Smart controlled-release delivery of Pennisetum purpureum embedded supramolecular nanoparticles to reduce atherosclerotic plaque.

Vascular disease continues to be the primary cause of mortality and disability, often attributed to atherosclerosis. The present pharmacological treatment of atherosclerosis has limited therapeutic effectiveness. Herein, we report the synthesis of supramolecular nanoparticles through host-guest interactions involving β-cyclodextrin (β-CD), polypropylene glycol (PPG), and folic acid (FA) to create FA-PPG-β-CD, which effectively encapsulates bioactive compounds from Pennisetum purpureum extract for the smart control release of foam cells in atherosclerotic plaques. Pennisetum purpureum-loaded na…

Microbially degradable phenolic foams based on depolymerized Kraft lignin for hydrophilic applications.

Hydrophilic phenol-formaldehyde (PF) foams, widely used in floral and hydroponic applications, are produced using phenol typically derived from non-renewable petroleum-based resources. This study examines the potential of depolymerized Kraft lignin (DKL) as a sustainable substitute for phenol in the synthesis of hydrophilic biobased foams. At 50 % DKL substitution, the foams demonstrated excellent water absorption capacities (up to 2557 %), relatively low densities (∼62 kg/m3), and nearly 100 % open-cell content. Its compressive strength (20.64 kPa at 10 % deformation) is comparable to commerc

Do human osteoblasts grow into open-porous titanium?

A titanium foam for spine fusion and other applications was tested by cell culture. Its high porosity and surface roughness should enable bone cells to grow through it, resulting in a better fixation of the vertebral body. The foam was tested by in vitro experiments with human osteoblasts under static culture conditions and in a perfused system. By means of cell number, viability, scanning electron microscopy and histological staining, cell proliferation could be observed. The expression of osteogenic genes like collagen-I, alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin was proven by reverse transcripti

What about Phenol Formaldehyde (PF) Foam in Modern-Contemporary Art? Insights into the Unaged and Naturally Aged Material by a Multi-Analytical Approach.

The ageing behavior of phenol formaldehyde (PF) foam, a material increasingly used in modern-contemporary art, was investigated by a multi-analytical approach. PF foams with open- and closed-cell structures were selected and analyzed in their unaged and naturally indoor-aged state by employing optical microscopy (OM) and fiber optical reflectance spectroscopy (FORS) for assessing their morphology and color alteration. Micro-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (μ-FTIR) was used for determining chemical changes and oxidation processes, and the acidity was monitored by pH measurements. The re

Fut8 regulated Unc5b hyperfucosylation reduces macrophage emigration and accelerates atherosclerosis development via the ferroptosis pathway.

The accumulation of foam cells in the arterial walls is a defining characteristic of atherosclerosis. Enhancing their migration from plaques may represent a key strategy for slowing disease progression. Recent studies suggest that fucosyltransferase 8 (Fut8) impairs macrophage migration from the intima by modifying the Unc5b membrane receptor, thereby influencing the development of atherosclerosis. This study investigated the roles of Fut8 and Unc5b in foam cell migration using ApoE-/- mouse and foam cell models, employing techniques such as western blotting, mitochondrial function assays, wou…

Effects of Glass Fiber Content on the Cellular Morphology and Mechanical Properties of Microcellular Injection-Molded Polypropylene Composite Foams.

Glass-fiber-reinforced polypropylene (GF/PP) composite foams combine reinforcement with weight reduction, but how GF content governs the competition between cell refinement and foam expansion under fixed-cavity molding remains unclear. GF/PP composite foams containing 0-15 wt.% GF and a fixed 5 wt.% PP-g-MAH were prepared by fixed-cavity MuCell injection molding. Gas-free melt rheology, crystallization, cellular morphology, density, and mechanical properties were evaluated. Increasing GF content raised the apparent viscosity and shifted crystallization toward higher temperatures. The cell dens

Fine structure of cholesterolosis in the human gallbladder and the mechanism of lipid accumulation.

Gallbladders with cholesterolosis removed surgically for cholelithiasis were studied by light and electron microscopy as well as by cytochem … oplets. With the excessive lipid deposition, macrophages were filled with lipid droplets and became foam cells. In the epithelial cells, many reaction precipitates occurred after digitonin treatment and some of them were observed in the endoplasmic reticulum. It is suggested, therefore, that free cholesterol is absorbed by epithelial cells and thereafter bec …

Cyclophilin A enhances macrophage differentiation and lipid uptake in high glucose conditions: a cellular mechanism for accelerated macro vascular disease in diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Vascular disease in diabetes is initiated by monocyte adhesion to vascular endothelium, transmigration and formation of foam cells. Increasing clinical evidence supports a role for the secretory protein, cyclophilin A in diabetic vascular disease. The means by which cyclophilin A contributes to vascular lesion development in diabetes is however largely unknown. METHODS: In this study we investigated using THP1 cells and human monocytes whether cyclophilin A under hyperglycemic conditions, functions in the inflammatory cascade as a chemoattractant and increases lipid uptake by form…

Gypenoside XVII inhibits ox-LDL-induced macrophage inflammatory responses and promotes cholesterol efflux through activating the miR-182-5p/HDAC9 signaling pathway.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The deposition of lipids in macrophages and the subsequent formation of foam cells significantly increase the risk of developing atherosclerosis (As). Targeting ATP-binding cassette transporter A1/G1 (ABCA1/ABCG1)-mediated reverse cholesterol transport is crucial for regulating foam cell formation. Therefore, the search for natural chemical components with the ability to regulate ABCA1/G1 is a potential drug target to combat the development of atherosclerosis. Gypenoside XVII (GP-17), a gypenoside monomer extracted from gynostemma pentaphyllum, presents an effic…

von Hippel angiomatosis. A light, electron microscopic, and immunoperoxidase characterization.

A 25-year-old Iranian man had undergone eye wall resection of a large von Hippel angioma to alleviate an exaggerated macular response, affording study by light and electron microscopy and immunohistochemistry before the obfuscatory effects of long-standing exudative retinal detachment, gliosis, or iatrogenic ablation supervened. We used this vantage point to assess the interrelation between the component endothelial cells, pericytes, and stromal foam cells. On the basis of staining with glial fibrillary acidic protein, factor VIII, the C3 fraction of complement, fibrinogen, and lysozyme, it is…

Interfacial engineering of a "soft-hard" layer interface via cardanol-mediated chemical interlocking for high-performance soundproofing multilayer PLA-based composite foams.

The inherent brittleness of polylactic acid (PLA) restricts expand its functional applications. This study innovatively constructs a sustainable multilayer composite PLA-based foam featuring a "soft-hard" layer interface. The high-toughness polypropylene carbonate (PPC) was employed into the PLA matrix to regulate macromolecular chain mobility and form new covalent bonds, successfully reducing crystallinity from 50.87% to 20.94%. The 30 wt% PPC/PLA composite foam with optimized the melt index achieved 4.52 × 106 cells/cm3 of high cell density and uniform cell structure by the supercritical car

Homocysteine accelerates atherosclerosis by inhibiting scavenger receptor class B member1 via DNMT3b/SP1 pathway.

Homocysteine (Hcy) is an independent risk factor for atherosclerosis, which is characterized by lipid accumulation in the atherosclerotic plaque. Increasing evidence supports that as the main receptor of high-density lipoprotein, scavenger receptor class B member 1 (SCARB1) is protective against atherosclerosis. However, the underlying mechanism regarding it in Hcy-mediated atherosclerosis remains unclear. Here, we found the remarkable inhibition of SCARB1 expression in atherosclerotic plaque and Hcy-treated foam cells, whereas overexpression of SCARB1 can suppress lipid accumulation in foam c…

Cathepsin C promotes atherosclerosis by modulating neutrophil recruitment and neutrophil extracellular trap formation.

Atherosclerotic plaque instability is a critical determinant of sudden cardiac death (SCD). While Cathepsin C (CTSC) participates in inflammatory diseases, its functional contribution and cellular origin in atherosclerosis remain incompletely understood. This study investigates whether CTSC derived from foam cells modulates neutrophil behavior to exacerbate plaque progression. We analyzed human coronary arteries from control, coronary heart disease (CHD), and SCD cohorts. An ApoE-/- mouse model of atherosclerosis with AAV-mediated CTSC knockdown was established. Cellular experiments involved c…

p62/mTOR/LXRα pathway inhibits cholesterol efflux mediated by ABCA1 and ABCG1 during autophagy blockage.

OBJECTIVE: Atherosclerosis is a disease characterized by abnormal lipid metabolism, and the formation of foam cells is considered an early event of atherosclerosis. Intracellular cholesterol efflux mediated by ABCA1 and ABCG1 helps to reduce lipid accumulation in foam cells. Related studies have shown that autophagy and mTOR are involved in cholesterol efflux, but the role of p62, an autophagy substrate protein, has not been evaluated. METHODS: THP-1 derived macrophages were incubated with ox-LDL to establish a foam cell model and treated with different autophagy inducers. The effects of p62 …

In Situ Generation of Gel Foam via Heat-Accelerated Calcium Ion Release From Nano-CaCO3 for Lithium-Ion Battery Fire Suppression and Prevention.

Thermal runaway and its propagation in lithium-ion battery packs pose significant safety risks to energy storage systems. While complete immersion in water-based agents is an effective suppression strategy, conventional agents often fail to achieve sustained battery encapsulation because of low viscosity and rapid runoff. In this study, we report a thermally accelerated in situ crosslinking strategy to create an alginate gel foam for excellent battery fire suppression and propagation prevention. Our approach utilizes nano-CaCO3 as a dormant calcium ion source and δ-gluconolactone (GDL) as a sl

Enhancing stereocomplexation by the synergistic effect of d-mannitol and CO2 foaming: Toward high-performance and fully bio-based polylactic acid foams.

Although polylactic acid (PLA) stereocomplex (SC) crystallites have superior mechanical strength and heat resistance compared to homocrystallites (HC), the preparation of PLA foams with a high content of SC crystallites and a fine cell structure remains challenging. Herein, d-Mannitol (DM) with plentiful hydroxyl groups was utilized as an efficient bio-based nucleating agent for the SC crystallization of PLLA/PDLA blends. The results demonstrated that the incorporation of DM significantly promoted SC crystallization under both non-isothermal and isothermal conditions. This preferential SC crys
