Antarctic soils represent one of the most extreme environments for microbial life on Earth, yet they harbor heterogeneous and diverse microbial communities. Biologists have long hypothesized that Antarctic microorganisms are unique from those found on other continents due to the extreme geographic isolation and the cold, dry, and challenging conditions typical of Antarctica. To test this hypothesis, we focused on a cosmopolitan bacterial genus, Arthrobacter, that is widely distributed across global soils. We first profiled a global metagenomic dataset from both Antarctic and non-Antarctic surf

The adverse effects of atmospheric conditions - including ambient air pollution from industry, wildfires and extreme atmospheric temperatures - on human health are well documented. However, their hazardous roles in kidney health have often been overlooked, despite the existence of plausible biological mechanisms for pathogenic effects. Emerging evidence from epidemiological studies indicates that exposures to ambient air pollutants such as particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), nitrogen dioxide, ozone, wildfire smoke and extreme hot and cold temperatures may increase the risks of acute kidney in

Chromium (Cr) compounds are usually toxins and exist abundantly in two different forms, Cr(VI) and Cr(III), in nature. Their contamination in any environment is a major problem. Many extreme environments including cold climate, warm climate, acidic environment, basic/alkaline environment, hypersaline environment, radiation, drought, high pressure, and anaerobic conditions have accumulated elevated Cr contamination. These harsh physicochemical conditions associated with Cr(VI) contamination damage biological systems in various ways. However, several unique microorganisms belonging to phylogenet

Background The definition of neuropathic pain has recently been changed by the International Association for the Study of Pain. This means that conditions such as fibromyalgia cannot, as sometimes discussed, be included in the neuropathic pain conditions. However, fibromyalgia and peripheral neuropathic pain share common clinical features such as spontaneous pain and hypersensitivity to external stimuli. Therefore, it is of interest to directly compare the conditions. Material and methods In this study we directly compared the pain modulation in neuropathic pain versus fibromyalgia by recordin

Frostbite injury is a debilitating cold injury encountered in extreme high-altitude and subzero environments, frequently resulting in persistent chronic pain even after tissue healing. Using our previously validated frostbite-induced chronic pain model, we further investigated the contribution of neuroimmune, excitatory mechanisms and evaluated the therapeutic efficacy of peripheral cannabinoid receptor activation. Frostbite produced significant mechanical allodynia, mechanical hyperalgesia, and cold hypersensitivity, along with increased spontaneous ongoing pain behaviors. Local peripheral ad

Chitin synthesis inhibitors (CSIs) are commonly used insecticides compromising cuticle formation and structure in arthropods. Arthropods rely on intact cuticles to maintain water balance and cellular homeostasis to survive in different weather conditions. We hypothesized that physiological impacts of CSIs may make arthropods more vulnerable to harsh environmental conditions, such as extreme heat, cold or drought. The aim of this study was to investigate if pre-exposure to teflubenzuron (a common CSI) would influence Folsomia candida's (Collembola: Isotomidae) sensitivity to natural stressors.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of cold exposure discontinuation on local cold tolerance of older retired female haenyeos in Korea. A total of 30 older women participated in this study: older retired haenyeos (89 ± 4 y in age, N = 10), active haenyeos (current divers) (75 ± 4 y, N = 10), and age-matched non-divers (75 ± 6 y, N = 10). Our criterion for local cold tolerance was cold-induced vasodilation (CIVD) of the finger. Active haenyeos showed greater local cold tolerance in terms of higher minimum temperature of the left finger during immersion and recovery t

Secondary cold agglutinin autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) occurs most commonly due to infectious causes like Mycoplasma pneumonia and, more rarely, Epstein-Barr virus(EBV). Here we present a case of a 69-year-old female presenting with generalized weakness, who was found to have cold agglutinin hemolytic anemia. She unfortunately experienced some of the most severe complications of the disease including encephalopathy, hypoxia, and dry necrosis of peripheral extremities. Further investigation revealed an EBV infection, the rarest infectious cause of cold AIHA. She was started on steroids, t

Extreme temperatures are emerging as major climate-sensitive drivers of chronic cardiovascular disease (CVD). Global warming has increased the frequency, duration, and intensity of heatwaves, while substantial cold-related risk persists, particularly in poorly insulated and socioeconomically vulnerable settings. Together, non-optimal temperatures account for millions of deaths annually, with a large and growing share attributable to CVD. In this narrative review, we synthesize epidemiological, mechanistic, and systems-level evidence linking heat and cold exposure to chronic cardiovascular outc

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is the leading Category C infectious disease affecting millions of children in China every year. In the context of global climate change, the understanding and quantification of the impact of weather factors on human health are particularly critical to the development and implementation of climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies. The aim of this study was to quantify the attributable burden of a combined bioclimatic indicator (apparent temperature) on HFMD and to identify temperature-specific sensitive populations. A total of 123,622 HFMD cases

Opioid receptors appear to modulate a variety of physiological and metabolic homeostatic responses to stressors such as exercise and thermally extreme environments. To more accurately determine the role of the naloxone (NAL) sensitive opioid receptor system during rest and exercise, subjects were subjected to concomitant environmental thermal stress. Fifteen untrained men rested or performed low intensity (60% VO2peak) or high intensity (80% VO2peak) exercise on a cycle ergometer for 60 min in an environmental chamber during cold (0 degrees C) hot (35 degrees C) air exposure while receiving an

Acrocyanosis is an uncommon condition characterized by symmetric coolness and violaceous discoloration of the hands and feet. The nose, ears, lips, and nipples are also often affected. The disease is temperature dependent and generally worsens with cold exposure. Acrocyanosis is often secondary to a variety of underlying causes. We present a very interesting case of a 44-year-old woman with almost lifelong idiopathic acrocyanosis. Differential diagnoses are discussed in this article.

Cold agglutinin disease (CAD) is extremely rare in children. We report an 8-year-old boy who presented with gangrene of right foot with hypertension and absent lower limb pulses. Blood peripheral smear evidence of autoagglutination and falsely elevated red blood cell indices were suggestive of CAD and on subsequent investigations he was found to have high titres of cold agglutinin antibodies. He also had evidence of pneumonia on chest X-ray and serology for mycoplasma was positive. Computed tomography angiography showed multifocal thrombotic occlusion in bilateral popliteal arteries. He was ef

UNLABELLED: Upper extremity musculoskeletal complaints and disorders are frequently reported among visual display units (VDU) workers. These complaints include cold forearms, hands or fingers.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this systematic review was to gain an insight into the relationship between objective and subjective temperature decrease and musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) in the upper extremity in a VDU work environment by (internal or external) cooling of the arm and hand. Two questions were formulated: (1) Is a VDU work environment (temperature between 15 and 25 degrees C) associated with te

BACKGROUND: Causalgia is a rare disease in civilian practice, and most reports regarding causalgia in the literature are from major extended wars. To increase awareness of this syndrome, our wartime experience with this disease is presented.
METHODS: The charts of patients with causalgia referred to two university hospitals for treatment from 1985 to 1989 were retrospectively studied. Characteristics of the cause, clinical manifestations, and the response to therapy were evaluated.
RESULTS: Among 1,564 patients with peripheral nerve injuries, there were 54 cases (3.4%) of causalgia. All of t

The activity of Cd-induced POD isozyme isolated from the surface of intact barley roots growing under some abiotic stress conditions (toxic metals: Al, Co, Cu, Hg; drought, NaCl, extreme temperatures: heat, cold) and compounds activating (2,4-D) or inhibiting (SHAM) POD activity as well as H(2)O(2) and H(2)O(2) scavenger (DTT) was characterized. Strong Cd concentration-dependent accumulation of one cationic POD isozyme was observed on PAGE, which correlated with Cd- and other stress induced root growth inhibition. This isoPOD is basic with isoelectric point about 9 and its localization is rest

One pattern of dysfunctional family interaction is described as a syndrome. Four case histories are presented in which different family members take polar positions on various continua. In one instance the continuum is oral communication, with garrulousness on one side and silence on the other. Another continuum is family responsibility, where one member of the family takes total responsibility and another takes almost none. The symbolic continuum is an electric blanket with hot at one extreme and cold at the other. In all cases, family therapy was performed by a pediatrician. Guidelines are d
