Diet self-selection and food hoarding after food deprivation by Siberian hamsters.

Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus) increase food hoarding, but not food intake, after a fast. Because the physiological mechanisms underlying these changes in food hoarding are virtually unknown, we sought insight into these mechanisms by allowing hamsters to self-select their diet from food sources varying in macronutrient composition and caloric density ("dietary wisdom"). Therefore, the effects of food deprivation length on diet self-selection were tested in adult female hamsters after adaptation to three composite diets: sunflower seeds (SS), pellet chow (PC), and rabbit chow (RC). One

Persistence of binge-eating patterns after a history of restriction with intermittent bouts of refeeding on palatable food in rats: implications for bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that experience with food restriction produces persistent binge eating. The Minnesota semistarvation experiment and studies of prisoners-of-war show that chronic food restriction produces dramatic changes in eating behavior (including binge eating) that endure decades after restriction has ceased. Bulimia nervosa patients who restrict also binge. Restriction may be a risk factor in the etiology of binge eating and bulimia. METHOD: Animals were subjected to four different patterns of 12-week restriction-refeeding cycles. The rats were either food restricted (d

Eating behavior in bulimia nervosa: multiple meal analyses.

Ten bulimic individuals were admitted to an inpatient unit and for 7 consecutive days eating behavior was observed and recorded. Age, sex, and weight-matched control subjects (n = 10) were admitted to the same unit for 4 d. All food and fluid intake, frequency of binge eating and purging, and ratings of appetite and mood before and after eating were recorded every 24 h. Bulimic patients demonstrated chaotic eating patterns that varied within as well as between individuals. Total daily energy intake was significantly higher for bulimic patients (41982 +/- 113 kJ; 10,034 +/- 2701 kcal) than for

Beyond the plate: nutritional gaps and health risks in selective eaters with ASD - a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Food selectivity (FS) is among the most frequent and challenging feeding difficulties in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It is often driven by sensory processing differences and behavioral rigidity, leading to restricted diets, nutritional deficiencies, and psychosocial strain. This review synthesizes current evidence on the prevalence, mechanisms, and health consequences of FS in children with ASD. METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Eligible studies included children aged ≤ 18 years with ASD and asses

Educational Gaps and Communication Priorities for the Healthfulness of Carbohydrate Foods.

BACKGROUND: Although shared understanding between consumers and experts, and within experts themselves, is essential for healthier food choices, no existing method systematically prioritizes foods based on the magnitude of health education gaps. OBJECTIVE: To develop and apply a quantitative belief-mapping methodology to identify commonly consumed foods that warrant prioritization for research and nutrition communication. METHODS: Based on survey data and a meta-nutrition profiling system that represents transparent and harmonized expert healthfulness ratings, consumer misalignment and mispe

Emerging perspectives: the interplay of taste perception and oral microbiota composition in dietary preferences and obesity.

Recent advancements in sensory research have brought to light the intricate relationship between taste perception and the oral microbiota, prompting investigations into their influence on human health, particularly in the context of dietary preferences and obesity. This review aims to update the current understanding of how oral microbiota influence taste perception and dietary choices, elucidating shared metabolic pathways between food processing and oral bacteria. Further, this review outlines the mechanisms underlying taste perception, emphasising the role of taste receptors and taste buds

Food selection in a buffet scenario by persons in recovery from substance use disorder: Testing a parallel mediation model including impulsivity, food craving, and breadth of drug use.

Elevated food cravings and higher food consumption and body weight have been reported in studies of people in recovery from substance use disorder (SUD). In a previous study, SUD recovery status predicted the energy from selected food images in a virtual buffet meal, most strongly in those with high reward responsiveness. The present study was conducted to determine which psychological variables might mediate the relationship between SUD recovery status and food selection and to replicate the finding that reward responsiveness moderated this relationship. In an online study, 216 women and men

Interventions for Picky Eaters among Typically Developed Children-A Scoping Review.

Picky eating in children is often a major source of concern for many parents and caregivers. Picky eaters (PEs) consume limited foods, demonstrate food aversion, and have a limited food repertoire, which hinders their growth and health. These behaviours are common in children with special health care needs despite the rise in typically developing children. This leads to less attention being given to intervention programmes for typically developing children. Therefore, this scoping review aims to investigate the key concept of an existing intervention programme for PE among typically developing

Food Selectivity and Its Implications Associated with Gastrointestinal Disorders in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Food selectivity (FS) in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) is common, and its impact on a nutritional level is known. However, the etiology of gastrointestinal disorders (GID) related to alterations in the intestinal microbiota in children with ASD remains unclear. This article provides a narrative review of the literature on FS from the last 15 years, and its relationship with GID in children with ASD. Sensory aversion in ASD leads to food elimination, based on consistencies, preferences, and other sensory issues. The restriction of food groups that modulate the gut microbiota, su

Interventions for Increasing Acceptance of New Foods Among Children and Adults with Developmental Disorders: A Systematic Review.

People with developmental disorders (DD) often display high levels of selective eating, which can result in micronutrient deficiencies. It is therefore essential to explore ways to increase dietary variety in this population. To identify different types of interventions promoting increased acceptance of new foods or dietary variety for DD populations and to determine their effectiveness. Thirty-six studies met criteria for inclusion in the review. Twenty-two types of intervention were identified with 34 studies being reported as effective and 33 of these incorporating components drawn from lea

From biology to management of Savi's pine vole (Microtus savii).

Savi's pine vole (Microtus savii) is a rodent species of the Cricetidae family, inhabiting southern European agroecosystems. It is considered to be the main cause of rodent-attributed damage in Italy. To achieve an effective management, detailed knowledge of this species is needed. However, the available information about this species is fragmentary and incomplete. In this paper, the existing knowledge of Savi's pine vole taxonomy, reproduction, population dynamics, habitat and food preferences is reviewed in order to organise available information and identify priority areas of future researc…

Bitter-sweet processing in larval Drosophila.

"Sweet-" and "bitter-" tasting substances distinctively support attractive and aversive choice behavior, respectively, and therefore are thought to be processed by distinct pathways. Interestingly, electrophysiological recordings in adult Drosophila suggest that bitter and salty tastants, in addition to activating bitter, salt, or bitter/salt sensory neurons, can also inhibit sweet-sensory neurons. However, the behavioral significance of such a potential for combinatorial coding is little understood. Using larval Drosophila as a study case, we find that the preference towards fructose is inhib

Feeding preference of Macrolophus caliginosus (Heteroptera: Miridae) on Bemisia tabaci and Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae).

A study of predation choices of Macrolophus caliginosus Wagner (Heteroptera: Miridae) late instars and adults, when offered various developmental stages (eggs and nymphs) of the recently established whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae), was made based on two preference indices. In addition, prey choices of late instars when presented with three ratios of Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae) and B. tabaci at a similar developmental stage (eggs, young or late instars) were assessed. M. caliginosus preferred older nymphs of B. tabaci than any other

Cotton boll age influences feeding preference by brown stink bug (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae).

Cotton plants were infested with brown stink bug, Euschistus servus (Say), to define cotton boll age classes (based on heat unit accumulation beyond anthesis) that are most frequently injured during each of the initial 5 wk of flowering. Bolls from each week were grouped into discrete age classes and evaluated for the presence of stink bug injury. Brown stink bug injured significantly more bolls of age class B (approximately 165-336 heat units), age class C (approximately 330-504 heat units), and age class D (approximately 495-672 heat units) during the initial 3 wk in both years and in week 5

The relationship between susceptibility to nausea and vomiting and the possession of conditioned food aversions.

Because nausea and vomiting play an important role in the formation of conditioned food aversions, individual differences in susceptibility to nausea and vomiting may contribute to interindividual variation in conditioned food aversion acquisition. Two surveys reveal that, among female participants, self-reported motion sickness susceptibility is positively correlated with the number of conditioned food aversions possessed, but no such correlation appears among male participants.

Restaurant-based intervention to facilitate healthy eating choices and the identification of allergenic foods at a family-oriented resort and a campground.

BACKGROUND: Restaurant-based interventions can be an enjoyable way to encourage healthier eating choices by all members of a family. Thus, the principal aims of this study were a) to promote healthy diets by increasing healthy food offerings and b) to increase the number of foods offered specifically as gluten-free and lactose-free and to inform patrons by including nutritional and allergen information that complies with Regulation 1169/2011 regarding the food served in restaurants, takeaways and snack bars. METHODS: A restaurant-based intervention was implemented at 16 food establishments at

Physical stability assessment and sensory optimization of a dairy-free emulsion using response surface methodology.

Desserts made with soy cream, which are oil-in-water emulsions, are widely consumed by lactose-intolerant individuals in Brazil. In this regard, this study aimed at using response surface methodology (RSM) to optimize the sensory attributes of a soy-based emulsion over a range of pink guava juice (GJ: 22% to 32%) and soy protein (SP: 1% to 3%). WHC and backscattering were analyzed after 72 h of storage at 7 degrees C. Furthermore, a rating test was performed to determine the degree of liking of color, taste, creaminess, appearance, and overall acceptability. The data showed that the samples we

What unhealthy food and beverage advertisements appeal to- and promote obesity amongst- adolescent children in urban South Africa?

Unhealthy food and beverage marketing is harmful to all children because it generates preferences for foods associated with obesity. Our aim was to expand knowledge about the appeal of food advertising to urban-dwelling South African teenage children. We asked 49 boys and girls aged 14-16-years-old, from three Johannesburg high schools, about food advertisements that appealed to them and their peers in six same-gender focus group discussions. We conducted thematic analysis of the discussions and content analysis of 55 advertisements that participants identified as appealing. Classic features o
