childhood. In the current case, a huge retrovesical hydatid cyst caused obstructive uropathy, polydipsia, and secondary nocturnal enuresis in a child. Because the retrovesical hydatid cyst was firmly adherent to the neighboring structures, partial cystectomy could be performed. Perioperative and postoperative complications did not occur, and the symptoms relieved in the early postoperative period.

Fluid deprivation in enuresis--effect on urine output and plasma arginine vasopressin.

Desmopressin responders tend to have a large volume of urine production at night, in contrast to desmopressin refractory patients who often produce normal volumes of urine. Controls and adolescent/adult primary monosymptomatic nocturnal enuretics were included in a study measuring urine volume and plasma vasopressin levels before and during a 24-hour water deprivation test. The results indicate a significantly higher urine production in desmopressin responders when compared with controls and non-responders. Before fluid deprivation, only the nocturnal polyuric patients showed a urine osmolalit

Long-term home studies of water balance in patients with nocturnal enuresis.

A 2-week, home-based study was conducted on 75 children with nocturnal enuresis to monitor the frequency of enuretic episodes and the volume of nocturnal urine production. The objectives of the study were to correlate nocturnal urine production to the occurrence of nocturnal enuresis and response to desmopressin (Minirin, DDAVP) treatment. Furthermore, patient compliance was evaluated. Enuresis episodes and nocturnal urine production was recorded every night during two base-line weeks without treatment and during 2 weeks with 20-40 micrograms desmopressin at bedtime. During both periods fluid

Modern management of pediatric nocturnal enuresis: Evidence-based treatment and practical guidance.

Nocturnal enuresis (NE) is a common and multifactorial pediatric condition characterized by abnormalities in bladder storage, renal water regulation, and central arousal mechanisms. According to the International Children's Continence Society, NE is defined as intermittent urinary incontinence that occurs during sleep in children aged 5 years or older, in the absence of congenital or acquired neurologic or urologic disease. Although often self-limiting, NE imposes a substantial psychosocial burden, causing embarrassment, low self-esteem, sleep disruption, and family stress. Advances in neuroph
