Listening effort and downstream effects due to hearing loss in children and young people: an online quantitative questionnaire-based observational study.

INTRODUCTION: The clinical application of listening effort (LE) is challenging due to the lack of consensus regarding measuring the concept. Correlational analysis between different measuring instruments shows conditional and weak relationships, indicating they capture different dimensions of LE. Current research has suggested possible links between LE and downstream consequences such as fatigue, stress and confidence. One way to clinically measure LE would be to focus on its corollaries. Further research is needed to explore whether tools used to measure these downstream effects can be applie

What to measure in biliary atresia research: study protocol for developing a core outcome set.

AIM: Extrahepatic biliary atresia is a rare disorder. This creates challenges in the quality and quantity of research conducted. This issue is exacerbated by the potential heterogeneity in the reported outcomes in research examining the management of biliary atresia. A core outcome set is required to standardise reporting on the management of biliary atresia in research, facilitate systematic reviews that include outcomes of greatest importance to patients and clinicians, and to evaluate the quality of the existing evidence base on the management of biliary atresia. METHODS: A list of all pot

Combining value of information analysis and ethical argumentation in decisions on participation of vulnerable patients in clinical research.

BACKGROUND: The participation of vulnerable patients in clinical research poses apparent ethical dilemmas. Depending on the nature of the vulnerability, their participation may challenge the ethical principles of autonomy, non-maleficence, or justice. On the other hand, non-participation may preclude the building of a knowledge base that is a prerequisite for defining the optimal clinical management of vulnerable patients. Such clinical uncertainty may also incur substantial economic costs. MAIN TEXT: We present the participation of pre-menopausal women with atrial fibrillation in trials of n

The ARISE (Autism Research Initiatives for Suicidality and Empowerment) Project: A study protocol for a modified James Lind Alliance priority-setting process determining research priorities for suicidality in autistic youth.

INTRODUCTION: Autistic children and adolescents (herein, youth) are at 3.5 times greater risk of suicide attempts and deaths than the general population, with attempts beginning as early as 10 years of age. However, little is known about the predictors of suicidality or how to provide adequate support to prevent premature mortality in autistic youth. This study will fill critical research and knowledge gaps by identifying the needs and preferences for future research on suicidality in autistic youth. By completing this process alongside the perspectives of caregivers, clinicians and policymake

Effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of community-based TB screening algorithms using computer-aided detection (CAD) technology alone compared with CAD combined with point-of-care C reactive protein testing in Lesotho and South Africa: protocol for a paired screen-positive trial.

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant public health challenge in many African communities, where underreporting and underdiagnosis are prevalent due to barriers in accessing care and inadequate diagnostic tools. This is particularly concerning in hard-to-reach areas with a high burden of TB/HIV co-infection, where missed or delayed diagnoses exacerbate disease transmission, increase mortality and lead to severe economic and health consequences. To address these challenges, it is crucial to evaluate innovative, cost-effective, community-based screening strategies that can improv

Utilising the PARIHS Framework to Assess and Enhance the Implementation of Evidence-Based Nursing Practice in Intensive Care Units-A Mixed Method Study.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence-based practice (EBP) plays an indispensable role in ensuring the safety and quality of nursing interventions, especially in labor-intensive and technology-dependent clinical environments such as intensive care units (ICUs). However, implementing EBP continues to be challenging due to perennial structural, organisational, and workforce issues. Concepts of implementation science can provide a framework with which to assess and facilitate the integration of factors that drive EBP implementation within ICUs. AIM: To assess the level of EBP implementation within ICUs and exa

ENDOCELL-Seud: a Delphi protocol to harmonise methods in endometrial cell culturing.

IN VITRO: culturing of endometrial cells obtained from the uterine mucosa or ectopic sites is used to study molecular and cellular signalling relevant to physiologic and pathologic reproductive conditions. However, the lack of consensus on standard operating procedures for deriving, characterising and maintaining primary cells in two- or three-dimensional cultures from eutopic or ectopic endometrium may be hindering progress in this area of research. Guidance for unbiased in vitro research methodologies in the field of reproductive science remains essential to increase confidence in the reliab

Population-based study of pharmacogenetics and pharmacokinetics in Southern African patients with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (PoPG): a protocol for the Namibian cohort.

BACKGROUND: Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) is an urgent public health challenge in Namibia, with profound socioeconomic consequences. The high burden of both tuberculosis and HIV complicates treatment and underscores the need for optimised drug therapies. Precision medicine, which leverages patient-specific genetic and molecular information, offers promise for improving MDR-TB outcomes. However, its effective application relies on population-specific data, particularly understanding how individuals metabolise tuberculosis drugs and how genetic diversity drives variability in treatme

Prevalence of pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain and associated factors in Australia: a cross-sectional study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain (PPGP) is a common musculoskeletal disorder. Women with PPGP report difficulty performing everyday functional activities, such as standing and walking. However, the magnitude of the problem remains unknown in Australia. It is important to determine how many women are affected by this condition and the factors associated with PPGP as this will direct healthcare services to being able to better manage women during pregnancy. Thus, this study aims to determine the prevalence of PPGP and associated factors in a Western Sydney population. METHODS

Secondary prevention and cognitive function after stroke: a study protocol for a 5-year follow-up of the ASPIRE-S cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive impairment is common following stroke and can increase disability and levels of dependency of patients, potentially leading to greater burden on carers and the healthcare system. Effective cardiovascular risk factor control through secondary preventive medications may reduce the risk of cognitive decline. However, adherence to medications is often poor and can be adversely affected by cognitive deficits. Suboptimal medication adherence negatively impacts secondary prevention targets, increasing the risk of recurrent stroke and further cognitive decline. The aim of this

Early life exposures of enteric pathogens and nutritional outcomes in Timor-Leste: a longitudinal birth cohort study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Child undernutrition remains a major public health problem in low- and middle-income countries. Timor-Leste has one of the highest childhood stunting rates worldwide, affecting an estimated 47% of children under 5 years. Repeated exposure to enteric pathogens is increasingly recognised as a contributor to malnutrition, yet the interplay between enteric infection, environmental exposure and socioeconomic factors remains poorly understood in this setting. This protocol describes a longitudinal birth cohort study, conducted within a One Health framework, examining early-life enteric

Rationale and design of the REMECHOQUE multicentre registry protocol: evaluating therapeutic trends in cardiogenic shock.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiogenic shock (CS) is a complex syndrome characterised by primary cardiac dysfunction. Despite advances in therapeutic options such as mechanical cardiac support, it remains associated with high mortality. Although previous registries have described heterogeneous populations and outcomes across different centres, contemporary real-world data on management practices remain limited. This gap is particularly evident in low- and middle-income countries, where there is no robust registry that clearly defines the current state of CS management. Therefore, a multicentre registry is
