[Analyses of clinical and radiological characteristics of IgG4-related rhinosinusitis].

Objectives: To discuss the clinical and radiological features of IgG4-related rhinosinusitis. Methods: In this retrospective research, the c … sic feature of CT scans was thickening of the involved bilateral ethmoid sinus mucous membrane with ethmoid bone absorption, which was mainly at midline. Histological features were severe inflammation of the mucosal tissue with mass of neutrophils and plasma cell infiltration. All patients were treated by methylprednisolone combined with cyclophosphamide or me …

Naso-Orbital-Ethmoid Fracture Repair Techniques: A Systematic Review.

PURPOSE: Naso-orbital-ethmoid (NOE) complex fractures present a challenge to repair. The classification system used to categorize the fracture type was established in 1991 based off the medial canthal tendon attachment. The primary objective was to systematically review the literature outlining repair techniques for NOE fracture after the adoption of the Markowitz classification system. METHODS: A systematic search was performed in PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science to identify peer-reviewed research. Eligible studies were peer-reviewed articles reporting on operative techniques used to repai

[Giant chondroma of anterior cranial fossa].

A rare case of the giant chondroma is presented. The patient, 29, carried it over the last 24 years. At his admittance to the neurosurgery department the tumor attained huge dimensions and occupied the basement of the anterior cranial fossa on the left side penetrating into the orbital plates, frontal sinus and ethmoidal labyrinth. Surgery was performed yielding a good result.

A new method for the correction of hypertelorism with preservation of the olfactory nerve filaments.

A method for the preservation of the olfactory nerve filaments in cases of hypertelorism correction is described. The cribriform plate is completely resected and the nerve filaments gathered in the midline after medial rotation of the orbits. In contrast to Converse's (1970) procedure of paramedian osteotomies the method allows full correction of all degrees of hypertelorism, even in the most extreme cases, without olfactory nerve impairment.

Complicated orbital fractures.

A method for the clinical evaluation of patients with orbital and midfacial fractures is presented. Pertinent anatomic relations, classification of fractures, and significant associated injuries are reviewed. Principles of treatment are offered.

Endoscopic Management of a Rare Pediatric Fronto-Ethmoidal Mucocele With Orbital Involvement: Navigating Surgical Challenges.

Paranasal mucoceles are benign lesions causing bone erosion with orbital and intracranial extension. An 11-year-old male presented with right orbital proptosis with restricted movement. Computed tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging revealed a fronto-ethmoidal mucocele involving orbit. Endoscopic marsupialization with drainage and orbital decompression achieved complete clinical and radiological resolution.

Complex nasoethmoid-orbital and midfacial fractures: role of craniofacial surgical techniques and immediate bone grafting.

A detailed review of 104 patients with severe nasoethmoid-orbital injuries has facilitated the classification of these injuries into five types. The recognition and diagnosis of each specific injury pattern will define the correct treatment choice in each instance. Special attention should be focused on injuries with comminution and bone loss in the medial wall and floor of the orbit, loss of cartilaginous nasal support, and orbital displacement and dystopia. An open, direct approach to these fractures with meticulous reduction, internal fixation, and repair of the medial canthal ligaments pro

Sphenoethmoidal mucoceles with intracranial extension.

Mucoceles of the paranasal sinuses are benign, expansile, locally destructive lesions that are thought to occur secondary to obstruction of the sinus ostia. Nasal and/or ocular signs and symptoms are the usual clinical manifestations of mucoceles arising in the ethmoid and sphenoid sinuses, and intracranial extension is rare. We describe three cases of widely destructive sphenoethmoidal mucoceles extending intracranially, with bone erosion and dural exposure in all cases and brain necrosis in one case.

Bone dust and adhesive material for closing bony breaches of the skull. A new method.

Thirty one cases of patients affected by skull lesions are reported: 25 fractures of the frontal sinus, two fractures of ethmoidal bone, two fractures of the floor of the anterior cranial fossa, one fracture of the petrous bone, one opening of the mastoid cells. Five of these patients presented a cerebrospinal fluid fistula. All the patients were surgically treated with a mixture of autogenous sawdust and butyl-2-cyanoacrylate with favorable results in thirty cases. It was necessary to repeat the treatment only in one case and the patient recovered completely.

Single Nasal Bones: A Report of Two Cases.

The nasal bones are important bony parts of the external nose and maxillofacial scaffold. Generally, the nasal bone is a small quadrangular plate paired and attached to the frontonasal suture superiorly and the nasal septum internally. The nasal septum is symmetrically located and comprises the septal cartilage, the perpendicular plate of the ethmoid bone, and the vomer. Herein, we report the anatomy of single nasal bones (SNB) identified in two human skulls. Two adult human skulls were found to have SNB. In one, the nasal septum was bifid and hooked as it joined with the nasal bone superiorly…

Fibrous dysplasia of the maxillary: a case report.

In a 37 year old woman, complaining of right sided rhinorrhea, frontal headache, sneezing and tearing of the eye, fibrous dysplasia was diagnosed based on a radiological "ground glass lesion" of the right maxillo-orbito-ethmoidal area and a hot spot on total body bone scintigraphy. The lesion was resected using a lateral rhinotomy approach with good functional and esthetic result.

[Ethmoidofrontal mucoceles. Their clinical picture, diagnosis and differential diagnosis].

Anterior sitting is the most frequent localisation of frontal or ethmoidal mucocele. Generally its evolution is slow, but some times they evolve as acute inflammatory processes. The AA. report 2 paradigmatic cases of each course. The CAT shows the thinning out of the bone and the spreading of the disease. Comments on the symptomatology, exploratory means and differential diagnosis with other sinusal or orbital conditions.

A new CBCT-based classification of posterior extramural ethmoid cells.

PURPOSE: The study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of extramural expansion of posterior ethmoid cells using Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), as well as to propose anatomical criteria and a classification system for Onodi cells based on their spatial relationship with the sphenoid sinus. METHODS: Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of 513 ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) and dental patients of outpatient clinics, 199 men and 314 women, mean age 36 ± 13 years (range: 18-84 years). RESULTS: Several extramural variants of posterior ethmoid (PE) cells were examined, such as sphenoethmoida

Schwannoma in the Olfactory Groove: Two Case Reports.

The occurrence of an isolated schwannoma in the olfactory groove is extremely rare. We herein present 2 cases of schwannomas in the olfactory groove that were treated with endoscopic excision. In these 2 cases, the tumor originated in the cribriform plate and cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea occurred after tumor resection, which was repaired using tissue grafts.
