Desmoplastic fibroma of bone. A report of six cases.

The clinical and pathological features of six cases of desmoplastic fibroma of bone are presented. Desmoplastic fibroma is rarely seen as a primary tumour of bone; when it does occur the sites of predilection are the long bones, but other sites such as the scapula and os calcis can be involved. Radiographically the lesion tends to expand the bone from within; it is well-demarcated and lytic, often with a trabeculated soap-bubble appearance. The cellular structure and the morphological arrangement are similar to those of aggressive fibromatosis of soft tissues. Differential diagnosis from malig…

Peripheral ossifying fibromas: a series of 500 cases.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the clinical and histopathologic features of peripheral ossifying fibromas (POFs). STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective search of the archives of our diagnostic oral pathology service was performed for POFs diagnosed from January 1, 2017 to September 1, 2025. RESULTS: There were 500 POFs in 474 patients. The female-to-male ratio was 1.6:1, and the mean age was 35.6 years. The anterior maxilla was the most common location. The majority of lesions were pink to red in colour, with a pedunculated base. They were frequently ulcerated (69.8%). Possible local and systemic contri…

Desmoplastic Fibroma of the Maxilla: A Report of a Rare Case.

Desmoplastic fibroma (DF) is an uncommon benign tumor of bone that is notable for its locally destructive nature and frequent recurrence. The lesion originates within the osseous tissue and most often affects the mandible, pelvic girdle, and long bones; involvement of the maxilla is rare. An 18-year-old female patient presented with a slowly developing lesion in the right maxillary premolar area. Clinical examination supported by radiographic findings demonstrated an intraosseous pathology, and histopathological evaluation confirmed the diagnosis of desmoplastic fibroma. Although benign, this …

Surgical debulking of large ventricular fibromas in children.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to provide an update on the clinical presentation, diagnostic workup, operative strategies, and midterm outcomes in children undergoing ventricular fibroma resection. METHODS: Single-center, retrospective cohort study of patients undergoing ventricular fibroma resection between 2000 and 2023. RESULTS: Among 52 patients, median age at surgery was 2.0 years (interquartile range, 0.8-4.6) and median tumor volume index was 69 mL/m2 (interquartile range, 49-169). Tumor distorted the atrioventricular valve/subvalvar apparatus in 30 patients (58%) and abutted major epicar…

A Rare Case of Central Odontogenic Fibroma of the Mandible.

The benign tumor central odontogenic fibroma (COF) accounts for less than 1% of all the existing odontogenic tumors. The mandibular or maxillary cortical plate is seen to show asymptotic diversification. It has been characterized as a benign jaw neoplasm. Radiographically, it primarily manifests as a multilocular radiolucency. Histologically, it comprises fibroblasts and mature collagen fibers. The popular choice for the management of COFs is enucleation, followed by the extraction of associated teeth. COFs have maintained a track record of showing rare chances of recurrence following surgery.…

Nevus Lipomatosus Cutaneous Superficialis With Perifollicular Fibromas.

Nevus lipomatosus cutaneous superficialis (NLCS) is a rare cutaneous hamartoma characterized by groups of mature fat cells in the dermis. Th … in 2003. The perifollicular fibrosis is characteristic of other rare hamartoma, the perifollicular fibroma, but is also present in fibrofolliculomas or trichodiscomas, angiofibromas, and fibrotic papules on the face of tuberous sclerosis and postinflammatory fibrosis. This case is very similar to the first described case of NLCS with perifollicular fibro …

Two cases of multiple ossifying fibromas in the jaws.

BACKGROUND: The clinicopathologic characteristics of multiple ossifying fibroma (OF) are unclear due to the condition's rarity, making diagnosis challenging. Sporadic multiple OFs must be distinguished from hyperparathyroidism-jaw tumour syndrome (HPT-JT) related OF and other fibro-osseous lesions. METHODS: Multiple OF cases were identified from ossifying fibroma cases. Clinical data including age, sex, anatomic site, radiographic features, clinical impression, treatment and available follow-up data as well as serum calcium, phosphorus, and parathyroid hormone (PTH) were recorded. GNAS and HR…

Desmoplastic fibroma of the mandible: report of a misdiagnosed case.

Several odontogenic and non-odontogenic tumors and related lesions affecting the jaws share clinical presentation and imaging appearance. However, all cases have to be approached and treated on an individual basis, based on a reliable anatomic pathology diagnosis. The present paper describes a case of a desmoplastic fibroma, which was misdiagnosed as an odontogenic keratocyst, and spotlights the potential benefit and conclusive role of a second opinion in oral and maxillofacial pathology diagnosis. A brief review of the literature is also provided.

[Chondromyxoid fibroma of the left maxillary and ethmoid sinuses].

Chondromyxoid fibroma is an infrequent bone tumour in the craniofacial bones and exceptional in the paranasal sinuses. This unusual location, its non-specific clinical manifestation and aggressive behaviour with local destruction and a high recurrence rate can complicate precise diagnosis and treatment.

Chondromyxoid fibroma of the acromium with soft tissue extension.

Chondromyxoid fibroma is an unusual, benign tumor of cartilaginous origin and represents less than 1% of all primary bone tumors. It usually involves the long bones around the knee joint or the flat bones of the pelvis or ribs. Soft tissue extension is also thought to be rare in these lesions. They are usually eccentrically located in the metaphyses of the long bones and centrally in the flat bones. The radiographic appearances are characteristically those of a single, lytic lesion with lobulated margins, septations, cortical expansion and a sclerotic rim. Histologically, they display a lobula…

The multidisciplinary management of psammomatoid ossifying fibroma of the orbit.

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the multidisciplinary management of psammomatoid ossifying fibroma (POF) of the orbit and to clarify the clinicopathologic terminology. DESIGN: The authors present a cohort of cases of POF involving the frontal and ethmoid sinuses and the orbit and discuss the nomenclature and literature. PARTICIPANTS: Three patients with POF and their treatment are discussed. INTERVENTION: Patients were worked up and treated by a multidisciplinary team using imaging studies and histopathologic analysis. Reconstruction, if necessary, was carried out at the time of excision or in a seco…

Craniofacial resection of ossifying fibromas and osteomas of the sinuses.

Massive fibro-osseous lesions of the frontal and ethmoidal sinuses are rare. If left untreated, these lesions can produce chronic infection, orbital complications, and/or intracranial events. In the past, resection of these lesions has usually been subtotal and a risk of damage to intracranial structures existed, particularly to the dura, due to poor exposure, and a high recurrence rate was also present. We have treated eight such lesions with a combined craniofacial approach for total resection with resolution of symptoms, without recurrence, and without occurrence of cerebrospinal fluid leak
