Retinoblastoma is the most common intraocular malignancy of infancy which frequently manifests with a white pupillary reflex. We report a case of delayed presentation of a child with retinoblastoma in his left eye because parents thought the change in iris colour in this eye was due to the innocent heterochromia irides that was previously diagnosed in his elder sibling. This late presentation necessitated enucleation of the affected eye followed by chemotherapy.

A 27-year-old man suffered simultaneous avulsion of the optic nerve and luxation of an intact globe in a motor vehicle accident. CT was not diagnostic of the nerve avulsion. The injury was addressed by emergent replacement of the globe within the orbit. The patient obtained psychological benefit by retaining the eye initially, but required subsequent enucleation for prolonged ocular inflammation. Initial repositioning of intact, luxated globes offers potential cosmetic and psychological benefits. If necessary, enucleation can be performed later.

Four years after unexplained left eye visual loss and 15 days after surgical procedure on the other eye, a 93-year-old female developed a pigmented left conjunctival lesion. Ultrasound examination demonstrated this lesion to be in fact an extraocular extension of uveal melanoma. The patient was treated by external radiotherapy after expanded enucleation.

A case of 'black cornea', occurring 6 years after commencement of a therapy with adrenaline derivative eye drops, is reported. Enucleation was performed because of suspected malignant melanoma. The eye was sent to our laboratory for histopathological examination. The clinical and histopathological findings are described, and the pathogenesis of the 'black cornea' is discussed.

PURPOSE/METHODS: We studied a rare initial manifestation of myelodysplastic syndrome in an 82-year-old woman who had acute secondary glaucoma in the right eye and mature cataracts in both eyes.
RESULTS/CONCLUSION: Therapy with glaucoma control medications and cataract extraction in the right eye resulted in expulsive hemorrhage and subsequent enucleation of the right eye. After cataract extraction, examination of the left eye disclosed a central serous retinal detachment and hemorrhage. Histopathologic analysis of the right eye demonstrated myelocytic and lymphocytic infiltration.

Streptococcus pyogenes is a rare pathogen that causes endogenous endophthalmitis (EE). A healthy 58-year-old woman was diagnosed with EE secondary to septic arthritis caused by S. pyogenes. The level of ascorbate in the aqueous humor and surrounding intraocular structures in enucleated arterially perfused rabbit eye was investigated. The enucleated eye preparation was shown to be capable of secreting ascorbate from the perfusate into the aqueous humor. Ascorbate in the iris, ciliary body and cornea was released into the aqueous humor when the eye was perfused with ascorbate-free solution.
