Dietary omega 3 fatty acids from menhaden oil were incorporated into membrane phospholipids of submandibular salivary glands (SMSG). Eicosapentaenoic (20:5), docosapentaenoic (22:5) and docosahexaenoic (22:6) acids constituted about 20 per cent of the total fatty acids in phospholipids, phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine fractions of the SMSG plasma membranes of rats fed for 6 weeks a diet containing 10 per cent menhaden oil. The changes in fatty-acid composition of the membrane phospholipids were accompanied by higher adenylate-cyclase activity in the SMSG membranes of rats fed

Modern western diets have been associated with a reduced proportion of dietary omega-3 fatty acids leading to decreased levels of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) in the brain. Low DHA content has been associated with altered development of visual acuity in infants and also with an altered time course of synapse elimination and plasticity in subcortical visual nuclei in rodents. Microglia has an active role in normal developmental processes such as circuitry refinement and plasticity, and its activation status can be modulated by omega-3 (ω3) and omega-6 (ω6) essential fatty acids. Emerging evidence indicates that obesity, even in the absence of diabetes, contributes significantly to the development and progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Glomerular hyperfiltration/hypertrophy in response to the increased metabolic needs of obesity are postulated to lead to the development of glomerulosclerosis (GS) in a manner analogous to that in reduced renal mass states. Nevertheless, the individual risk for developing GS with obesity is very low. It is proposed that glomerular hyperfiltration/hypertrophy are per se not pathogenic in the absence of an enhanced glomerular blo

BACKGROUND: The long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) have beneficial effects in depression, and these effects may be mediated via changes in functional brain connectivity. However, little is known about these effects in those with subthreshold depression.
METHODS: 15 Participants aged 18-29 years with Patient Health Questionnaire-8 (PHQ-8) scores ≥ 4 and Generalised Anxiety Disorder Assessment-7 (GAD-7) scores ≥ 5, underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. Whole-brain, seed-based connectivity ana

Treatment of rats with 25 mg/kg/day of the neuroleptic drug chlorpromazine for periods of 7, 28 or 90 days causes a slow accumulation of lipid in large droplets in centrilobular hepatocytes. There is little or no damage to hepatocytes as assessed by changes in glucose-6-phosphatase activity and by electron microscopy. Furthermore there is no indication of a change in peroxisomal beta-oxidation of fatty acids or in microsomal omega-oxidation of fatty acids. It is, therefore, clear that lipid accumulation in the liver does not automatically induce peroxisomal and microsomal fatty acid oxidising

Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL; Hermetia illucens) oil and flaxseed oil provide contrasting fatty acid profiles and may serve as alternative lipid feed materials in ruminant nutrition. This study assessed low-α-linolenic/high-linoleic flaxseed oil, BSFL oil, and their blends using an in vitro rumen fermentation screening with pooled bovine rumen inoculum and a randomized prepartum feeding trial in 32 twin- or triplet-bearing Olkuska ewes. In vitro, the single oils and a 1:1 blend were evaluated at two inclusion levels; total VFA concentration was unchanged, whereas propionate proportion, the a

Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) including omega-3 and omega-6 are obtained from diet and can be measured objectively in plasma or red blood cells (RBCs) membrane biomarkers, representing different dietary exposure windows. In vivo conversion of omega-3 and omega-6 PUFAs from short-to long-chain counterparts occurs via a shared metabolic pathway involving fatty acid desaturases and elongase. This analysis leveraged genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics for RBC and plasma PUFAs, along with expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) to estimate tissue-specific genetically pre

Obesity and homocysteine (tHcy) are important risk factors for cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Plasma omega-3 fatty acids (ω-3 FAs) and omega-6 fatty acids (ω-6 FAs) are essential fatty acids with diverse biological effects in human health and disease. We have investigated the relation of plasma ω-3 FAs and ω-6 FAs levels with other cardiovascular risk factors including tHcy in severe obese subjects. This study was performed on 96 severe obese and 65 normal weight subjects. Plasma fatty acid composition was measured by GC/MS and serum tHcy level was measured by HPLC methods. There were no diffe

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids have two major field of interest. The first lies in their quantitative abundance and their role in the development and maintenance of the brain. The second is their role in the prevention of different pathologies, mainly the cardiovascular diseases, and more lately some psychiatric disorders, from stress to depression and dementia. Thus, dietary omega-3 fatty acids are very important to ensure brain structure and function, more specifically during development and aging. However, concerning essential alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), most occidental diets contain a

Both age and diet can contribute to alterations in triglyceride metabolism and subsequent metabolic disease. In humans, plasma triglyceride levels increase with age. Diets high in saturated fats can increase triglyceride levels while diets high in omega-3 fatty acids decrease triglyceride levels. Here we asked how age and long-term diet altered triglyceride metabolism in mice. We fed male and female C57Bl/6 mice a low-fat diet, a western diet (WD), or a diet high in polyunsaturated and omega-3 fatty acids (n3D) for up to 2 years. We measured survival, body composition, plasma triglyceride leve

The profiles of fatty acids (FAs) of plasma phospholipids (the compartment reflecting the essential FA status of tissue lipids), nonesterified FAs (the precursor pool for autacoid synthesis), urine protein excretion, and glomerular filtration rate were measured before and after supplementation with fish oil in 15 patients with immunoglobulin A nephropathy. In the FA profiles, there was deficient 18:3 omega 3 (alpha-linolenic acid), the parent compound of omega 3 polyunsaturated FA, and deficient chain elongation products of both omega 3 and omega 6 polyunsaturated FAs with replacement by satur

Omega-3 (n-3) and omega-6 (n-6) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are essential fatty acids necessary for human health. Currently, the Western diet contains a disproportionally high amount of n-6 PUFAs and low amount of n-3 PUFAs, and the resulting high n-6/n-3 ratio is thought to contribute to cardiovascular disease, inflammation, and cancer. Studies in human populations have linked high consumption of fish or fish oil to reduced risk of colon, prostate, and breast cancer, although other studies failed to find a significant association. Nonetheless, the available epidemiological evidence, c

In this study, we report the starvation effect and vibriosis infection on a tropical fish, the tiger grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus). The tiger groupers were infected with Vibrio vulnificus for 21 days. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry combined with multivariate analysis was used to assess the variation in metabolite profiles of E. fuscoguttatus. Metabolite productions in infected fishes were significantly influenced by fatty acid production. The Omega 9 (ω-9) was abundant under the challenged conditions compared to Omega 3 (ω-3) and Omega 6 (ω-6). A total of six fatty acids from the ω

The essentiality of n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) is described in relation to a thymus/thymocyte accretion of arachidonic acid (20:4n-6, AA) in early development, and the high requirement of lymphoid and other cells of the immune system for AA and linoleic acid (1 8:2n-6, LA) for membrane phospholipids. Low n-6 PUFA intakes enhance whereas high intakes decrease certain immune functions. Evidence from in vitro and in vivo studies for a role of AA metabolites in immune cell development and functions shows that they can limit or regulate cellular immune reactions and can induce deviation

Adequate intake of nutrients such as essential fatty acids (EFA) are critical in cystic fibrosis (CF). The clinical course of deterioration of lung function in people with CF has been shown to relate to nutrition. Independent of the higher energy consumption and malabsorption due to pancreatic insufficiency, EFA deficiency is closely associated with the risk of pulmonary infection, the most significant pathology in CF. This review will focus on the EFA deficiency identified in people with CF, as well as the limited progress made in deciphering the exact metabolic pathways that are dysfunctiona

Mercury is one of the most harmful pollutants in aquatic ecosystems. The present study assessed the effects of gradual concentrations of mercury (1, 10, 50, and 100 μg L-1) on the antioxidant status and fatty acid profiles in the viscera of the solitary ascidian Ciona intestinalis (Linnaeus, 1767). Additionally, histological analyses were conducted on the ovary to evaluate morphological changes induced by mercury exposure. The results revealed an increase in malondialdehyde (MDA), protein carbonyl (PCO), glutathione (GSH) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) levels. Additionally, metallothionei

Background: Pediatric Major Depressive Disorder (pMDD) is one of the leading causes of disability in adolescents. There is currently no single explanation that fully accounts for the cause of the disorder, but various factors, including dysregulation of the immune and stress responses, have been linked to its onset. Oxylipins and endocannabinoids, derived from metabolization of n-3 and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), regulate inflammation and have been suggested to attenuate inflammation associated with depression. This study aims to understand whether adolescents with pMDD have alter
