Laboratory rats (Rattus norvegicus) were infected with Echinostoma paraensei (Trematoda: Echinostomatidae). Complete blood counts are used frequently by physicians to assess and manage the development of complications of diseases. We studied 100 patients bitten by Bothrops jararaca snakes, and correlated their haematological values with the severity of envenoming and the development of complications. Pseudohyperkalaemia in thrombocythaemia, in its primary form or associated with polycythaemia vera, can occur with platelet counts in excess of 600 X 10(9)/l, and it is not related to high leukocyte or thrombocyte counts. An increment of 0.15 mmol/l serum potassium was found for every 100 X 10(9)/l rise in platelet count with a correlation coefficient of 0.82. Potassium from platelets is not released during the aggregation phase but during the degranulation phase of the coagulation process.

Fifty children (mean age 8 years) with an absolute eosinophil count ranging from 1956 to 28,500 were studied in a tertiary hospital in Nepal. Most had multisystem involvement: 47 had constitutional symptoms; 38 had gastrointestinal symptoms; and 37 had respiratory symptoms. Abdominal pain, fever, cough and weight loss were the most common presentations while pleural effusion, ascites, pericardial effusion, abdominal nodes and high erythrocyte sedimentation rates were the common investigational findings.

A six-year-old boy with high-grade fever and abdominal pain in the epigastric region was examined with ultrasonogram of the abdomen.
