Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) were measured in 22 unilateral Menière patients with monaural and binaural stimulation with 250 and 500 Hz tone bursts. For all measurement situations significantly lower VEMP amplitudes were on average measured at the affected side compared to the unaffected side. Unilateral Menière patients have, in contrast to normal subjects, asymmetric VEMPs, indicating a permanently affected vestibular (most likely otolith) system at the side of hearing loss. The diagnostic value of VEMP amplitude asymmetry measurement in individual patients is low, because o

Vestibular dysfunction has been reported in patients with cervical dystonia (CD), but it is still unclear whether the abnormalities occur as part of the CD syndrome or whether they arise from the abnormal posture and movement of the head. We compared vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) recorded from the affected neck muscles (i.e., cervical VEMPs) with those recorded from muscles unaffected by the dystonia, the extraocular muscles (i.e., ocular VEMPs). We compared 21 patients and age-matched normal controls to investigate whether these short-latency reflexes are altered in CD. We als

Testing vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) may be the most important new clinical test for evaluation of vestibular function developed during the past 100 years since the introduction of the caloric test. VEMPs are easily recordable and therefore suitable for everyday testing in clinical neurotology. VEMPs in response to air-conducted sound stimulation using surface electrodes over the sternocleidomastoid muscles reveal saccular function, inferior vestibular nerve function, and vestibulocollic connections. At present, VEMPs are of clinical importance for estimating the severity of p

PURPOSE: The significance of intraoperative somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP) monitoring is well known during spinal surgery. This technology could be beneficial during peripheral nerve surgery as well. In order to illustrate potential applications, two cases of successful peripheral nerve release demonstrated by on-line, intraoperative, SSEP are reported. Clinical and technical features: The first case presents a complex brachial plexus lesion involving two mixed sensory-motor nerves: median and ulnar. The second case involved an entrapment neuropathy of the lateral femoral cutaneous ner

PURPOSE: To describe methods for measuring interocular latency differences of multifocal visual evoked potentials (mfVEP) and for determining regions with abnormal interocular latencies in patients.
METHODS: The mfVEPs from 100 individuals with normal visual fields and normal fundus examinations were analyzed. Individuals ranged in age from 21.6 to 92.4 years. The stimulus was a 60 sector, pattern-reversing dartboard display. Each sector had 16 checks, 8 white (200 cd/m2) and 8 black (< 1 cd/m2). Interocular latency was measured as the temporal shift producing the best cross-correlation value

OBJECTIVES: To clarify if p13-n23 of vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) is independent of cochlear afferents.
METHODS: Twenty normal volunteers and 10 patients with hemifacial palsy enrolled into this study. VEMP and auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) were recorded with or without white noise (WN, 75 dBnHL or 95 dBnHL) ipsilaterally or contralaterally to the stimulated ear. Short tone bursts (STBs) of 0.5 kHz (95 dBnHL, rise/fall time=1 ms, plateau time=2 ms) were presented though headphones. For recording VEMPs surface electromyographic activity was recorded in the supine subject

The aim of this study is to investigate the feasibility of recording vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) using simultaneous binaural acoustic stimulation (B-VEMP), and compare it with that using monaural acoustic stimulation (M-VEMP). Seven healthy volunteers were evoked by initial B-VEMP test and subsequent M-VEMP test, whereas vice versa in another 7 volunteers. All 14 subjects demonstrated both B-VEMPs and M-VEMPs, without significant difference in the latencies of p13 and n23. When using interaural amplitude difference (IAD) ratio for interpreting amplitude, B-VEMPs did not differ

OBJECTIVES: to show that abnormal vestibular evoked myogenic potentials on the sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM) in patients with unilateral Meniere's disease are caused by endolymphatic hydrops.
SUBJECTS: six normal volunteers and 17 patients with unilateral Meniere's disease were examined.
METHODS: click-evoked myogenic potentials were recorded with surface electrodes over each SCM. Responses evoked by clicks recorded after oral administration of glycerol (1.3 g/kg body weight) were compared with those recorded before administration.
RESULTS: the change rate of the p13-n23 amplitude was ca

Hormonal changes that occur during the menstrual cycle of women influence the visual function of females. Estrogen is reported to cause a decrease in the visual transmission time by increasing the sensitivity of receptors in the optic pathways to dopamine. The aim of this study was to search if pattern reversal evoked potentials (PRVEPs) changed during the different phases of the menstrual cycle. PRVEPs of both eyes of 30 healthy women were recorded in 4 different phases of the menstrual cycle, namely, menstrual, follicular, ovulatory and luteal. The highest mean PRVEP latency and the lowest m

Pudendal nerve somatosensory evoked potentials (PN-SSEPs) were recorded in 21 healthy children (age range: 3.3-13.3 years). The dorsal nerve of the penis/clitoris was stimulated and SSEPs were recorded at spinal L1-D12 and at cortical Cz'-Fz. Morphology, latency and amplitude of the cortical SSEPs were evaluated. A cortical response was obtained in all but two subjects. Cortical SSEPs were broader and less defined in shape in the youngest subjects. There was a progressive shortening of the latency of the P and N components during growth. Spinal responses were obtained only in 6 cases. Nine sub

Sixteen children with infantile neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis (INCL), age range 0.5 to 5.4 years, were studied using EEG, electroretinograms (ERG), visual evoked potentials (VEP) and somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP). Electroencephalography was the first of these examinations to reveal abnormalities, however the EEG may be normal at the preclinical stage. The first abnormality to appear was an attenuated reaction to passive eye opening and closing which was followed by disturbances in background activity and diminution in amplitude, and by disappearance of sleep spindles. The gradual disa

PURPOSE: Premature ejaculation has been believed to be psychological in the majority of patients. With few exceptions organic conditions are rarely implicated. We investigated the possible role of sensory function in patients with primary premature ejaculation to determine whether there is an etiological basis for this condition.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed somatosensory evoked potentials from the penis in 34 patients with primary premature ejaculation and in 30 normally potent men. The latencies and amplitudes of the evoked potentials were measured at the penile shaft (dorsal nerve)

To determine the characteristics of multimodal evoked potentials (MEPs) in childhood-onset dentatorubral-palli-doluysian atrophy (DRPLA) we studied three DRPLA patients with progressive myoclonus epilepsy. Brainstem auditory evoked potentials showed reduced or absent brainstem components as well as delayed latencies. In addition, short latency somatosensory evoked potentials (S-SEPs) had prolonged central conduction time and reduced amplitude of cortical components. Two patients with symptom onset in the first decade of life had extremely enlarged flash visual evoked potentials with shortened

Patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) present upper airway obstruction during sleep which can be documented by electromyography. The cause of weakness in oropharyngeal muscles is still unknown. Lesions of pons and medulla oblongata have to be expected. Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) may indicate pathological changes in these regions. Several studies described normal BAEP in OSAS-patients. Moderate forms of OSAS as well as central sleep apnea syndromes were investigated, however. In our study 20 patients (17 men, 3 women, mean age 53.9 +/- 2.1 ys) with severe OSAS (

The pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN) has been implicated in sleep-wake control, arousal responses, and motor functions. The PPN also has been implicated in the generation of the P1 middle-latency auditory-evoked potential. The present study was undertaken to determine the topographical distribution, threshold, and response properties of depth-recorded potentials following auditory click stimulation. Experiments were conducted in both decerebrate cat and rat, with a view towards determining the presence of P1-like middle-latency auditory-evoked potentials in the midbrain of both species. These re
