Risk-based inspection as a cost-effective strategy to reduce human exposure to cysticerci of Taenia saginata in low-prevalence settings.

BACKGROUND: Taenia saginata cysticercus is the larval stage of the zoonotic parasite Taenia saginata, with a life-cycle involving both cattle and humans. The public health impact is considered low. The current surveillance system, based on post-mortem inspection of carcasses has low sensitivity and leads to considerable economic burden. Therefore, in the interests of public health and food production efficiency, this study aims to explore the potential of risk-based and cost-effective meat inspection activities for the detection and control of T. saginata cysticercus in low prevalence settings

Improving meat inspection and control in resource-poor communities: the Nepal example.

Meat is an important source of protein and a valuable commodity in resource-poor communities. In many developing countries, lack of appropriate slaughtering facilities and unsatisfactory slaughtering techniques are causing unnecessary losses of meat as well as invaluable by-products from animal carcasses. Slaughtering places are frequently contaminated and may not be protected against dogs, rodents and insects. Meat products coming from such conditions are often deteriorated due to bacterial infection or contaminated, which may cause food poisoning or diseases in consumers. In many developing

Validation of a Five Plate Test, the STAR protocol, for the screening of antibiotic residues in muscle from different animal species according to European Decision 2002/657/EC.

The STAR protocol is a Five Plate Test (FPT) developed several years ago at the Community Reference Laboratory (CRL) for the screening of antimicrobial residues in milk and muscle. This paper presents the validation of this method according to European Decision 2002/657/EC and to an internal guideline for validation. A validation protocol based on 'simulated tissues' and on a list of 16 representative antimicrobials to be validated was implemented in our laboratory during several months for the STAR protocol. The performance characteristics of the method were determined (specificity, detection

Prevalence of Taenia saginata cysticercosis in French cattle in 2010.

Bovine cysticercosis is a foodborne disease caused by the cestode Taenia saginata with cattle as the intermediate host and humans as the final host. This disease is responsible for direct financial losses for farmers. It is also economically important because human infestation through raw or undercooked meat consumption can have a negative impact on the confidence the consumer has in the food industry. This study aimed to determine the apparent and true prevalence of bovine cysticercosis in France and describe the locations of identified cysticercosis lesions. The study sample included 4,564,0

A case-control study of risk factors for bovine cysticercosis in Danish cattle herds.

Bovine cysticercosis (BC) is a zoonotic, parasitic infection in cattle. Under the current EU meat inspection regulation, every single carcass from all bovines above 6 weeks of age is examined for BC. This method is costly and makes more sense in countries with higher number of BC-infected animals than in countries with few lightly infected cases per year. The aim of the present case-control study was to quantify associations between potential herd-level risk factors and BC in Danish cattle herds. Risk factors can be used in the design of a risk-based meat inspection system targeted towards the

The Short-Lived Epidemic of Botulism From Commercially Canned Foods in the United States, 1919 to 1925.

In 1919, three deadly outbreaks of botulism caused by consumption of canned olives packed in California captured national headlines. In all of the outbreaks, which occurred in separate locales, unsuspecting people died after consuming tainted food during a banquet or family meal. The press's sensational portrayal of canned food as hazardous aroused alarm among consumers at a time when commercial canning was becoming more common. Intent on restoring the image of their product as safe and wholesome, canning industry leaders funded a "botulism commission" of scientific experts in 1919 to investig

Fasciolopsiasis: is it a controllable food-borne disease?

Fasciolopsiasis, endemic to the Orient and Southeast Asia, is a snail-transmitted, intestinal, food-borne parasitic zoonosis caused by a trematode, Fasciolopsis buski, which also infects farm pigs. Fasciolopsiasis remains a public health problem despite changes in eating habits, alterations in social and agricultural practices, health education, industrialization, and environmental alterations. The disease occurs focally and is most prevalent in school-age children. In foci of parasite transmission, the prevalence of infection in children ranges from 57% in mainland China to 25% in Taiwan and

Comparative evaluation of the association among enumeration methods and production of enterotoxins in food-derived Staphylococcus aureus.

Staphylococcal food poisoning is one of the most common foodborne diseases worldwide; it results from the ingestion of staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs) in food, mainly Staphylococcus aureus. This study investigated the statistical relationships among morphological enumerations of food-derived S. aureus and production of SEs using different methodologies. Food samples naturally contaminated with coagulase-positive S. aureus were submitted for enumeration on Baird-Parker (BP) agar, Rabbit Plasma Fibrinogen agar (RPFA), and Petrifilm Staph Express count system (STX), and the morphologically typi

Quantification of Anisakis simplex allergens in fresh, long-term frozen, and cooked fish muscle.

Fish-borne parasitic zoonoses such as Anisakiasis were once limited to people living in countries where raw or undercooked fish is traditionally consumed. Nowadays, several factors, such as the growing international markets, the improved transportation systems, the population movements, and the expansion of ethnic ways of cooking in developed countries, have increased the population exposed to these parasites. Improved diagnosis technology and a better knowledge of the symptoms by clinicians have increased the Anisakiasis cases worldwide. Dietary recommendations to Anisakis-sensitized patients

Carcass condemnation prediction using artificial neural networks in poultry slaughterhouses.

Challenges related to carcass quality and high condemnation rates result in significant economic losses. Also, the rigorous inspection of broiler carcasses is essential to ensure sanitary standards and food safety in industrial poultry production. To enhance traditional inspection methods, this study evaluated the use of artificial neural networks (ANN) to predict conditions and condemnations in broiler chickens. Data from 3370 flocks inspected at a poultry company in southern Brazil between 2019 and 2022 were analyzed and 16 output variables were modeled using NeuroShell Predictor software. N

Occurrence of several main antibiotic residues in raw milk in 10 provinces of China.

In the present study, 199 raw milk samples were analysed for beta-lactams, tetracyclines, sulfonamides and quinolones. They were obtained from collection tanks of milk routes in 10 provinces of China. The occurrence and concentration range of the four antibiotics were investigated by competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay methods. At the detectable level, 0.5%, 47.2% and 20.1% of samples were positive for beta-lactams, quinolones and sulfonamides, respectively. No sample was positive for tetracyclines. Beta-lactams were positive only in Beijing while quinolones and sulfonamides were pos

Assessing the risk of human trichinellosis from pigs kept under controlled and non-controlled housing in Europe.

To support risk-based approach to prevent human trichinellosis, we estimated the human incidence for pigs originating from controlled and non-controlled housing, using a quantitative microbial risk assessment model for Trichinella (QMRA-T). Moreover, the effect of test sensitivity on human trichinellosis incidence from pigs from non-controlled housing was quantified. The estimated annual risk from pigs from non-controlled housing was 59,443 human trichinellosis cases without testing at meat inspection and 832 (95%CI 346-1410) cases with Trichinella testing, thus preventing 98.6% of trichinello

[One Case for Two].

One Case for Two Abstract. We report on a 59-year-old patient with a rash, hypotension and chest pain after eating tuna fish. A diagnosis of scombroid fish poisoning was made. It is a syndrome resembling an allergic reaction that occurs after eating fish of the Scombridae family contaminated with high levels of histamine. The authorities responsible for food safety should be immediately informed in order to investigate the event from their perspective, i.e. inspect selling premises, sample and test implicated food, as well as to take appropriate measures. Anaphylaxis rarely manifests as a vaso

Effect of a buried knot in the healing process of dental extraction sites: a prospective study in cats.

ObjectivesThis study aimed to evaluate the effect of the buried-knot suture technique on gingival wound healing in cats undergoing dental extractions. We hypothesised that a simple buried-knot interrupted suture would provide a healing advantage at the extraction sites.MethodsA prospective, randomised, split-mouth design was used, involving 40 cats sequentially included in the study. Each side of the mouth was sutured using simple interrupted sutures, with and without a buried knot. Healing was assessed at 2, 4 and 6 weeks postoperatively through visual inspection of the maxillary sites. Indic

[Relationship between the prevalence of hepatic milk spots in pig and the egg density of Ascaris suum in Kitakyushu Municipal Meat Inspection and Control Center].

The hepatic milk spots of pigs are chronic interstitial hepatitis, and are caused by the migration of pig ascarid worm, Ascaris suum, into the liver. A large number of livers are condemned in meat inspection centers as defective food once they are found to have developed milk spots, and thus the economic loss is great. Eggs of Ascaris suum from 120 caecum feces of slaughtered pigs were detected by the nylon mesh filtration (Makiya) technique and they were related to the condemnation data of the milk spot livers in Kitakyushu Municipal Meat Inspection and Control Center from April 2000 to Febru

Survey of residual tetracycline antibiotics and sulfa drugs in kidneys of diseased animals in the Aichi Prefecture, Japan (1995-1999).

Animal kidneys were collected in order to survey the incidence of tetracycline (TC) antibiotics and sulfa (SA) drug residues in slaughtered animals that did not pass inspection for human consumption by the Japanese Food Sanitation Law and the Meat Inspection Law at the slaughterhouses in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, from April 1995 to March 2000. The kidneys were analyzed by AOAC Official Method 995.09 for TCs and our previously reported liquid chromatographic method for SAs. Among 292 animals (94 cattle and 198 pigs), 106 (36.6%) and 41 (14.0%) contained TCs and SAs, respectively, including chlor

Taeniasis, cysticercosis and echinococcosis/hydatidosis in Nigeria: II--prevalence of bovine and porcine cysticercosis, and hydatid disease in slaughtered food animals based on retrospective analysis of abattoir records.

A retrospective analysis of slaughterhouse records during the pre-veterinary-organized meat inspection era (before 1970) for cysticercosis and hydatidosis in food animals showed that parasitic cysts were documented but not identified and that the numbers of slaughtered animal species harbouring various parasitic cysts were not recorded. Since the various parasites which the meat inspectors observed were not identified, the prevalence of species encountered could not be determined. An analysis of abattoir records during the veterinary meat inspection era showed that Cysticercus bovis and C. cel

Nematode Infections in Commercially Important Squid Species: Distribution Patterns and Food Safety Issues.

INTRODUCTION: Cephalopods represent a valuable fishery resource worldwide and play a crucial role in the marine food chain both as predators and prey but also as paratenic hosts for the transmission of Ascaridoids, including zoonotic nematodes of the Anisakidae family. This study aimed to assess the presence, tissue distribution and species composition of zoonotic parasites in four squid species marketed in Italy, coming from four different FAO areas. METHODS: A total of 238 squid specimens, Illex sp., I. coindetii, I. illecebrosus and Todaropsis eblanae, were caught across four FAO areas and

Microarray for Identification of the Chiropteran Host Species of Rabies Virus in Canada.

Species identification through genetic barcoding can augment traditional taxonomic methods, which rely on morphological features of the specimen. Such approaches are especially valuable when specimens are in poor condition or comprise very limited material, a situation that often applies to chiropteran (bat) specimens submitted to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency for rabies diagnosis. Coupled with phenotypic plasticity of many species and inconclusive taxonomic keys, species identification using only morphological traits can be challenging. In this study, a microarray assay with associated
