DIABASE: an automatically filled single-centre registry of diabetes mellitus in the Netherlands, combining clinical data with real-world longitudinal wearable device data-a study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Advancements in technology for treating diabetes mellitus (DM) are progressing rapidly. With the growing availability and use of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems and continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII), glucose regulation is improved in individuals with DM, which will lead to less long-term complications and reduce the overall disease burden on patients with DM. Collecting vast amount of biomedical data, these devices combined with clinical outcome data provide more insight into the development and treatment of the disease. The objective of the DIABASE init

Evaluating the Appropriateness of Podcasts to Improve the Knowledge and Awareness of Selected Health Topics Among Undergraduate General Nursing Students: Protocol for an International Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Podcasts have proven to be a successful alternative source of educational material for students. Given the ability to listen to podcasts 24/7 and while on the go, this technology has the potential to provide informative and educational material to a large number of people at any given time. Podcasts are usually freely available on commonly used mobile devices, such as smartphones, laptops, and tablets. OBJECTIVE: This paper describes the impact of health-related podcasts as an intervention tool to support the knowledge and awareness of nursing students on a given topic. METHODS:

Comparison of brace to observation in stable, radiological developmental dysplasia of the hip: a protocol for a global multicentre non-inferiority randomised trial.

INTRODUCTION: Brace treatment is common to address radiological dysplasia in infants with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH); however, it is unclear whether bracing provides significant benefit above careful observation by ultrasound. If observation alone is non-inferior to bracing for radiological dysplasia, unnecessary treatment may be avoided. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine whether observation is non-inferior to bracing for infants with radiological dysplasia. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This will be a multicentre, global, randomised, non-inferiority trial performed u

Informed consent in human research: what to say and how to say it.

To ensure that the possibility of harm to human research subjects is minimized, clinical trials and other research protocols are subject to oversight by Institutional Review Boards (IRBs). IRBs require that subjects be fully informed about the real or potential risks of participation in a research study. The use of radiological examinations in research protocols subjects the participants to exposure to ionizing radiation, which in theory carries a risk of stochastic effects such as radiation-induced cancer, and in practice may lead to deterministic effects such as skin injury. Because IRB memb

Brain death and the historical understanding of bioethics.

In a 1968 Report, the Ad Hoc Committee of the Harvard Medical School to Examine the Definition of Brain Death promulgated influential criteria for the idea and practice known as "brain death." Before and since the Committee met, brain death has been a focal point of visions and nightmares of medical progress, purpose, and moral authority. Critics of the Committee felt it was deaf to apparently central moral considerations and focused on the self-serving purpose of expanding transplantation. Historical characterizations of the uses and meanings of brain death and the work of the Committee have

Patient and IRB perspectives on biobank consent models: implications for international policy from Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Biobank consent models are contested globally. The EU's GDPR Article 89, the US revised Common Rule (2018), and international guidelines offer divergent approaches to balancing participant autonomy and research efficiency. Despite ongoing policy debate, empirical evidence comparing research ethics oversight bodies (IRBs) with potential participants remains limited, particularly in Asia, where rapid biobank development has proceeded with limited stakeholder input. Taiwan's Human Biobank Management Act provides an opportunity to examine whether governance frameworks adequately addres

Views on consent approaches used in emergency and critical care research: a rapid, systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Obtaining informed consent can be challenging in emergency and critical care research due to the acute and severe nature of the patient's condition. However, such research is urgently needed to inform practice and optimise patient outcomes. While alternative consent approaches have been commonly used, opinions may vary, particularly among diverse and underserved patient groups and in the context of the recent COVID-19 pandemic. The objective of this review was to assess views of alternative consent methods in emergency and critical care research. METHODS: We conducted a rapid syst

Quality assurance of ethical issues and regulatory aspects relating to good clinical practices in the HELENA Cross-Sectional Study.

RATIONALE: Research involving humans is regulated by regulatory authorities through their specific requirements and controls. The Healthy Life Style in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence Cross-Sectional Study (HELENA-CSS) is a multicenter biomedical research study of adolescents in several representative European cities, which requires satisfying medico-regulatory requirements including Independent Ethics Committee (IEC) approval and agreement by the national or local regulatory authorities. To achieve a high level of quality assurance relating to ethical issues, we followed the good clinical

[The dying patient's preferences when end-of-life decisions are made].

BACKGROUND, MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this presentation we discuss end-of-life decisions on the basis of the history of a young patient with motor neuron disease and pneumonia. RESULTS: The patient wanted treatment for an acute pneumonia. Weaning from the respirator turned out to be difficult and the patient's condition was complicated by pneumothorax. He refused further treatment and managed to disconnect the respirator. He even tried self-extubation, but did not succeed, as his muscle strength was impaired. After two days the pneumothorax had spontaneously resorbed and the patient was awake.

[Ethical problems with the decision of refusal to a request for intra-conjugal in vitro fertilization].

What is our knowledge of the couples who suffer refusal of access to IVF when information is available for only 52% of the pregnancies obtained by IVF? With a retrospective study on IVF refusal datas in a centre where they are available, and an investigation by questionnaire in twelve other centers, the authors tried to evaluate the incidence of these refusal. IVF refusal concern 6 to 30% of the couples addressed, varying on a plurifactorial preselection; but a register including refusal is available in only four of the twelve centers. The main reason for refusal is maternal age. Only three of

Comparison of conventional and cooled radiofrequency treatment of the genicular nerves versus sham procedure for patients with chronic knee pain: protocol for a multicentre, double-blind, randomised controlled trial (COGENIUS).

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of chronic knee pain is increasing. Osteoarthritis (OA) and persistent postsurgical pain (PPSP) are two important causes of knee pain. Chronic knee pain is primarily treated with medications, physiotherapy, life-style changes and intra-articular infiltrations. A radiofrequency treatment (RF) of the genicular nerves is a therapeutical option for refractory knee pain. This study investigates the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of conventional and cooled RF in patients suffering from chronic, therapy resistant, moderate to severe knee pain due to OA and PPSP. Study protocol for double-blind, randomised placebo-controlled trial evaluating semitendinosus function and morbidity following tendon harvesting for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction augmented by platelet-rich plasma.

INTRODUCTION: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture is debilitating, often requiring surgical reconstruction. An ACL reconstruction (ACLR) using a tendon autograft harvested from the semitendinosus results in substantial injury to the donor muscle. Following ACLR, patients rarely return to their preinjury level of physical activity, are at elevated risk of secondary lower limb injuries and early onset knee osteoarthritis. To date, no randomised controlled trial has evaluated the efficacy of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in aiding knee function and semitendinosus morphology of following ALCR.

Long-term outcomes for Asian patients with X-linked hypophosphataemia: rationale and design of the SUNFLOWER longitudinal, observational cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: X-linked hypophosphataemic rickets/osteomalacia (XLH) is a chronic, debilitating genetic disease characterised by skeletal abnormalities and growth disorder. The burden of XLH begins in childhood and continues throughout life. Conventional medical therapy with phosphate, active vitamin D and surgery do not address the underlying pathophysiology of the disease. While treatment during childhood may improve bone deformity and growth retardation, a large proportion of adult patients still fail to reach normal stature. Furthermore, adult patients with XLH report comorbidities associat

Screen Your Way Study Protocol: Embedding community driven models to increase cervical screening via HPV self-collection to improve cervical cancer outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

In July 2022, Human Papillomavirus (HPV) self-collection became available as a choice to all participants in Australia's National Cervical Screening Program (NCSP). This policy change aims to facilitate equitable access to cervical screening; however, further evidence is needed to support its implementation and reach under-screened women and people with a cervix. This implementation study seeks to embed HPV self-collection into Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs) and/or primary care organisations whose context is similar to that of an ACCHO.

Rationale and methodology of a multicentric prospective cohort study on 'Longitudinal Effects of Air Pollution Exposure on Adolescent Lungs (APEAL)' in urban India: APEAL protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Air pollution is a significant global health concern, with studies from the USA and Europe linking long-term exposure to respiratory issues and poor school attendance in children. While Indian cities experience much higher pollution levels, the impact on lung development in Indian children remains unclear. This study aims to assess the burden of impaired lung function in Indian children and identify key factors contributing to pollution-induced lung injury. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This longitudinal, prospective cohort study is conducted in four cities categorised by particulate ma

Effect of electroacupuncture on discomfort in patients undergoing colonoscopy: protocol for a multicentre, randomised, controlled clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Colonoscopy is currently the most commonly used and effective method for early detection, diagnosis and treatment of tumours of the colon and rectum. However, similar to other invasive procedures, it is associated with adverse reactions such as pain and abdominal distension. Electroacupuncture (EA) has been proposed as a potential treatment for relieving this discomfort; however, there is limited evidence supporting its efficacy. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of EA when used prior to colonoscopy. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This multicentre, rand

HIV-1 subtype-specific drug resistance on dolutegravir-based antiretroviral therapy: protocol for a multicentre study (DTG RESIST).

INTRODUCTION: HIV drug resistance poses a challenge to the United Nation's goal of ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The integrase strand transfer inhibitor (InSTI) dolutegravir, which has a higher resistance barrier, was endorsed by the WHO in 2019 for first-line, second-line and third-line antiretroviral therapy (ART). This multiplicity of roles of dolutegravir in ART may facilitate the emergence of dolutegravir resistance. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Nested within the International epidemiology Databases to Evaluate AIDS (IeDEA), DTG RESIST is a multicentre study of adults and adolescents living wit
