The drug was used for 50 years in anemia megaloblastia, other anemias with bone marrow hypofunction, in leucopenia and granulocytopenia, in celiac disease and sprue and folic acid deficit during oral anticonceptive drug use. This review examines evidence linking periconceptional folic acid intake to neural tube defects (NTDs) and related public health issues in the United States and developing countries. Sources of information were identified through on-line searches (Medline, UCAT-University of Connecticut) and by contacting researchers in the field. The distribution of NTDs varies across regions. A series of 130 consecutive outpatients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis were screened at the oral medicine department, Glasgow Dental Hospital, for deficienciesin vitamin b12, folic acid, and iron. In 23 patients (17.7%) such deficiencies werefound; five were deficient in vitamin B12, seven in folic acid, and 15 in iron. Four had more than one deficiency. Calcium and folic acid absorption were studied in 28 adult male epileptics on chronic anticonvulsant therapy. In 16 patients on diphenylhydantoin alone, calcium absorption was abnormal in 9. In 12 patients on both diphenylhydantoin and phenobarbital, calcium absorption was abnormal in 3 patients.
