Transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) youth may present to the emergency department with a range of medical problems and health concerns. Some of these may be directly related to their gender identity, but the vast majority are not. While gender diversity is not considered a mental illness, TGD youth are at increased risk for suicide, anxiety, depression, and other psychological conditions, as well as family rejection, homelessness, food insecurity, and poverty. Lack of knowledge and cultural competency among emergency clinicians can create a barrier to effective care. This issue will review re

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic presented unprecedented complexity for health care seeking globally. Little is known on how people living with HIV (PLHIV) and other co-morbidities including hypertension accessed healthcare services in resource limited settings like Uganda. Therefore, we explored qualitatively how the COVID-19 pandemic which was characterized by travel restrictions, social distancing requirements, and a heightened COVID-19 response impacted health care seeking for PLHIV and health care provision by providers in this context. We explored experiences of both PLHIV with hyperten

A survey was carried out in five rural communities that enjoy agricultural extension services from the University of Agriculture Abeokuta. Questionnaires and focus group discussions (FGDs) were used to assess perceptions and home management practices of malaria infection. The inhabitants considered malaria (which they refer to as "Iba Otutu") has the least dangerous of other types of common fever such as yellow fever and typhoid fever. A vast majority of the respondents (73%) attributed malaria infection to doing of strenuous jobs in the hot sun, while only 11.7% attributed it to mosquito bite

BACKGROUND: Oesophageal soft food bolus obstruction is a common presentation to emergency departments. Often these patients are given medication with little evidence of efficacy. Although many cases self-resolve, some require removal of the obstruction. Delay in removal can lead to complications such as oesophageal perforation and mediastinitis. Traditionally, removal was performed by ENT surgeons using rigid oesophagoscopy, but oesophago-gastro duodenoscopy offers a safer alternative that does not require a general anaesthetic.

BACKGROUND: Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is an increasingly common cause of food impaction.
AIMS: This study aims to provide a nationwide analysis of food impaction in patients with or without EoE diagnosis, concentrating on patient demographics, interventions, outcomes, and development of predictive machine-learning models.
METHODS: A retrospective assessment was conducted using Nationwide Emergency Department Sample data from January 1, 2018, to December 31, 2019. We compared patients with food impaction with an associated EoE diagnosis to those without EoE and derived machine-learning m

The various physician, patient, and pharmacy requirements for participation in the System for Thalidomide Education and Prescribing Safety (S.T.E.P.S.) program and procedures that institutions may implement in order to comply with these requirements are described. In 1998, FDA approved the marketing of thalidomide (Thalomid, Celgene). Because of the drug's known teratogenic effects, FDA tightly controls the distribution of thalidomide in the United States. To comply with FDA requirements, Celgene developed the S.T.E.P.S. oversight program, which includes registration of thalidomide prescribers

Pet treats and pet food can be contaminated with Salmonella and other pathogens, though they are infrequently implicated as the source of human outbreaks. In 2013, the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services investigated a cluster of Salmonella Typhimurium infections associated with contaminated locally made pet treats. Case-patients were interviewed with standardized questionnaires to assess food, animal, and social histories. Laboratory and environmental investigations were conducted, including testing of clinical specimens, implicated product, and environmental swabs. Between

Cleaning and disinfecting products consisting of a mixture of hydrogen peroxide (HP), peracetic acid (PAA), and acetic acid (AA) are widely used as sporicidal agents in health care, childcare, agricultural, food service, and food production industries. HP and PAA are strong oxidants and their mixture is a recognized asthmagen. However, few exposure assessment studies to date have measured HP, PAA, and AA in a health care setting. In 2015, we performed a health and exposure assessment at a hospital where a new sporicidal product, consisting of HP, PAA, and AA was introduced 16 months prior. We

In Palestine, particularly the Gaza Strip, the ongoing military aggression has triggered a complex health crisis that extends beyond visible injuries and hospital admissions. The destruction of healthcare infrastructure, loss of medical personnel, and shortages of essential supplies have exacerbated numerous underreported health challenges. Drawing upon reports from WHO and UN agencies, as well as peer-reviewed scientific literature, this perspective highlights the obscured morbidities of war, including disrupted immunization programs, menstrual supply insecurity, reproductive health complicat

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Many professional organizations recently recommended inpatient screening for social risks. Although prior studies have explored social risk screening rates in children's hospitals, many excluded community hospitals and lacked detail on screening practices. We aimed to describe national social risk screening and referral practices among hospitals caring for children.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey (August 2023-November 2023) through the Pediatric Research in Inpatient Settings Network. One clinical leader per institution was surveyed on inpatient social r

BACKGROUND: Acute infectious gastroenteritis causes substantial morbidity and economic loss.
OBJECTIVE: The aetiology, epidemiology, and clinical features of acute viral gastroenteritis outbreaks reported during 1 year in Catalonia were investigated.
STUDY DESIGN: This was a population-based study in which enzyme immunoassay and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) techniques were used to determine the presence of virus in stool specimens from outbreaks clinically and epidemiologically compatible with a viral aetiology and negative for bacteria, parasites and toxins.

BACKGROUND: Aboriginal people in rural and remote areas of the Northern Territory of Australia have suffered longstanding issues of homelessness and profound health and social inequities. The town and region of Katherine are particularly impacted by such inequities and have the highest rates of homelessness in Australia, composed almost entirely of Aboriginal people who represent 51% of the total population of 24,000 people. The region is serviced by a 60-bed hospital, and a small cohort of frequent attenders (FAs) represent 11% of the Emergency Department (ED) case load. The vast majority of

Background: Emergency department (ED) visits related to substance use are common. ED patients also have high levels of health-related material needs (HRMNs), such as homelessness and food insecurity. However, little research has examined the intersection between ED patient HRMNs and substance use. Methods: We surveyed a random sample of public hospital ED patients. Surveys included validated single-item screeners for unhealthy alcohol and any drug use and questions on self-reported past-year material needs. We compared individual HRMNs and cumulative number of HRMNs by substance use screening

BACKGROUND: Social care integration refers to the incorporation of activities into health systems that assist patients with health-related social needs (HRSNs) that negatively impact the health outcomes of their patients, such as food insecurity or homelessness. Social care integration initiatives are becoming more common. The COVID-19 pandemic strained health systems while simultaneously increasing levels of unmet social needs.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on established social care delivery in a primary care setting.
DESIGN: We used qualitative semi-structure

INTRODUCTION: During COVID-19 (a coronavirus infection) pandemic, hotels in Japan housed mildly ill patients due to the shortage of hospital beds. However, reports indicated the meals were of poor nutritional value. Hotel staff were inexperienced in preparing nutritionally balanced meals for convalescents. Hence, this study aimed to develop a model menu that considers both nutritional balance and employees' responsibility. The case study was conducted of Hotel B in Tokyo, which operated as a hotel quarantine facility.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated the hotel's menu, developed a model men

A follow-up study was conducted on the infant and child-feeding programs to determine the prevalence of protein and calorie malnutrition among preschool Navajo Indian children. These programs were introduced on the reservation in 1968. The numbers of patients admitted to the Public Health Service Indian Hospital, in Tuba City, Arizona, with deficits in weight for their chronological ages, marasmus, and kwashiorkor were compared during two 5-year-periods, 1963 to 1967 and 1969 to 1973. The results show an 18% reduction in the total number of patients under 5 years of age admitted to the hospita

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to develop a multisource surveillance system for work-related burns.
METHODS: For 2009, records about work-related burns were obtained from Michigan's 134 hospitals, the Workers' Compensation Agency, the state's sole Poison Control Center, and death certificates. Companies where the most severe burns occurred were referred to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
RESULTS: There were 1461 work-related burns in 2009. Sixty-six percent of the burns were reported in male workers and 85.3% in whites. One third of the individuals sustained bur

BACKGROUND: Enteric pathogens are an important cause of illness, however, little is known about their community-level risk factors (e.g., socioeconomic, cultural and physical environmental conditions) in the Northwest Territories (NWT) of Canada. The objective of this study was to undertake ecological (group-level) analyses by combining two existing data sources to examine potential community-level risk factors for campylobacteriosis, giardiasis and salmonellosis, which are three notifiable (mandatory reporting to public health authorities at the time of diagnosis) enteric infections.

Recent studies have again shown the beneficial effects of breast-feeding in preventing morbidity and mortality from diarrhoea in infants. A case-control study in Brazil has shown that young infants who are not breast-fed have a 25-time greater risk of dying of diarrhoea than those who are exclusively breast-fed. A longitudinal study in the urban slums of Lima, Peru found that exclusively breast-fed infants have a reduced risk of diarrhoeal morbidity when compared with infants receiving only water in addition to breast-milk. Both these studies, along with numerous others in developing countries
