The danger in deception: oedipal betrayal and the assault on truth.

Certain potential precursors to heterosexual women's experience of partner infidelity are explored as these dynamics unfold within the oedipal crisis-the "betrayal" by the oedipal objects. As each child moves into the oedipal phase, he or she comes to recognize not only desire for the mother, but the mother's desire for the father. A doubling of this experience of "deception," encountered first in relation to the mother, and then repeated with the father, may be especially pronounced for a girl, as she is likely to inhabit more fully her bisexual potential in negotiating the expected shift of

The impact of SafeCare® Dads to Kids program on father maltreatment risk and involvement: Outcomes and lessons learned from an efficacy trial.

Child Maltreatment (CM) is a public health problem, and experts recommend parent training programs as a prevention method. Few programs target fathers, even though male caregivers are involved as perpetrators in approximately 45% of substantiated CM cases. This study examines the efficacy of an adapted version of SafeCare (Dad2K) with marginalized fathers. Participants include a convenience sample of fathers with children ages 2-5 years. Fathers (n=99) were randomized to an 1) intervention group (SafeCare Dad2K) or to a 2) comparison group (receiving parenting information in the mail). Quantit

Parents' Perspectives of Cleft Lip and/or Palate Services: A Qualitative Interview.

The study aimed to explore in depth the perspectives of parents about their child's cleft services. Purposive and theoretical sampling produced a diverse sample of mothers and fathers with children aged 20 weeks to 21 years. Parents were recruited from a specialist cleft center in the U.K. Qualitative, in-depth, face-to-face interviews were carried out with 35 parents. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using grounded theory to identify salient data categories. Findings revealed that parents' positive views about services rested on their perceptions of cleft-care practit

Fathers' caregiving time before and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic contributed to greater day-to-day time spent together for many families. Some research in Euro-American settings indicated that fathers spent more time caring for their children during the pandemic than previously, with the potential for lasting effects on fathers' caregiving. However, there are few longitudinal studies with post-pandemic paternal care data and analyses from non-Euro-American contexts. We drew on a large sample of men (N = 649; Obs. = 1286) enrolled in a longitudinal study in the Philippines with waves of data collection prior to the pandemic in 2009 (wav

Hormonal changes in first-time human fathers in relation to paternal investment.

In many biparental species, males experience hormonal changes across the transition to fatherhood that prepare them for their new caregiving role. In humans, cross-sectional comparisons have revealed hormonal differences between fathers and nonfathers, however it is not clear when hormone levels change in new fathers, how such changes relate to paternal involvement and attachment, or even whether men with particular hormonal profiles are more likely to become fathers. In this longitudinal study, we aimed to elucidate the trajectory of hormonal changes in new fathers with greater temporal resol

"I was doubtful of being the true father of the preterm baby": factors affecting fathers' involvement in the care of preterm babies admitted in the neonatal unit at Kawempe National Referral Hospital, Uganda. a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Fathers' involvement in the care of preterm babies has been associated with good health outcomes for the mother and the baby. However, fathers' involvement in the Neonatal Unit (NU) in Uganda remains sub-optimal and factors influencing this are not well understood. Therefore, this study aimed at exploring the factors affecting fathers' involvement in the care of preterm babies admitted in neonatal unit at Kawempe National Referral Hospital (KNRH). METHODS: This was a qualitative exploratory study conducted in the NU at Kawempe National Referral Hospital between April and July 2023

Elevating Black fathers' experiences in the National Fatherhood Initiative: Strengths and areas for improvement of 24/7 Dad® curriculum and case management services.

The Healthy Marriage and Responsible Fatherhood grant program is one of the most robust mechanisms supporting fatherhood programming in the United States, with the gold standard of care including fatherhood curriculum (e.g., 24/7 Dad®) and case management services. Despite the fact that fatherhood in the United States is not a monolith and Black fathers make up over 40% of those served through Responsible Fatherhood (RF) program, little research explicitly centers the lived experiences of low-income Black fathers. The current study used focus groups with fathers (n = 23) and staff (n = 8) enro

The family's functioning with chronic illness in the mother: the spouse's perspective.

While previous research has studied the impact of chronic illness on the patient or spouse, the impact on the marriage, the child, the parent-child relationship, and the family's functioning have been relatively ignored. To date ther is no known study of the impact of a mother's chronic illness on the family. The purpose of the current exploratory study was to test a set of interrelated hypotheses about family functioning with the mother's chronic illness from the spouse's perspective based on a family systems perspective. Data were obtained from standardized questionnaires from 48 fathers wit

Marital psychological and physical aggression and children's mental and physical health: direct, mediated, and moderated effects.

Relations between marital aggression (psychological and physical) and children's health were examined. Children's emotional insecurity was assessed as a mediator of these relations, with distinctions made between marital aggression against mothers and fathers and ethnicity (African American or European American), socioeconomic status, and child gender examined as moderators of effects. Participants were 251 community-recruited families, with multiple reporters of each construct. Aggression against either parent yielded similar effects for children. Children's emotional insecurity mediated the

Knowledge Transmission and Skills Building Relating to Child Sexual Abuse in China.

Parents play a key role in child CSA prevention, but the mechanisms underlying the intergenerational knowledge transmission are not fully understood. This study explores the role of two parenting practices - parent-child communication and parent's protective behavior - as mediating factors in the relation between parents' knowledge and their children's knowledge and skills. Four hundred and ten dyads of early adolescents and their mother or father from rural China participated in the study. Parents were surveyed on their knowledge, protective behaviors, and parent-child communication regarding

The relationship between a less gender-stereotypical parenthood and alcohol-related care and death: a registry study of Swedish mothers and fathers.

BACKGROUND: In general men tend to drink more alcohol and experience more alcohol-related sickness, injuries and mortality than women. In this paper, the overall hypothesis was that increased gender similarity in the division of parental duties would lead to convergence in alcohol-related harm. The aim was to analyse whether the risk of alcohol harm differs between parents who fit a gender-stereotypical versus those with a less gender-stereotypical division of childcare and paid work. METHODS: The study sample was a retrospective registry-based cohort study of all Swedish couples who had thei

[Parenting and children's aggression: are there differences in the influence of the father and the mother?].

Child rearing provides messages and rules that mediate the children's personality. These messages have a positive or negative influence on their behaviour. The objective of this empirical study was to analyse the relationship between physical and verbal aggression of sons and daughters and parenting style practiced by the father and the mother. The sample consisted of 2,788 students, aged 10 to 15 years, studying either the third cycle of Primary Education (44%) or the first cycle of Secondary Education (56%). Of them, 1,412 were boys (50.6%) and 1,375 were girls (49.3%). The results show that

Parents' Spontaneous Attributions about their Problem Child: Associations with Parental Mental Health and Child Conduct Problems.

Parents' attributions about their child's personality and behaviour are known to predict the quality of parent-child interactions and outcomes for the child, including those from parenting interventions. Nothing is known, however, about the quantity and quality of attributions parents use during free speech about their children referred for treatment of behavioural and emotional problems. We tested hypotheses about the types of attributions and associations among parental attributions, parental psychopathology and child conduct problems, using 504 five-minute speech samples (FMSS) coded using

Callous-unemotional traits in children and mechanisms of impaired eye contact during expressions of love: a treatment target?

BACKGROUND: We previously hypothesised that the early development of psychopathy is associated with a failure to attend to the eyes of attachment figures, and we have presented preliminary data from a parent-child 'love' scenario in support of this. Here, we confirm the association in a larger sample and test mechanisms of impaired eye contact during expressions of love in control and behaviourally disturbed children. METHODS: Oppositional defiant disorder children, assessed for callous-unemotional (CU) traits, and controls, were observed in a brief interaction task where the mother was asked

[Analysis of clinical features and FKTN gene variant in a child with congenital muscular dystrophy].

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the clinical features and genetic basis for a child featuring elevated creatine kinase (CK). METHODS: Next-generation sequencing (muscular dystrophy related gene panel) was carried out for the proband. Candidate variants were verified by Sanger sequencing of the child and his parents. RESULTS: The child was found to harbor compound heterozygous variants of the FKTN gene, including a missense c.536G>C (p.R179T) variant from his father and a non-frameshift c.1299_1301delGTG (p.W434del) variant from his mother. Both variants were predicted to be pathogenic. CONCLUSION: Th

Cognitive abuse within the incestuous family as a factor in the development of dissociative identity disorder.

The polarized nature of the ongoing controversies surrounding the genesis and validity of dissociative identity disorder pit advocates who see and work with dissociative identity disorder sufferers against skeptics who claim it to be an artificial iatrogenically produced phenomenon. This paper suggests that such a dichotomy is unwarranted and that, in fact, both sides of the argument have merit. A short description of the controversy that rages among professionals is followed by a personal-experiential review of the development of dissociative identities in the author. Using sociocognitive con

Fathers keep out!

When the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge had their baby, the new father was with his wife and baby until they left the hospital. No suggestion that he should be pushed out at this very sensitive time. Does this mean that to be given the opportunity to bond with his baby, a father must either be royal or rich? This article examines the policy of sending fathers away from their newly born baby and partner, especially when they are very young or vulnerable. The suggestion is that 24 hour visiting should apply to fathers, thus circumventing the problems with providing accommodation for them.

Anorexia, masochism, self-mutilation, and autoerotism: the spider mother.

In summary, both self-mutilators and eating-disordered individuals come from dysfunctional homes with a very controlling mother and usually absent father. They often have a history of trauma. They are depressed and obsessive, attached to their mothers, who discourage attempts at emancipation. The symptoms serve the purpose of keeping them as little girls with negative feelings toward menstruation, sexual maturity, development, and femininity in general. These symptoms comprise self-destructive behavior in the service of removing sexual thoughts, temptation, and activities. Favazza (1987) inclu

Problem behavior, parental stress and enuresis.

PURPOSE: We determined maternal and paternal ratings of problem behavior in 5 to 13-year-old children with (non)monosymptomatic enuresis and investigated parental stress and the association between parental ratings of child behavior and parental stress. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We compared problem behavior in 78 children with (non)monosymptomatic enuresis vs that in 110 without enuresis using the Child Behavior Checklist and the Disruptive Behavior Disorders Rating Scale. Parental stress was measured using the Parenting Stress Index. RESULTS: Maternal results replicated previous findings of si

Risk factors for homelessness: a study of families of origin.

OBJECTIVE: This study's objective was to test the hypothesis that there are health issues and other factors in families of origin that have an association with, and may be risk factors for, homelessness. METHODS: This case control study identified risk factors in a group of homeless patients at a health clinic for the homeless. Two comparison groups from an academic family practice center were included. One comparison group was county indigent patients, and the other was patients who had health insurance. RESULTS: Significant differences in families of origin among these three groups were id
