The etiology of avascular necrosis associated with slipped capital femoral epiphysis has not been well understood. The aims of this study were to clarify the blood supply to the slipped epiphysis and to examine whether this vascular supply is damaged before the reduction. Twelve patients (12 hips) underwent selective angiography of the medial circumflex femoral artery. There were seven stable slips and five unstable slips. All patients with slips underwent angiography before reduction, and one patient with an unstable slip underwent angiography both before and after reduction. The superior ret

A case of a 39 year old male patient with slipped capital femoral epiphysis and idiopathic panhypopituitarism is reported. A review of the literature shows that a slipped epiphysis with hypothalamo-hypophyseal dysfunction, may be observed either in a proportional pituitary dwarfism or in a skeletal disproportion of the eunuchoidal or even of the acromegalic type. This association leads to examine the causal role of the hormonal status.

Clinical and histopathological similarities and rare association of Blount's disease with various proximal femoral physeal affections (i.e. adolescent coxa vara and slipped capital femoral epiphysis) are well known. Association of tibia vara with another epiphyseal disease of the proximal femur has not been reported previously. In this paper, a monozygotic set of twins with concordant bilateral epiphyseal growth disturbance of the proximal femur and unilateral late-onset tibia vara is presented. Radiological characteristics of the affected knees revealed a wedging in the proximal tibial epiphy

The natural course of slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is biphasic. During the active course there is a slow progression of the epiphyseal tilt. A certain remodeling potential around the head neck junction can be observed, the goal of which is self-limitation of the dislocation process. Closure of the epiphyseal plate terminates the first phase. The resulting deformity is called prearthrosis. Long-term research is being devoted to determining whether coxarthrosis is going to develop in the further course of the disease and, if so, when. In agreement with many researchers, this author f

BACKGROUND: The time to diagnosis in stable slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is often several months because of nebulous history, symptoms of knee/thigh pain, and Medicaid insurance. This study examined the impact of socioeconomic status and demographics on the time to diagnosis and SCFE severity in Indiana children.
METHODS: A retrospective review of all patients at a tertiary children's hospital with SCFE from January 2010 through March 2021 was performed. Standard demographic data and type of insurance was collected. Neighborhood Atlas Mapping was used to determine the state decile

BACKGROUND: Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is a frequent chronic and often bilateral atraumatic slippage of the epiphysis relative to the femoral neck in adolescence. The success of the treatment depends on the extent of the slippage and possible complications.
OBJECTIVES: Review on current trends in clinical examination and diagnostic imaging protocols. Commonly used imaging techniques, methods of measuring the slippage and treatment-relevant classification schemes are presented.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: An overview on the clinical findings, the diagnostic procedures and the classif

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) involves displacement of the proximal femoral metaphysis relative to a fixed epiphysis, usually during a period of rapid growth and unique physeal susceptibility. Patients have characteristic clinical, histologic, and radiologic features. Several clinical signs and medical diagnoses should prompt radiologic and laboratory workup. Limp or hip or knee pain in a patient 10 to 16 years old should include SCFE in the differential. If confirmed, appropriate treatment involves proximal femoral physeal stabilization and/or realignment. The optimal surgical trea

RATIONALE: Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is a common adolescent hip disorder, but its association with hypothyroidism remains rare and poorly understood. This case highlights the importance of considering endocrine disorders, such as hypothyroidism, as potential risk factors in atypical SCFE presentations, particularly when trauma or other common etiologies are absent.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 14-year-old boy presented with progressive, nontraumatic left hip pain that worsened over 6 weeks, eventually leading to complete immobility. Initially managed unsuccessfully with traditional Chin

BACKGROUND: The New Zealand Māori and Pacific ethnicities have the highest burden of slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) worldwide. Therefore, New Zealand provides a rich and unique therapeutic and research environment for this devastating hip condition.
METHODS: A systematic literature review was performed using MEDLINE, PubMed, and Google Scholar from January 1, 1900, to December 31, 2019, with the following keywords: New Zealand, SCFE, slipped capital femoral epiphysis, SUFE, and slipped upper femoral epiphysis. The references were also screened.
RESULTS: Eight original scientific re

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is the most common hip disorder in adolescents, occurring in 10.8 per 100,000 children. SCFE usually occurs in those eight to 15 years of age and is one of the most commonly missed diagnoses in children. SCFE is classified as stable or unstable based on the stability of the physis. It is associated with obesity, growth spurts, and (occasionally) endocrine abnormalities such as hypothyroidism, growth hormone supplementation, hypogonadism, and panhypopituitarism. Patients with SCFE usually present with limping and poorly localized pain in the hip, groin,

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is a relatively common hip disorder often seen in overweight, peripubertal children. Although the exact etiology is uncertain, it is generally accepted that underlying endocrinopathies play a role in the pathogenesis. Hypothyroidism is the endocrine disorder cited most commonly in association with SCFE, and patients often have no history of thyroid dysfunction at the time of presentation. Despite being a well-recognized risk factor, recommendations for screening thyroid function in patients with typical presentations of SCFE have not been deemed cost-ef

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is a condition of the immature hip in which mechanical overload of the proximal femoral physis results in anterior and superior displacement of the femoral metaphysis relative to the epiphysis. The treatment of SCFE is surgical, as the natural history of nonsurgical treatment is slip progression and early arthritis. Despite advances in treatment, much controversy exists regarding the best treatment, and complication rates remain high. Complications include osteonecrosis, chondrolysis, SCFE-induced impingement, and related articular degeneration, fixatio
