Proposal for defining the severity of environmental hypoxia.

Every day, millions of people are exposed to environmental hypoxia, primarily due to living at or travelling to high altitudes for reasons such as work, tourism, business, or sports, e.g., mountaineering. Furthermore, hypoxic exposure at low altitudes (e.g., in hypoxia rooms or tents) is increasingly being used to pre-acclimatize individuals to high altitudes for activities such as athletic training, trekking and high-altitude climbing, as well as for preventive and therapeutic purposes. Especially for these applications a clear definition of environmental hypoxia severity is lacking, impeding

The microbiota at the interface of environmental toxicants and the brain.

Throughout life, humans are exposed to a diverse array of xenobiotics originating from diet, pharmaceuticals, and environmental contaminants. Positioned at the interface between the host and the external environment, the gut microbiota is uniquely situated to both sense and modify the effects of these exposures prior to systemic circulation and delivery to their host targets. Growing evidence indicates that the microbiota play critical roles in shaping xenobiotic fate through both direct metabolic transformation and modulation of host detoxification pathways, barrier integrity, and immune sign

Environmental and Occupational Risk Factors for Retinoblastoma.

INTRODUCTION: The Wisconsin Department of Health Services received notice of an unusual number of cases of retinoblastoma in a small geographic area. Retinoblastoma is a rare pediatric eye cancer that strikes children aged <5 years. The reporters of these cases were concerned that they may be part of a cancer cluster. Cancer clusters are unusual numbers of cases in a defined geographic area over a defined period of time. They are believed to be caused by shared environmental or occupational risk factors. It is not known to what extent these risk factors play a role in retinoblastoma incidence.

Environmental chemicals and the tumor immune microenvironment.

Impact of representative environmental chemicals on tumor immune microenvironment (TIME). Representative environmental chemicals are ubiquitously distributed across air, soil, aquatic systems, and biota. These toxicants enter the human body via multiple exposure routes, including inhalation, dietary intake, and dermal absorption, subsequently accumulating in vital organs (such as the liver, lungs, kidneys, and intestines) as well as within tumor tissues. By disrupting physiological homeostasis, they impair the functionality of critical biological systems, including the metabolic, nervous, circ

Environmental exposures and pediatric kidney health.

Environmental exposures are increasingly associated with kidney and cardiometabolic disease in children. This review summarizes current understanding of the potentially hazardous effects of air pollution, chemical toxicants, and heavy metal contamination on pediatric kidney health and cardiometabolic risk factors for chronic kidney disease (CKD), as well as the potentially protective effect of green space. We highlight the critical windows of childhood development, during which the kidneys may have varying susceptibility to environmental exposures. We also discuss challenges and possible solut

Screening environmental indicators for viral monitoring.

AIMS: Aquatic ecosystems are critical screening points for human viruses as the discharge of viral pathogens in treated sewage is a reality. Thus, the present study aims to select promising aquatic matrices for viral monitoring. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 41 samples comprising secondary outlet effluents, intertidal sediments, digestive gland of riverine and estuarine bivalve molluscs with different feeding behaviours, gut content of marine fish, and faecal droppings of marine birds were considered to screen genomes of the ubiquitous human polyomavirus JC (JC virus) and norovirus genogrou

Environmental and Genetic Perturbations of the Sperm Epigenome.

The sperm cell is recognized nowadays as a key epigenetic vector, transmitting not only the paternal genome but also a complex epigenetic content-including DNA methylation, chromatin code and structure, and non-coding RNAs-to the zygote. This epigenome is highly sensitive to environmental factors, with paternal exposures such as dietary intake, lifestyle choices, stress, chemical hazards, pollution, or reprotoxic treatments (among others) influencing its programming. Genetic factors also modulate the sperm epigenetic cargo, supporting that a combination of complex multifactorial cues will defi

The rise of polyploids during environmental upheaval.

Polyploidy, or whole-genome duplication (WGD), serves as both a significant evolutionary force and a potential evolutionary dead end, particularly among angiosperms. Despite the prevalence of polyploid organisms, instances of ancient polyploidy are surprisingly rare, presenting a paradox that remains poorly understood. In this study, we constructed a comprehensive genomic dataset of 470 angiosperm species and dated 132 ancient WGD events that are non-randomly distributed, revealing a clustering around pivotal periods of environmental upheaval and extinction. Notably, our findings highlight a s

Preparing and characterizing environmentally aged microplastics.

Microplastics (MPs) are persistent and widely distributed pollutants that have become an emerging environmental problem. When present in the environment, they are increasingly being incorporated into the carbon cycle and thus participate in the Earth's biochemical cycle alongside other pollutants. However, upon entering the environment (as primary or secondary MPs), various environmental factors collectively influence the physical and chemical characteristics of MPs, leading to changes in surface morphology, particle size and microstructure. These alterations can change their physical behavior

Update on environmental determinants of allergic diseases.

This review article summarizes key advances from October 2022 to December 2025 on the link between environmental exposures and allergic diseases, with an emphasis on early-life exposures and mechanistic insights relevant to disease prevention and therapy. Allergic diseases have genetic and environmental origins. As to the latter, predisposition to allergy is thought to arise as a result of increased exposure to harmful environmental factors that act as immune adjuvants for allergens, and reduced exposure to beneficial factors that induce allergen tolerance. Harmful factors include air pollutan

Detection of Environmental Cues by TAAR Family.

The trace amine-associated receptor (TAAR) family is a chemosensory system dedicated to the detection of volatile and water-soluble amine odorants. Unlike canonical odorant receptors (ORs), TAARs function as highly tuned evolutionary sensors that assign innate behavioral valence to critical ecological cues. In this chapter, we examine how TAARs decode the environmental amine landscape to drive survival and social behaviors, focusing on predator avoidance triggered by 2-phenylethylamine, as well as conspecific attraction and social hierarchy formation mediated by trimethylamine. We trace the bi

Environmental Factors in Type 1 Diabetes.

The contribution of environmental factors to the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes is considered substantial, but their identification has turned out to be challenging. Large prospective studies are crucial for reliable identification of environmental risk and protective factors. However, only few large prospective birth cohort studies have been carried out. Enterovirus infections have shown quite consistent risk association with the initiation of islet autoimmunity (IA) across these studies. Also, certain dietary factors have been consistently associated with IA risk, omega-3 fatty acids invers

Occupational, Environmental, and Irritant-induced Cough.

Occupational and environmental exposures contribute to a significant, yet often underrecognized, proportion of chronic cough cases. Airway irritants activate sensory neurons through transient receptor potential ion channels, inducing peripheral and central sensitization that persists beyond the exposure period. Common triggers include isocyanates, dusts, fumes, and air pollutants found across diverse industries. Despite recommendations for routine exposure assessment, systematic evaluation remains uncommon in clinical practice. Accurate recognition necessitates detailed exposure histories, tem

Microplastics as an environmental driver of impaired nutrition.

Microplastics are ubiquitous in the human diet, and their interactions with nutrients during digestion may represent an overlooked factor in impaired human nutrition. Here, we show that common plastic particles, including HDPE and PTFE, adsorb dietary proteins and lipids under gastrointestinal conditions, reducing their bioavailability. Exposure to these particles impairs nutrient absorption in vitro, highlighting a link between environmental plastic pollution and compromised digestive efficiency. These findings reveal a pathway by which microplastics may contribute to potential nutritional de

[Environmental exposome and interstitial lung diseases].

Interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) encompass a heterogeneous group of pulmonary disorders whose prevalence is increasing, partly driven by the environmental exposome. Fine particulate matter (PM2.5), air pollutants, bioaerosols, and occupational exposures (such as silica, asbestos, and organic dust) play a major role in the initiation, progression, and exacerbations of ILDs. These agents induce oxidative stress, inflammation, and fibrotic activation. Conditions such as asbestosis, anthracosilicosis, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, sarcoidosis, and hypersensitivity pneumonitis illustrate the inte
