Periorbital Necrotizing Fasciitis: Case Presentation.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is an aggressive and potentially life-threatening infection of the superficial fascia and surrounding skin, fat, fascia, muscle, and other soft tissue structures. Here, we outline the rare case of a 26-year-old man with a periorbital Streptococcus pyogenes A NF infection. Our case report underscores a unique instance of periorbital NF, distinctively presenting without any predisposing risk factors, shedding light on its presentation, treatment, and pathophysiology.

A necrotising fasciitis: case report.

Necrotizing fasciitis is one of the most common soft tissue infections, with a high risk of major amputation and a mortality ranging from 6 to 33% which has not changed in the past 20 years. Early surgical resection of necrotic tissue plays a key role in determining the prognosis. Nawijn et al. identified an optimal 6 hours window from presentation to surgery. Symptoms of necrotizing fasciitis mimic those of common skin infections, such as erysipelas and cellulitis, making rapid surgical management difficult. In this context, the aid of point-of-care-ultrasound is a valuable tool for early dia

Breast rescue after necrotizing fasciitis.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a dangerous and rapidly spreading infection of soft tissue involving skin, subcutaneous tissue and fascia; muscles can be concerned but often omitted. It's considered as emergency due to its fulminant nature. The necrotizing fasciitis of the breast is exceptional. Management is based on surgical debridement and, in the case of breast, mastectomy in most cases is inevitable. We describe a case-report of breast necrotizing fasciitis with prompt management and with satisfactory cosmetic result owing to dermal autograft.

The enigmatic fascia: eosinophilic fasciitis.

This case report highlights the potentially underrecognized subtype of unilateral eosinophilic fasciitis (EF) in a 28 year old man. With fewer than 300 reported encounters to date, EF is a rare disease that eludes clinicians by presenting as a scleroderma like syndrome. As EF remains a clinical diagnosis, biopsy results may be nonspecific, and the disease can easily be misdiagnosed (or missed entirely) if a full thickness biopsy is not reviewed by a dermatopathologist. The authors also emphasize the importance of internationally accepted diagnostic criteria, of which at least two different set

Photobiomodulation to Treat Necrotizing Fasciitis.

The spread of odontogenic infections associated with comorbidities, such as diabetes mellitus, can result in a potentially lethal complication, with rapid necrosis of the superficial fascia, necrotizing fasciitis. In this case report, a female patient, 52 years old, fasting blood glucose of 303 mg/dL with necrotizing fasciitis associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus in the left cervical-thoracic region. She was treated with antibiotics, cervicotomy, abscess drainage, and underwent 10 photobiomodulation sessions with 2 weekly applications of the red wavelength laser to correct tissue loss in t

Necrotizing fasciitis associated with malignancy.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rare soft-tissue condition with a high mortality rate even with treatment. Diagnosis is challenging due to an absence of specific symptoms at the early stages of clinical presentation. NF is typically associated with traumatic injuries, superficial skin breakdown, and surgical procedures. Diabetes mellitus and immunosuppression also increase the risk of developing NF. NF predominantly occurs in the lower extremities, the peritoneum, and the perineum. Treatments include antimicrobials, supportive care, and surgical source control. It is important for clinicians t

[Necrotizing fasciitis-a surgical emergency].

Necrotizing fasciitis is a fulminant and potentially life-threatening infection of the skin and soft tissue. It is usually caused by a combination of different bacteria and is often due to assumed minor trauma. Clinically, only relatively insignificant skin changes are initially present, such as blistering or erythema. They are often accompanied by excessive pain. In the further course, the massive systemic reaction becomes predominant. The diagnosis of necrotizing fasciitis is primarily clinical, which can be supported by laboratory parameters (LRINEC score) and computed tomography imaging. D

Necrotizing fasciitis: A comprehensive review.

Necrotizing soft-tissue infections (NSTIs) are rare but rapidly progressive, life-threatening bacterial infections with high morbidity and mortality. NSTIs include necrotizing forms of fasciitis, myositis, and cellulitis. This article focuses on necrotizing fasciitis (NF) and discusses NF classifications, clinical features, diagnostic approaches, evidence-based treatments, and nursing interventions.

Case 272: Decubital Ischemic Fasciitis.

HistoryA 92-year-old bedridden woman presented to the emergency department from an assisted living facility with fever, cough, and swelling over the right lateral hip. She had baseline dementia and frailty and had been bedridden for 4 years. She did not have any recent falls or history of trauma at the site of swelling. She had a history of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma that had been diagnosed and treated 7 years ago, and thoracoabdominal CT at last follow-up 3 years ago did not show any recurrence. Physical examination findings were unremarkable except for a painful hard and fixed mass measur

Facial necrotising fasciitis following rhytidectomy.

Rhytidectomy is the most common surgical procedure used to rejuvenate the appearance of the aging face and neck. Necrotising fasciitis is a rapidly progressing, life-threatening, bacterial infection of the skin, the subcutaneous tissue, and the fascia. We report a case of necrotising fasciitis of the face caused by a group A streptococcal infection after rhytidectomy on a healthy female patient. An abscess on her hand that had been caused by an infection related to a venous catheter had provided a potential entry for the pathogen, and treatment combined both surgical debridement and antibiotic

[Necrotizing fasciitis - a clinical diagnosis].

Necrotizing fasciitis is a life-threatening clinical pattern, which may lead to multi-organ failure and death with delayed diagnosis or inadequate treatment. We report on a 68-year old patient who developed necrotizing fasciitis of the right elbow with multiorgan failure and long-term ventilation after an accidental and minor injury. The patient survived as a result of an early diagnosis and surgical intervention. In this case report we want to clarify the diagnosis and treatment of necrotizing fasciitis and give an overview of the recent literature on the topic.

Pyoderma Gangrenosum Simulating Necrotizing Fasciitis.

Pyoderma gangrenosum received this name due to the notion that this disease was related to infections caused by bacteria in the genus Streptococcus. In contrast to this initial assumption, today the disease is thought to have an autoimmune origin. Necrotizing fasciitis was first mentioned around the fifth century AD, being referred to as a complication of erysipelas. It is a disease characterized by severe, rapidly progressing soft tissue infection, which causes necrosis of the subcutaneous tissue and the fascia. On the third day of hospitalization after antecubital venipuncture, a 59-year-old

Periocular necrotizing fasciitis causing blindness.

IMPORTANCE: Periocular necrotizing fasciitis is a rare but potentially devastating disease, accompanied by high rates of morbidity and mortality. OBSERVATIONS: We report 5 cases of periocular necrotizing fasciitis resulting in severe vision loss, 3 of which required exenteration to contain the disease and only 1 of which recovered vision. Three cases were caused by group A streptococcus; 1, by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus; and 1, by Streptococcus anginosus constellatus. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Providers should maintain a high clinical suspicion for necrotizing fasciitis and

Early diagnosis of necrotizing fasciitis.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis is a rapidly progressing skin infection characterized by necrosis of the fascia and subcutaneous tissue, accompanied by severe systemic toxicity. The objective of this systematic review was to identify clinical features and investigations that will aid early diagnosis. METHODS: A systematic literature search of PubMed was undertaken using the keywords 'necrotising fasciitis', 'necrotising skin infection', 'diagnosis' and 'outcome'. Case series of 50 or more subjects with information on symptoms and signs at initial presentation, investigations and clinical ou

Necrotizing fasciitis after spinal anesthesia.

Regional anesthesia is the preferred technique for Cesarean delivery. Strict aseptic precautions should be taken; otherwise, infectious complications including abscess formation, meningitis and necrotizing fasciitis may result. We report a case of a 26-year-old post-partum female who presented with necrosis of the skin of back following spinal anesthesia, which was administered for Cesarean delivery 5 days prior at a private nursing home. On presentation, she was drowsy, appeared dehydrated and febrile. Examination of her back revealed necrosis of skin extending from just below the scapula to
