Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) is a common sleep disorder, affecting over 4% of the general population, and is associated with metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease, independent of obesity and traditional risk factors. OSAS has been recently connected to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), the most common chronic liver disease in the world, which can be found in 30% of the general adult population. Several studies suggest that the chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH) of OSAS patients may per se trigger liver injury, inflammation, and fibrogenesis, promoting NAFLD developm…

AIM: This study aimed to investigate the antioxidant properties of betaine against oxytetracycline-induced fatty liver disease.
BACKGROUND: During the past decades, fatty liver has been considered a public health concern, with prevalence between 10-24% in the world. Betaine has been shown to have some antioxidant properties in our previous studies.
METHODS: For this purpose, 32 male Wistar rats, were divided into four groups: control, betaine (Bet., betaine 10 mg/kg daily for 15 days, orally), fatty liver (Fat., induction of fatty liver with oxytetracycline 120 mg/kg during three consecutive…

CONTEXT: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is associated with obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D), causing substantial burden from hepatic and extrahepatic complications. However, endocrinologists often follow people who are at the highest risk of its more severe form with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis or NASH (i.e., T2D or obesity with cardiometabolic risk factors). Endocrinologists are in a unique position to prevent cirrhosis in this population with early diagnosis and treatment.
OBJECTIVE: This work aims to offer endocrinologists a practical approach for the management of patients wit…

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has become a leading cause of chronic liver diseases globally. NAFLD includes a range of hepatic manifestations, starting with liver steatosis and potentially evolving towards nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, cirrhosis or even hepatocellular carcinoma. Although the pathogenesis of NAFLD is incompletely understood, insulin resistance and lipid metabolism disorder are implicated. The complement system is an essential part of the immune system, but it is also involved in lipid metabolism. In particular, activation of the alternative complement pathway and the…

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common chronic liver disease and is often caused by obesity. Currently, moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) are two effective treatments for reducing fat mass in patients with obesity and NAFLD. However, the comparative fat-reducing effects and underlying molecular mechanisms of MICT and HIIT remain unclear. This comprehensive study was performed on male Wistar rats treated with standard diet, high-fat diet, MICT, and HIIT to explore their comparative fat-reducing effects and correspondin…

The liver is one of the richest organs in mitochondria, serving as a hub for key metabolic pathways such as β-oxidation, the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, ketogenesis, respiratory activity, and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthesis, all of which provide metabolic energy for the entire body. Mitochondrial dysfunction has been linked to subcellular organelle dysfunction in liver diseases, particularly fatty liver disease. Acute fatty liver of pregnancy (AFLP) is a life-threatening liver disorder unique to pregnancy, which can result in serious maternal and fetal complications, including death…

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is associated with several extrahepatic manifestations such as cardiovascular disease and sleep apnea. Furthermore, NAFLD is reported to be associated with an increased risk of incident chronic kidney disease (CKD). Inflammation and oxidative stress are suggested to be the key factors involved in the inflammatory mechanisms and pathways linking NAFLD to CKD and are responsible for both the pathogenesis and the progression of CKD in NAFLD patients. This review aims to provide a more comprehensive overview of the association between CKD and NAFLD, also co…

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) progressing to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), cirrhosis, end-stage liver disease (ESRD), and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is emerging as a global epidemic. Obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome are some of the leading risk factors for NAFLD. The most prevalent treatment to stop the progression is aimed at dietary modification and lifestyle changes. Bariatric surgery is indicated for patients with morbid obesity with NAFLD. The progression of NAFLD to NASH and HCC can be arrested at various stages of pathogenesis by the already prevalent dr…

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is the most common cause of chronic liver disease in North America and is growing as a cause of chronic liver disease in many other parts of the world as well. It has 2 principal clinical-pathologic phenotypes: (1) nonalcoholic fatty liver and (2) nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. The development of both phenotypes is tightly linked to excess body weight and insulin resistance. This review discusses the emerging tools for the analysis of the microbiome, their limitations, and the existing literature with respect to the intestinal microbiome and their role in nonalc…

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a spectrum of chronic liver conditions that are characterized by steatosis, inflammation, fibrosis, and liver injury. The global prevalence of NAFLD is rapidly increasing in proportion to the rising incidence of obesity and type 2 diabetes. Because NAFLD is a multifaceted disorder with many underlying metabolic abnormalities, currently, there is no pharmacological agent that is therapeutically approved for the treatment of this disease. Folate is a water-soluble B vitamin that plays an essential role in one-carbon transfer reactions involved in nucle…

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is generally considered as a disease associated with diabetes mellitus type 2. But on a closer evaluation we realize a host of confusion associated with this from the nomenclature, diagnosis to pathogenesis. The term refers to a spectrum ranging from steatosis to steatosis with inflammation (NASH) to cirrhosis in the absence of alcohol abuse. But in fact NAFLD is a vague term for a spectrum of diseases which differ not only in the clinical presentation but also in the etiology. NAFLD is loose to incorporate so many etiologies excluding alcoholism and fe…

The range of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) includes simple hepatic steatosis, the inflammatory non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), fibrosis and cirrhosis. The accumulation of specific lipids in hepatocytes has been associated with oxidative stress and progression of the disease. Elevated serum free fatty acids and hepatocyte lipotoxicity can be studied in an in vitro cellular model. For this purpose, we cultured the human liver cell line, HepG2/C3A, in medium supplemented with increasing amounts of oleic acid (C18:1) and evaluated oxidative stress by measuring the content of the …

We describe a case of acute fatty liver that developed during the third trimester of pregnancy. Acute fatty liver of pregnancy (AFLP) is a well-documented medical condition and is important due to its implications on maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. AFLP is managed with supportive care and close surveillance is needed in patients with a previous history of this disease. Long-term sequelae such as brain damage may also occur. This case was unusual because the patient presented due to a co-incident uterine scar rupture and was subsequently diagnosed with AFLP. Although no association …
