Production and transcriptional regulation of proanthocyanidin biosynthesis in forage legumes.

Proanthocyanidins (PA), also known as condensed tannins, contribute to important forage legumes traits including disease resistance and forage quality. PA in forage plants has both positive and negative effects on feed digestibility and animal performance. The analytical methods and their applicability in measuring the contents of PA in forage plants are essential to studies on their nutritional effects. In spite of important breakthroughs in our understanding of the PA biosynthesis, important questions still remain to be answered such as the PA polymerization and transport. Recent advances in

Molecular insights into bacteroid development during Rhizobium-legume symbiosis.

Rhizobial soil bacteria can form a symbiosis with legumes in which the bacteria fix atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia that can be utilized by the host. The plant, in turn, supplies the rhizobia with a carbon source. After infecting the host cell, the bacteria differentiate into a distinct bacteroid form, which is able to fix nitrogen. The bacterial BacA protein is essential for bacteroid differentiation in legumes producing nodule-specific cysteine-rich peptides (NCRs), which induce the terminal differentiation of the bacteria into bacteroids. NCRs are antimicrobial peptides similar to mammali

Mung bean lipoxygenase in the production of a C6-aldehyde. Natural green-note flavor generation via biotransformation.

Mung bean was investigated as a novel source of lipoxygenase in the natural production of the green-note aroma compound hexanal. Lipoxygenase extracted from mung bean catalyzed the oxidative reaction of linoleic acid, after which the intermediate hydroperoxide compound was split via green bell pepper hydroperoxide lyase to produce hexanal. In comparison to soybean lipoxygenase, mung bean lipoxygenase was found to be a good substitute as it produced 15.4 mM (76% yield) hexanal while soybean gave 60% yield. The mung bean pH profile comprised a wide peak (optimum pH 6.5) representing lipoxygenase

EI/MS fragmentation of abieta-8,11,13-triene diterpenoid derivatives as a tool to identify swartziarboreols in Swartzia extracts.

A systematic molecular fragmentation pathway (SMFP) was designed as an identifier to detect swartziarboreols (abieta-8,11,13-triene diterpenoid derivatives) in Swartzia extracts. The SMFP was rationalised through the interpretation of the EI/MS of swartziarboreols isolated from S. arborescens and S. langasdorffii and by analogy with the fragmentations observed for previously isolated compounds. Two pairs of swartziarboreol epimers were identified by GC-MS in an extract of S. langsdorffii using SMFP. Acetylation and methylation of the dichloromethane extract furnished, respectively, 3 and 4, wh

Plant Tissue Structure and Degree of Milling as Determinants of Starch Digestibility and Postprandial Metabolic Responses to Cereal and Legume Products.

Background: Growing evidence suggests that the structural integrity of plant tissues is an important determinant of starch digestibility and postprandial metabolic responses in cereals, legumes, and starch-rich foods. This narrative review evaluates the influence of botanical tissue architecture and the degree of milling on physicochemical properties, product quality, starch digestibility, and metabolic responses in cereal- and legume-based foods. Methods: The evidence was critically synthesized from studies on physicochemical characterization, in vitro starch digestibility, acute postprandial

Bio-based phenolic foams from Anadenanthera peregrina tannins: Synthesis, structure and performance.

Tannin-based foams are natural-origin porous materials that offer promising alternatives to flammable synthetic foams due to their fire resistance and thermal insulation properties; however, their brittleness and relatively low mechanical resistance present challenges, necessitating improvements to these properties. This work aimed to investigate four types of tannin-based foams (ST, TT, TB, and TTB) prepared without formaldehyde, by using Anadenanthera peregrina tannins (ST) and the incorporation of polysorbate Tween 80 as a surfactant (TT), bamboo fibers as filler reinforcement (TB), and the

Physical dormancy-break by predispersal insect seed predators and a discussion of insect x seed (bitrophic) interactions on population growth of legumes.

Physical dormancy can be broken in nature by insect seed predation. Bruchid beetles and various other insects are predispersal seed predators on physically-dormancy (PY) seeds, especially those of legumes (Fabaceae). Although many of the predated seeds are nonviable, some of them may be viable, nondormant and germinable. Our primary aim was to review the literature on the effect of predispersal seed predation on PY-break/germination in this bitrophic system. We found information on the bitrophic interactions between insects and seeds of 46 plant species in 43 "case studies". Seeds in 30 case s…

The antioxidant effects of hedysarum polybotrys polysaccharide in extending lifespan and ameliorating aging-related diseases in Drosophila melanogaster.

Hedysarum polybotrys polysaccharide (HPS) is one of the main active ingredients of Hedysarum with many health-beneficial properties, including antioxidant property, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tumor. However, the effect of HPS on anti-aging is still unclear. This study was to explore the protective function of HPS on aging and age-related diseases using Drosophila melanogaster. The results demonstrated that HPS supplementation promoted hatchability and prolonged lifespan by enhancing the antioxidative capacity. Administraction of HPS ameliorated age-related symptoms such as i

Relationship between Protein Digestibility and the Proteolysis of Legume Proteins during Seed Germination.

Legume seed protein is an important source of nutrition, but generally it is less digestible than animal protein. Poor protein digestibility in legume seeds and seedlings may partly reflect defenses against herbivores. Protein changes during germination typically increase proteolysis and digestibility, by lowering the levels of anti-nutrient protease inhibitors, activating proteases, and breaking down storage proteins (including allergens). Germinating legume sprouts also show striking increases in free amino acids (especially asparagine), but their roles in host defense or other processes are

Characterization and response of two potato receptor-like kinases to cyst nematode infection.

Plant-parasitic cyst nematodes (Heterodera and Globodera spp.) secrete CLAVATA3/EMBRYO SURROUNDING REGION-RELATED (CLE) effector proteins, which act as ligand mimics of plant CLE peptides to promote successful nematode infection. Previous studies of the Arabidopsis-beet cyst nematode (BCN; H. schachtii) pathosystem showed that Arabidopsis CLE receptors including CLAVATA1 (CLV1), CLV2, and RECEPTOR-LIKE PROTEIN KINASE 2 (RPK2) are required for BCN CLE signaling. Studies further revealed that nematode CLE signaling through GmCLV2 and StCLV2, an Arabidopsis CLV2 orthologue from soybean (Glycines

Effects of nZnS vs. nZnO and ZnCl2 on mungbean [Vigna radiata (L.) R. Wilczek] plant and Bradyrhizobium symbiosis: A life cycle study.

Scarce of knowledge of using Zinc (Zn) nanoparticles (NPs) to augment plant growth, Zn availability to plants and its potential toxicity warrants more NPs-plant life cycle studies. The main objectives of this study were to compare nano zinc sulphide (nZnS) with nano zinc oxide (nZnO) and ionic Zn i.e., ZnCl2, as a source of Zn, as well as to establish physiological impact of NPs on growth, yield and symbiosis of mungbean [Vigna radiata (L.) R. Wilczek] plants at different concentrations (0, 0.01, 0.1, 1 and 10 mg kg-1 of soil). In this study, mungbean plants were grown for 60 days (life cycle

Health Beneficial Bioactivities of Faba Bean Gastrointestinal (In Vitro) Digestate in Comparison to Soybean and Pea.

Faba beans are a promising emerging plant-based protein source to be used as a quality alternative to peas and soy. In this study, the potential health beneficial activities of three Canadian faba bean varieties (Fabelle, Malik and Snowbird) were investigated after in vitro gastrointestinal digestion and compared to two commonly used legumes (peas and soy). The results revealed that the faba beans had a higher antioxidant activity than peas when assessed with the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and the 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) assays, except for the Fab
