Primary hemifacial spasm (pHFS) is due to a benign compression of the facial motor nerve by an offending vessel, leading to increased nerve excitability. Facial nerve hyperexcitability presents two different aspects. First, there is a spontaneous and ectopic generation of action potentials on the incriminated nerve and then this ectopic impulse can propagate and spread "laterally" from one facial nerve branch to another. This results in spontaneous and synkinetic spasms affecting one hemiface. Although the increase in excitability certainly concerns the nucleus of the facial motor nerve in the

We have recently shown in rat that daily manual stimulation (MS) of vibrissal muscles promotes recovery of whisking and reduces polyinnervation of muscle fibers following repair of the facial nerve (facial-facial anastomosis, FFA). Here, we examined whether these positive effects were: (1) correlated with alterations of the afferent connections of regenerated facial motoneurons, and (2) whether they were achieved by enhanced sensory input through the intact trigeminal nerve. First, we quantified the extent of total synaptic input to motoneurons in the facial nucleus using synaptophysin immunoc…

Microglial activation in response to pathological stimuli is characterized by increased migratory activity and potential cytotoxic action on injured neurons during later stages of neurodegeneration. The initial molecular changes in the CNS favoring neuronofugal migration of microglia remain, however, largely unknown. We report that the extracellular matrix protein tenascin-R (TN-R) present in the intact CNS is antiadhesive for activated microglia, and its downregulation after facial nerve axotomy may account for the loss of motoneuron protection and subsequent neurodegeneration. Studies on the

We reported a 53-year-old man with the right trigeminal herpes zoster with preceding neuralgia (preherpetic neuralgia) in the right upper cervical nerve area. He developed dysesthesia and scapular pain in the right second cervical nerve area. 5 days later, herpes zoster emerged in the area of the right maxillary division of trigeminal nerve. Furthermore, he developed paralysis on the right facial muscle on the 12th day after the onset of scapular pain. Neurological examination revealed decrease in superficial sensation accompanied by pain and dysesthesia in the areas innervated by the right ma

In 1987 to 1997, open ultrasonic vertical trigeminal nucleotractotomy was performed in 46 patients with drug-resistant facial pain syndromes. There were 29 patients with deafferentation pain, 14 with migraine-induced neuralgia and 3 with trigeminal neuralgia due to multiple sclerosis. The operation included unilateral suboccipital craniotomy, C1 hemilaminectomy and vertical destruction of the trigeminal nucleus and descending tract with an ultrasonic microsurgical needle. The rostral limit of trigeminal nucleotractotomy depended on the site of facial pain. In the early postoperative period, th

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether somatostatin (SST) could be a cortico-brainstem neurotransmitter involved in producing the headache of migraine.
BACKGROUND: There is evidence to support the idea that a cortico-brainstem-trigeminal nucleus neuraxis might be responsible for producing migraine headache; we have suggested that SST may be one of the neurotransmitters involved.
METHODS: Rats were anesthetised and prepared for recording neurons in either the periaqueductal gray matter (PAG) or nucleus raphe magnus (NRM), as well as the trigeminal nucleus caudalis (TNC). The dura mater and facial sk

In the catfish Heteropneustes fossilis, three vasotocin (VT) receptor subtype genes, v1a1, v1a2, and v2a, were cloned and characterized previously. In the present study, using RNA probes, we localized the distribution of the gene transcripts in the brain-pituitary-gonadal (BPG) axis. The V1a-type receptor, v1a1 and v1a2, genes showed similar and overlapping distribution in the brain. The gene paralogs are distributed in the radial glial cells (RGCs) of the telencephalic ventricle and around the third ventricle in the hypothalamus and thalamus, olfactory tract, nucleus preopticus, nucleus later

Facial nerve injury (FNI) is common, yet therapeutic outcomes are often suboptimal due to axonal degeneration, neuronal death, and persisten … neuroinflammatory processes. In vivo, a murine FNI model was established. Quantitative analysis of facial nucleus neurons was performed using TUNEL and Nissl staining, combined with cerebral blood oxygen level-dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging (BOLD-fMRI). FNI was found to activate the cGAS-STING signalling pathway. Inhibition of this pathway atte …

A case is reported in which a Nucleus 22 channel cochlear implant was inserted into the basal turn of the cochlea of a patient with advanced otosclerosis. It then passed out of the anterior end of the basal turn into an otospongiotic cavity related to the cochlea. Seven electrodes were located in the basal turn and it was possible to map them sufficiently well for the patient to derive considerable benefit from the implant. The problem of implant induced facial nerve stimulation in otospongiosis is also discussed.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Fahr's disease, or bilateral striopallidodentate calcinosis, is a rare autosomal dominant neurological disorder characterized by bilateral symmetrical calcifications in the basal ganglia, thalamus, hippocampus, dentate nucleus, cerebral cortex, and cerebellar subcortical white matter. Typically presenting with cognitive, psychiatric, and extrapyramidal symptoms in middle age, its presentation as an acute ischemic stroke is exceedingly rare. This case report presents this unusual occurrence.

The profile of integration in a sample of 183 interneurones localized in the subnucleus-gamma of the oral nucleus of the spinal trigeminal tract (NVspo-gamma) has been analyzed. 134 neurones were tested for inputs from primary afferents of the trigeminal, facial and cervical nerves as well as for inputs from the midbrain and from the cervical spinal cord. The remaining 49 neurones were tested for inputs from the primary afferents and for descending convergence from defined sites within the oro-facial primary projections of the cerebral cortex. It was found that the interneurones, mainly record

The cholinergic structures in the cranial nerve motor nuclei and lamina IX of the cervical spinal cord of the rat were examined immunohistochemically with a monoclonal antibody to choline acetyltransferase (ChAT). The brainstem motor nuclei were classified into 3 groups according to the way of distribution of ChAT-positive structures in the neuropil of the nucleus. 1. The oculomotor, trochlear and abducent nuclei contained moderately ChAT-positive perikarya and dendrites. A small number of ChAT-positive bouton-like structures were found in the neuropil, but they were not in contact with ChAT-p

Emerging evidence indicates that neuroimmunological changes in the brain can modify intrinsic brain processes that are involved in regulating neuroplasticity. Increasing evidence suggests that in some forms of motor neuron injury, many neurons do not die, but reside in an atrophic state for an extended period of time. In mice, facial motor neurons in the brain undergo a protracted period of degeneration or atrophy following resection of their peripheral axons. Reinjuring the proximal nerve stump of the chronically resected facial nerve stimulates a robust reversal of motor neuron atrophy which

We tested the idea that migraine triggers cause cortical activation, which disinhibits craniovascular sensation through the nucleus raphe magnus (NRM) and thus produces the headache of migraine. Stimulation of the dura mater and facial skin activated neurons in the NRM and the trigeminal nucleus. Stimulation of the NRM caused suppression of responses of trigeminal neurons to electrical and mechanical stimulation of the dura mater, but not of the skin. This suppression was antagonized by the iontophoretic application of the 5-HT(1B/1D) receptor antagonist GR127935 to trigeminal neurons. Migrain

BACKGROUND: Interruption of mature axons activates a cascade of events in neuronal cell bodies which leads to various outcomes from function … nstrated a strong up-regulation of SCD at mRNA and protein level in regenerating neurons of the rat facial nucleus whereas non-regenerating Clarke's and Red nucleus neurons did not show an induction of this gene.
CONCLUSION: This differential expression points to a functionally significant role for the SCD-1 in the process of regeneration.
