Epidemiological impact of Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis screening in men having sex with men: a modelling study.

OBJECTIVES: The impact of the systematic screening of Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) and Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) in men having sex with men (MSM) on these pathogens' epidemiology remains unclear. We conducted a modelling study to analyse this impact in French MSM. METHODS: We modelled NG and CT transmission using a site-specific deterministic compartmental model. We calibrated NG and CT prevalence at baseline using results from MSM enrolled in the Dat'AIDS cohort. The baseline scenario was based on 1 million MSM, 40 000 of whom were tested every 90 days and 960 000 every 200 days. Incidence ra

An efficient nonstandard computer method to solve a compartmental epidemiological model for COVID-19 with vaccination and population migration.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In this manuscript, we consider a compartmental model to describe the dynamics of propagation of an infectious disease in a human population. The population considers the presence of susceptible, exposed, asymptomatic and symptomatic infected, quarantined, recovered and vaccinated individuals. In turn, the mathematical model considers various mechanisms of interaction between the sub-populations in addition to population migration. METHODS: The steady-state solutions for the disease-free and endemic scenarios are calculated, and the local stability of the equilibium

Malaria time series in the extra-Amazon region of Brazil: epidemiological scenario and a two-year prediction model.

BACKGROUND: In Brazil, malaria is caused mainly by the Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum species. Its transmission occurs in endemic and non-endemic areas. Malaria geography in Brazil has retracted and is now concentrated in the North region. The Brazilian Amazon region accounts for 99% of Brazil's cases. Brazil's extra-Amazon region has a high frequency of imported cases and in 2019 presented a mortality rate 123 times higher than the Amazon region. Extra-Amazon cases present risks of reintroduction. This study aims to characterize the epidemiological scenario for malaria in the extr

Open globe injuries: Epidemiology, visual and surgical predictive variables, prognostic models, and economic cost analysis.

BACKGROUND: Open globe injuries (OGI) represent a visually and economically devastating cause of vision loss. We examined the epidemiology, predictive variables, prognostic models, and economic cost of surgically managed OGI. METHODS: A retrospective tertiary centre study from 2008 to 2018 of 155 consecutive OGI in individuals aged 16 and older was performed. Medical records review, application of Ocular Trauma Score (OTS) and Classification and Regression Tree Analysis (CART) and cost analysis were undertaken. Key outcomes measured were visual acuity, number of operating theatre visits, prog

Modelling the epidemiology of residual Plasmodium vivax malaria in a heterogeneous host population: A case study in the Amazon Basin.

The overall malaria burden in the Americas has decreased dramatically over the past two decades, but residual transmission pockets persist across the Amazon Basin, where Plasmodium vivax is the predominant infecting species. Current elimination efforts require a better quantitative understanding of malaria transmission dynamics for planning, monitoring, and evaluating interventions at the community level. This can be achieved with mathematical models that properly account for risk heterogeneity in communities approaching elimination, where few individuals disproportionately contribute to overa

Epidemiological impact of targeted interventions for people with diabetes mellitus on tuberculosis transmission in India: Modelling based predictions.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a leading driver of tuberculosis (TB) disease in TB-DM burdened countries. We aimed to assess the impact on TB disease of several intervention strategies targeting people with DM in India. METHODS: A previously validated TB-DM mathematical model was extended to include interventions targeting DM individuals. The model stratified the population by age, DM status, TB infection status and stage, TB disease form, treatment, recovery, and intervention status. RESULTS: By 2050, different TB vaccination strategies (coverage of 50 % and vaccine efficacies rang

Bridging the gap between HIV epidemiology and antiretroviral resistance evolution: Modelling the spread of resistance in South Africa.

The scale-up of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in South Africa substantially reduced AIDS-related deaths and new HIV infections. However, its success is threatened by the emergence of resistance to non-nucleoside reverse-transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTI). The MARISA (Modelling Antiretroviral drug Resistance In South Africa) model presented here aims at investigating the time trends and factors driving NNRTI resistance in South Africa. MARISA is a compartmental model that includes the key aspects of the local HIV epidemic: continuum of care, disease progression, and gender. The dynamics of NNRTI r

[Complex regional pain syndrome following distal fractures of the radius : Epidemiology, pathophysiological models, diagnostics and therapy].

The complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) still represents an incompletely etiologically understood complication following fractures of the distal radius. The incidence of CRPS following fractures of the distal radius varies between 1 % and 37 %. Pathophysiologically, a complex interaction of inflammatory, somatosensory, motor and autonomic changes is suspected, leading to a persistent maladaptive response and sensitization of the central and peripheral nervous systems with development of the corresponding symptoms. Decisive for the diagnostics are a detailed patient medical history and a clin

Using an epidemiological model to investigate unwarranted variation: the case of ventilation tubes for otitis media with effusion in England.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate unwarranted variation in ventilation tube insertions for otitis media with effusion in children in England. This procedure is known to be 'overused' from clinical audits, as only one in three ventilation tube insertions conforms to the appropriateness criteria of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE); but audits cannot identify the scale of 'underuse' - i.e. patients who would benefit but are not treated. METHODS: To explore both 'underuse' and 'overuse' of ventilation tubes for otitis media with effusion, we developed an epidemiological model

Populations and partnerships: insights from metapopulation and pair models into the epidemiology of gonorrhoea and other sexually transmitted infections.

BACKGROUND: Models of sexually transmitted infection (STI) transmission can offer insights as to why gonorrhoea and other STIs are disproportionately concentrated in epidemiologically distinct subpopulations. METHODS: We highlight two different constructs for modelling STIs by drawing on previously published work on pair and metapopulation models, and reanalyzed partnership data from the National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles II (NATSAL II) in the UK. RESULTS: Pair models account for intrapair reinfections and are necessary to illustrate the importance of partnership dynamics. Th

Modeling the epidemiological history of plague in Central Asia: palaeoclimatic forcing on a disease system over the past millennium.

BACKGROUND: Human cases of plague (Yersinia pestis) infection originate, ultimately, in the bacterium's wildlife host populations. The epidemiological dynamics of the wildlife reservoir therefore determine the abundance, distribution and evolution of the pathogen, which in turn shape the frequency, distribution and virulence of human cases. Earlier studies have shown clear evidence of climatic forcing on contemporary plague abundance in rodents and humans. RESULTS: We find that high-resolution palaeoclimatic indices correlate with plague prevalence and population density in a major plague hos

Analysis of epidemiological peculiarities of rubella based on a mathematical model (according to observations over 10 years in Moscow).

The main epidemiological values characterizing rubella in Moscow were calculated on the basis of a new mathematical model. Quantitative estimates of the intensity of infection in different age groups of the population were obtained. It has been established that the risk of infection in children is especially high in comparison with adult population. That is why 98% of the population aged 15 are immune. The probability of falling ill with rubella was determined for persons with different antibody levels. The cases of congenital rubella in Moscow are rare due to the low risk of infection in adul

Modeling the Potential Public Health Impact of Updated COVID-19 Vaccination Strategies in Singapore: Epidemiological Data Update.

INTRODUCTION: This study estimated the potential public health impact of alternative COVID-19 vaccination strategies in Singapore. METHODS: The outcomes of alternative vaccination strategies using a Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine updated to the latest circulating strain were estimated using a combined decision tree-Markov cohort model. The model was previously used to estimate the impact of vaccination based on epidemiological data from 2021/22 and vaccine coverage data from 2022/23. It has now been updated with epidemiology data from 2023/24 and an assumed vaccine coverage of 20%. Age-spec

In-hospital electronic monitoring system approaches to epidemiologic investigation and predictive modeling of contrast-induced acute kidney injury.

Contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI), the third most common cause of hospital-acquired kidney injury, is associated with poor clinical outcomes, highlighting the need for accurate prediction. In this study, we used an electronic hospital monitoring system to retrospectively analyze 3,437 patients who underwent elective angiography at a large tertiary regional referral center in eastern China between 2019 and 2024, establishing a comprehensive epidemiological database. The system detected a CI-AKI incidence of 10.53% (362 cases) and revealed a striking under-diagnosis rate of 92.27% in

Assessing vertical transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in high-rise apartments via a joint epidemiologic and modeling investigation.

High-rise apartments (HRAs) present a complex environment with multiple routes of infection, especially for respiratory pathogens like SARS-CoV-2. With HRAs serving as the dominant housing modality in many dense urban regions worldwide, particularly in dense Asian cities such as Singapore, where high-rise living is normative, understanding transmission within such settings is essential for both global and region-specific public health preparedness. In this study, we assessed transmission risks and potential routes of transmission within HRAs based on observed severe acute respiratory syndrome

Establishing Epidemiological Cutoff Values for Helicobacter pylori Strains in Korea: A Model-Based Analysis of Antibiotic Resistance Patterns.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The absence of standardized clinical minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) breakpoints for Helicobacter pylori infection has resulted in inconsistent resistance definitions, even within the same research group in Korea. Therefore, establishing epidemiological cutoff values (ECOFFs) is essential for standardization. METHODS: The MIC distributions for antibiotics commonly used against H. pylori infection in South Korea were analyzed from 2015 to 2023. A total of 5,925 primary H. pylori isolates were collected from five data sources, and MIC values were determined using the ser

Estimating the epidemiological and economic impact of providing nutritional care for tuberculosis-affected households across India: a modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 20% of global tuberculosis incidence is attributable to undernutrition, increasing to more than a third in India. Targeting nutritional interventions to tuberculosis-affected households is a policy priority, but understanding of epidemiological and economic impacts is limited. We aimed to estimate the population-level epidemiological and economic effect of such an intervention. METHODS: We used a previously published, age-stratified, compartmental transmission model of tuberculosis in India, and incorporated explicit BMI strata linked to disease progression and treat
