Diagnosing infection in febrile granulocytopenic patients with indium-111-labeled human immunoglobulin G.

PURPOSE: Delineation of focal infection is a major problem in the management of febrile granulocytopenic patients. The utility of indium-111-labeled human nonspecific immunoglobulin G (In-111-IgG), a newly developed radiopharmaceutical for imaging focal inflammation, was reported in patients with adequate WBC counts. In the present study, we investigated whether In-111-IgG scintigraphy could be used to locate infection in granulocytopenic patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Granulocytopenic rats with focal infection were imaged after In-111-IgG injection. Thereafter, In-111-IgG scintigraphy was …

IFN-γ-deficient mice develop IL-1-dependent cutaneous and musculoskeletal inflammation during experimental brucellosis.

Human brucellosis exhibits diverse pathological manifestations that can affect almost any organ. In particular, osteoarticular complications are the most common focal manifestation of brucellosis and occur in 40-80% of patients. In immunocompetent mice, Brucella replication is generally restricted to the spleen, liver, and to a lesser extent, LNs, thereby limiting their use for study of focal inflammation often found in brucellosis. Here, we report that nasal, oral, or peritoneal infection of IFN-γ(-/-) mice with WT Brucella melitensis or Brucella abortus results in joint and periarticular tis

Brainstem ocular motility defects and AIDS.

Ocular motility manifestations of focal brainstem dysfunction were the initial clinical features in three patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. These included conjugate gaze palsy with ipsilateral facial paresis, bilateral abducens palsy and a gaze paresis, and homolateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia and abducens nerve paresis. Two patients had focal brainstem lesions as evidenced on neuroimaging. The third showed concurrent infection with Treponema pallidum.

Medical-dental considerations in the care of children with facial cellulitis of odontogenic origin. A disease of interest for pediatricians and pediatric dentists.

An odontogenic infection is a polymicrobial, mixed infection (aerobic and anaerobic bacteria). It comprises various clinical conditions, whose importance varies depending on their frequency and potential severity. It is the most common type of oral infection and its treatment involves up to 10% of all antibiotic prescriptions. Facial cellulitis is a diffuse inflammation of soft tissue that is not confined or limited to a specific region and tends to spread. The objective of this review is to update the aspects considered in the care of children with facial cellulitis of odontogenic origin and

Imperforate hymen complicated with pyocolpos and lobar nephronia.

An imperforate hymen is not a rare condition in female newborns, but is often ignored in a genital examination by physicians. Lobar nephronia is a rare condition in pediatric patients that can be screened by ultrasound or computed tomography to distinguish it from a renal abscess. Treatment for lobar nephronia requires at least 14 days of antimicrobial therapy and a follow-up assessment by renal ultrasonography or dimercaptosuccinic acid scan. We report an unusual case of a 2-year-old girl with an imperforate hymen and pyocolpos. The pyocolpos compressed the left lower ureter to cause hydroure

Toxic shock syndrome occurring in children with abrasive injuries beneath casts.

Staphylococcal toxic shock syndrome has been reported in a number of nonmenstrual settings, including orthopedic patients with postoperative staphylococcal wound infections. We describe two cases of toxic shock syndrome in children with focal cutaneous staphylococcal infections occurring beneath casts placed for limb immobilization. These cases illustrate a new and potentially hidden site of staphylococcal infection leading to toxic shock syndrome.

Toxic shock syndrome: odontogenic origin.

Although the majority of reported cases of toxic shock syndrome (TSS) in the United States continue to be associated with tampon use, TSS also occurs in postpartum women and in patients with pharyngitis, infected surgical wounds, cutaneous and subcutaneous infections, and infections of other body sites. The article presents the case of a 23-year-old black man in whom TSS developed secondary to an odontogenic infection.

[Dental care and joint prostheses].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Infectious dental foci and oral dental care constitute one of the leading causes of arthroplasty infection after infections involving the skin and the urinary tract. There is however no formal evidence confirming the relationship between oral or dental care and arthroplasty infection. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We reviewed 44 cases of arthroplasty infection secondary to dental infections and searched for data in the literature. In our series, no risk factor could be identified for 24 cases. The median disease-free interval was five years and mean time from the oral-dental pro

Treatment options for odontogenic maxillary sinusitis: a review.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is to review the main treatment options for odontogenic sinusitis that are used today. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Search on PubMed, Cochrane Library, PMC, Science Direct data bases. For a literature review search keywords were used: odontogenic sinusitis, odontogenic maxillary sinusitis treatment OR diagnosis, maxillary sinusitis of dental source OR dental origin OR etiology. RESULTS: 2886 articles were found in the databases using keywords. After duplicate citations screened, inclusion/exclusion criteria applied, excluded articles after titles, summaries and fu

[Lymphatic system of the tongue and its role in glositis of odontogenic origin].

In aged persons reduction of diameter of tongue lymphatic capillaries precedes thinning of the Kaarl net. In the process of tongue inflammation, lymphogenic way of inclusion in 6|6 and 8|8 teeth lower area should be stuck out with existence of alleged "Integration Centers". Lymphatic knots and lymphatic ducts are in prevailed placed in corresponding tissues of lower-chin and lower teeth. Lymphatic-muscular system and its anatomical links and age-related changeability raise the special interest during odontogenic infections with tongue inflammation.

Update on general health risk of periodontal disease.

OBJECTIVES: To review the potential of periodontal infections to cause nonoral diseases. Therapeutic recommendations are provided to help patients and dental practitioners prevent systemic complications from periodontal infections. FINDINGS: Systemic diseases from oral bacteria are mostly caused by transient bacteraemias, which can occur spontaneously from dental foci of infection, from mastication, brushing, flossing or other daily manipulations, or from dental treatments. Examples of systemic infections that may involve oral microorganisms include infective endocarditis, aspiration pneumoni

Septic pulmonary embolism associated with periodontal disease: reports of two cases and review of the literature.

We report two cases of septic pulmonary embolism associated with periodontitis. Chest CT revealed multiple nodular shadows with features characteristic of septic pulmonary embolism in both patients. Both patients had toothache, fever, and chest pain, and showed findings of periodontitis at initial presentation. Antimicrobial agents combined with dental surgery were successful in treatment. While septic pulmonary embolism from the lesions of periodontitis appears to be rare, periodontitis remains important in the differential diagnosis of septic pulmonary embolism.

Severe versus local odontogenic bacterial infections: comparison of microbial isolates.

AIM: It was the aim of this study to evaluate the clinical and microbiological differences between severe and local odontogenic abscesses. METHODS: Thirty patients were prospectively enrolled. Sixteen of 30 patients suffered from a severe life-threatening abscess of the head and neck, whereas 14/30 patients presented with a localized submucous abscess. Anaerobic bacteria were identified and susceptibility testing was performed using E test strips for penicillin, amoxicillin + clavulanic acid, imipenem + cilastatin, clindamycin and metronidazole. RESULTS: The mean duration until removal of al
