Sequence type 88 (ST88) methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has been recognized as an important pathogen that causes infections in humans, especially when it has strong biofilm production and multidrug resistance (MDR). However, knowledge of the determinants of resistance or virulence and genomic characteristics of ST88 MRSA from China is still limited. In this study, we employed the antimicrobial resistance (AMR), biofilm formation, and genomic characteristics of ST88 MRSA collected from various foods in China and estimated the worldwide divergence of ST88 MRSA with publicly av

Black widow spiders (members of the genus Latrodectus) are widely feared because of their potent neurotoxic venom. α-Latrotoxin is the vertebrate-specific toxin responsible for the dramatic effects of black widow envenomation. The evolution of this toxin is enigmatic because only two α-latrotoxin sequences are known. In this study, ~4 kb α-latrotoxin sequences and their homologs were characterized from a diversity of Latrodectus species, and representatives of Steatoda and Parasteatoda, establishing the wide distribution of latrotoxins across the mega-diverse spider family Theridiidae. Across

In order to identify the patterns of genetic change of Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) strains circulating in Oita, the complete envelope (E) gene has been sequenced for 35 isolates from swine in a 30-year span. Based on nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequences, the genetic variation was examined, phylogeny was estimated and selection pressures were also analyzed. This study demonstrated that the major genotype (G) of JEV isolates had shifted from GIII to GI in the mid-1990s in Oita. The intensities of selection acting on the Oita GIII and GI strains were found to be almost same. It sugge

Plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs) cause substantial global crop losses, yet the effectiveness of chemical nematicides is declining due to adaptive responses in nematode populations. Current understanding of nematicide resistance remains incomplete, often limited to target-site mutations and metabolic detoxification. This review addresses this gap by providing an integrated perspective on how PPNs evade nematicides across molecular, physiological, and ecological scales. We synthesize established resistance mechanisms alongside underexplored strategies, including cuticle remodeling, behavioral av

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) continues to undergo genetic evolution and remains a major etiological agent of enteric disease in swine, causing significant economic losses worldwide. This study investigated the molecular epidemiology and genetic characteristics of PEDV circulating in Chongqing, China, between 2022 and 2024. A total of 296 diarrheic piglet samples collected from nine regions were screened using RT-qPCR, of which 48.31% (143/296) tested positive for PEDV. A subset of positive samples was subjected to S gene amplification and sequencing, yielding 15 complete sequences. P

The infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) causes significant losses in commercial poultry egg and meat production. Since its first emergence, the genotype GI-23 (Variant 2) has progressively increased its geographical distribution, shown a significant virulence, and challenged the vaccine efficacy. Global viral transmission could be attributed to multiple factors including human related activities such as poultry and vaccine trades while other contributing factors such as the role of wild birds cannot be neglected. Therefore, A total 260 full S1 GI-23 sequences were obtained from Genebank, structu

UNLABELLED: The emergence in humans of the A(H1N1)pdm09 influenza virus, a complex reassortant virus of swine origin, highlighted the importance of worldwide influenza virus surveillance in swine. To date, large-scale surveillance studies have been reported for southern China and North America, but such data have not yet been described for Europe. We report the first large-scale genomic characterization of 290 swine influenza viruses collected from 14 European countries between 2009 and 2013. A total of 23 distinct genotypes were identified, with the 7 most common comprising 82% of the inciden

West Nile virus (WNV) has become firmly established in northeastern US, reemerging every summer since its introduction into North America in 1999. To determine whether WNV overwinters locally or is reseeded annually, we examined the patterns of viral lineage persistence and replacement in Connecticut over 10 consecutive transmission seasons by phylogenetic analysis. In addition, we compared the full protein coding sequence among WNV isolates to search for evidence of convergent and adaptive evolution. Viruses sampled from Connecticut segregated into a number of well-supported subclades by year

Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium) and certain Escherichia coli are human pathogens that have evolved through the acquisition of multiple virulence determinants by horizontal gene transfer. Similar genetic elements, as pathogenicity islands and virulence plasmids, have driven molecular evolution of virulence in both species. In addition, the contribution of prophages has been recently highlighted as a reservoir for pathogenic diversity. Characterization of horizontally acquired virulence genes has several clinical implications. First, identification of virulence determina

White clover (Trifolium repens) is naturally polymorphic for cyanogenesis (hydrogen cyanide release following tissue damage). The ecological factors favouring cyanogenic and acyanogenic plants have been examined in numerous studies over the last half century, making this one of the best-documented examples of an adaptive polymorphism in plants. White clover cyanogenesis is controlled by two, independently segregating Mendelian genes: Ac/ac controls the presence/absence of cyanogenic glucosides; and Li/li controls the presence/absence of their hydrolysing enzyme, linamarase. In this study, we e

The thyroid gland of vertebrates is considered to be homologous to the endostyle of non-vertebrate chordates (cephalochordates, urochordates), a key character for understanding the origin and evolution of the chordate body plan. In lampreys, the larval endostyle transforms into an adult thyroid gland during metamorphosis, reflecting evolutionary changes that occurred in the vertebrate lineage. Focussing on thyroid-like cells in the endostyle, we here relate morphologically visible steps of lamprey (Lampetra fluviatilis) endostyle differentiation to embryonic stages and determine the onset of t

Type 1 wild-vaccine recombinant polioviruses were isolated from poliomyelitis patients in China from 1991 to 1993. We compared the sequences of 34 recombinant isolates over the 1,353-nucleotide (nt) genomic interval (nt 2480 to 3832) encoding the major capsid protein, VP1, and the protease, 2A. All recombinants had a 367-nt block of sequence (nt 3271 to 3637) derived from the Sabin 1 oral poliovirus vaccine strain spanning the 3'-terminal sequences of VP1 (115 nt) and the 5' half of 2A (252 nt). The remaining VP1 sequences were closely (up to 99.5%) related to those of a major genotype of wild

Molecular cloning of thyrotropin-releasing hormone receptors (TRHR) was performed in a teleost, the sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka). Four different TRHR cDNAs were cloned and named TRHR1, TRHR2a, TRHR2b and TRHR3 based on their similarity to known TRHR subtypes in vertebrates. Important residues for TRH binding were conserved in deduced amino acid sequences of the three TRHR subtypes except for the TRHR2b. Seven transmembrane domains were predicted for TRHR1, TRHR2a and TRHR3 proteins but only five for TRHR2b which appears to be truncated. In silico database analysis identified putative TR

The dynamic evolution of signaling pathway remodeling and molecular regulation within the tumor microenvironment (TME) of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) play a critical role in the onset and progression of this malignancy. As chronic hepatitis progresses to cirrhosis and ultimately to HCC, the signaling pathways and TME show stage-specific characteristics that provide important insights into the therapeutic challenges and opportunities. In this review, we profiled the principal components of the HCC TME, along with pivotal signaling pathways, including the receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) and ex

Feline kobuvirus (FKoV) has been linked to diarrheal disease in cats and has recently emerged in several Asian countries. This study aimed to investigate the epidemiological and genetic characterization of FKoV in domestic cats in northern Vietnam from 2022 to 2025. In total, 244 fecal samples were obtained from both healthy and sick cats in Hanoi, Hungyen, Bacninh, and Ninhbinh in the north of Vietnam. Of 244 fecal samples examined, eight (3.28%) samples were found to be positive for the FKoV genome by using the conventional PCR method. Viral genomes were identified in both healthy and sick c

CONTEXT: The chemical effect of carbon dioxide (CO₂) addition on soot formation in flames is significant for developing cleaner combustion technologies, but its atomistic mechanisms remain elusive. This work investigates the formation and evolution of soot nanoparticles from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in ethylene flames under different CO₂ additions using ReaxFF molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The simulation reveals a three-stage process from PAHs to curved fullerene-like soot particles: nucleation, surface growth/coagulation, and graphitization. The results demonstrate that

Pyrolysis temperature regulates the molecular composition of dissolved black carbon (DBC), which influences its electron transfer capacity and stability. However, the impact of these temperature-induced changes on DBC's ability to facilitate microbial dissimilatory iron reduction (DIR), as well as its molecular transformations during the process, remains poorly understood. In this study, DBC samples derived from biochars pyrolyzed at 300, 450, and 600 °C (DBC300, DBC450, and DBC600) were examined for their effectiveness in mediating the microbial reduction of ferrihydrite (Fh). The results sho

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) due to 21-hydroxylase deficiency is one of the most technically challenging monogenic conditions for molecular diagnosis, owing to the complex genomic architecture of the CYP21A2 locus and the extensive homology between the functional gene and its pseudogene. Over the past decades, diagnostic approaches have evolved from locus-specific assays, such as allele-specific polymerase chain reaction, to the combined use of Sanger sequencing and multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA), which together constituted the historical gold-standard approach

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) exhibits substantial molecular and cell-state heterogeneity, together with marked spatial variation in its immune and stromal microenvironment. Histological classification and individual biomarkers alone cannot adequately explain its evolution or heterogeneous treatment responses. This review critically integrates genomic, epigenomic, transcriptomic, single-cell, and spatial omics evidence along a conceptual continuum encompassing tumor-intrinsic molecular evolution, microenvironmental ecosystem remodeling, candidate stratification, and precision therapy.
