rpoB gene sequencing highlights the prevalence of an E. miricola cluster over other Elizabethkingia species among UK cystic fibrosis patients.

Difficulties in distinguishing species of the Elizabethkingia genus by MALDI-TOF prompted use of rpoB sequencing to investigate species distribution among 44 isolates from cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. Forty-three isolates from 38 patients formed a cluster comprising E. miricola and proposed novel species E. bruuniana sp. nov., the exception clustering with proposed species E. ursingii sp. nov., also part of this wider cluster. All 44 isolates were PCR-positive for urease gene ureG, whereas only one of 23 E. anophelis isolates from non-CF patients was positive, suggesting that this gene is la

Metagenomic insights into mechanisms of coral larval settlement induction and inhibition by marine biofilms.

BACKGROUND: Biofilms are essential to larval settlement in many marine invertebrates, yet the mechanisms driving settlement induction or inh … redicted to promote settlement were concentrated in metagenome assembled genomes (MAGs) assigned to Flavobacteriaceae, Rhodobacteraceae and Pirellulaceae, consistent with previous research identifying these lineages as potential inducers. While we detected homologues of some biosynthesis genes for the settlement-inducing compounds cycloprodigiosin and tetrabromopyr …

Genomic analysis reveals two dominant strains of Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale in Austria and Hungary with distinct multidrug resistance profiles.

Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale (ORT) is an emerging pathogen that poses significant challenges to commercial poultry production due to respiratory and systemic infections, leading to economic losses. Increasing multidrug resistance further complicates effective treatment strategies. Here, we present the first large-scale genomic analysis of ORT isolates from Europe, focusing on 94 newly sequenced isolates from Austria and Hungary. Phylogenetic analysis revealed two dominant clades, O1 and O2, which included isolates from both regions, indicating a lack of geographic segregation. Both clades d

Biochemical characterization and mucosal immune function of IgT in grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella).

Immunoglobulin T (IgT) is a teleost-specific immunoglobulin discovered to be specialized in mucosal immunity. For fish that live in water throughout their lives, eliciting a local mucosal immune response through immersion immunization is an important and highly suitable way for preventing fish diseases. However, due to the lack of corresponding antibodies against IgT, studies on its immune responses to pathogens and vaccines in commercial fish have largely been limited to rainbow trout. Thus, a valuable tool for assessing mucosal immune response to immersion vaccination is still lacking in mos

Exploring the potential of Flavobacterium covae catalase and DNA starvation/stationary phase protein as recombinant protein vaccines against columnaris disease in channel catfish.

Columnaris disease, caused by Flavobacterium covae, is a principal cause of mortality in the catfish industry that can lead to several million dollars in annual production losses. This Gram-negative bacterium is an opportunistic pathogen that manifests as a biofilm on the host's mucosal surfaces as the disease progresses. Recent work in our lab identified the upregulation of specific F. covae biofilm genes after stimulation with channel catfish mucus. We have previously demonstrated the effectiveness of using a F. covae recombinant protein for bath immersion vaccination of catfish to protect a

Mutant Prevention Concentrations of Ciprofloxacin and Levofloxacin and Target Gene Mutations of Fluoroquinolones in Elizabethkingia anophelis.

Fluoroquinolones are potentially effective against Elizabethkingia anophelis. We investigated the MIC, mutant prevention concentration (MPC), and target gene mutations of fluoroquinolones in E. anophelis. Eighty-five E. anophelis isolates were collected from five hospitals in Taiwan. The MIC and MPC of ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin were examined for all E. anophelis except 17 isolates, in which ciprofloxacin MPC could not be determined due to drug precipitation caused by overly high drug concentration. Mutations in the quinolone resistance-determining regions of DNA gyrase (GyrA and GyrB) and

Neonatal meningitis and sepsis by Chryseobacterium indologenes: a rare and resistant bacterium.

Early neonatal meningitis with non-fermenting Gram negative bacilli (NFGNB) is rare, and whenever it occurrs, inanimate environment is usually implicated as the source. The authors report a case of neonatal meningitis and sepsis with Chryseobacterium indologenes, a rare non fermenting Gram negative bacterium with unusual antimicrobial susceptibility. Despite resistance to all the beta lactams, carbapenems and aminoglycosides, therapy with ciprofloxacin led to a favorable outcome.

Systematic screening for the biocatalytic hydration of fatty acids from different oily substrates by Elizabethkingia meningoseptica oleate hydratase through a Design-of-experiments approach.

The edible plant oils production is associated with the release of different types of by-products. The latter represent cheap and available substrates to produce valuable compounds, such as flavours and fragrances, biologically active compounds and bio-based polymers. Elizabethkingia meningoseptica Oleate hydratases (Em_OhyA) can selectively catalyze the conversion of unsaturated fatty acids, specifically oleic acid, into hydroxy fatty acids, which find different industrial applications. In this study, Design-of-experiment (DoE) strategy was used to screen and identify conditions for reaching

Use of Penicillin and Streptomycin to Reduce Spread of Bacterial Coldwater Disease II: Efficacy of Using Antibiotics in Diluents and During Water Hardening.

Bacterial coldwater disease, caused by Flavobacterium psychrophilum, has lead to the loss of significant numbers of hatchery-reared salmonids. The bacteria can be spread from parent to progeny within contaminated sperm and ovarian fluid and can enter the egg during fertilization. The addition of antibiotics to diluents and water-hardening solutions could prevent the spread of the disease. In separate trials, a mixture of 0.197 mg/mL penicillin plus 0.313 mg/mL streptomycin was added to both a 0.5% sodium chloride fertilization diluent and hatchery well water during hardening. Tests showed that
