Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate and classify the types and incidences of foot deformities in patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). Methods: A cross-sectional study with convenience sample was obtained of 220 patients with foot pain and RA classification criteria (approved by the American College of Rheumatology and the European League against Rheumatism in 2010). A series of outcomes were assessed to measure the morphological characteristics of the feet. The Foot Posture Index (FPI), the Manchester Scale of Hallux Valgus and the Nijmegen classification of forefoot disorders

Triple arthrodesis is a common procedure in foot and ankle surgery. It has a significant role in treating hind foot osteoarthrosis and deformity. We describe a new arthroscopic approach of triple arthrodesis. Through carefully planned portal placement of midtarsal joint arthroscopy, together with subtalar arthroscopy, we can denude articular cartilage of the 3 joints with minimal resection of subchondral bone. The 3 joints are put into the desired position and fixed with cannulated screws. This has the potential advantage of minimal bone removal and better fusion surface preparation, especiall

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis (OA) affecting the knee or hip is highly prevalent in the general population and has associated high disease burden. Early identification of modifiable risk factors that prevent, limit, or resolve disease symptoms is critical. Foot pain may represent a potentially modifiable factor however little is known about the prevalence of foot pain in people with knee or hip OA nor whether foot pain is associated with clinical characteristics. The main aim of this study was therefore to determine the prevalence of foot pain in people with knee or hip OA attending an education

Any surgical treatment of spastic foot deformities must be preceded by an exact preoperative analysis of every aspect of the deformity and its functional consequences. The goals of surgical treatment are correction of the deformity, reestablishment of the stability of the foot and preservation of functionally important ranges of motion and muscle strength. These goals can usually be achieved only by a package of several simultaneous procedures. The foot must never be treated in isolation. Proximal joints have to be considered as well as the opposite side, because a plantigrade position of the

In November 1883, Jean-Martin Charcot and Charles Féré reported on bone and joint disease of the foot in cases of tabes dorsalis, and referred to the condition as 'pied tabétique'--a disabling neuropathic osteoarthropathy that we usually now refer to as the Charcot foot. Charcot had originally described neuropathic osteoarthropathy in more proximal joints in 1868, and in his 1883 paper with Féré stated that involvement of the short bones and small joints of the foot had not yet been described. They emphasised in the paper that one of their cases was the first ever observed, two years earlier,

Synovial chondromatosis (SC) is a benign proliferative process of synovial tissue creating multiple cartilaginous nodules in joints. It most commonly occurs in the large joints of the knee, hip, and shoulder, uncommonly in the small joints of the hand and foot, and only rarely in the tenosynovial membrane of tendon sheath, termed tenosynovial chondromatosis (TC). Unlike SC, TC predisposes to the foot or hand. The rarity and unfamiliarity of imagers with TC, as well as the variability of its histologic features often lead to an erroneous diagnosis of extraskeletal chondroma or even chondrosarco

Posttraumatic foot deformities requiring correction result from overlooked or inadequately treated injuries and, on the other hand, from protracted courses because of avascular necrosis, non-union or infection after primary surgery. To achieve a maximum benefit, corrective surgery has to be carried out early before arthritic involvement of adjacent joint becomes evident. As salvage procedures, arthrodeses should be restricted to the affected joints. Especially talus malunion and non-union should be corrected with preservation of the joints whenever possible to achieve favourable functional out

INTRODUCTION: Charcot arthropathy is a progressive disorder of the ankle and foot joints that can lead to foot deformity and instability. Surgical intervention is often necessary for deformity and ulcer management during the chronic phase. The device used for arthrodesis remains a challenge.
METHODS: This clinical trial study included diabetic patients aged 40 years or older with Charcot foot. Lateral approach with lateral malleolar osteotomy was used to access the ankle joints and remove the cartilage. A small incision was made on the plantar aspect of the foot to pass an appropriately sized…

This paper reviews how multifunctioning joints produce highly agile limbs in animals with lessons for robotics. One of the key reasons why animals are so fast and agile is that they have multifunctioning joints in their limbs. The multifunctioning joints lead to a high degree of compactness which then leads to a host of benefits such as low mass, low moment of inertia and low drag. This paper presents three case studies of multifunctioning joints-the human wrist joint, knee joint and foot joints-in order to identify how multifunctioning is achieved and what lessons can be learned for robotics.…

Hinged ankle-foot orthoses are prescribed routinely for the treatment of ankle joint deficits, despite the conflicting outcomes and the little evidence on their functional efficacy. In particular, the axis of rotation of the hinge is positioned disregarding the physiological position and orientation. A multi-segment model was utilized to assess in vivo the effect of different positions for this axis on the kinematics of foot joints. A special custom-made hinged orthosis was manufactured via standard procedures for a young healthy volunteer. Four locations for the mechanical axis were obtained …

BACKGROUND: First metatarsophalangeal joint arthrodesis is a reliable treatment for painful end-stage degenerative, inflammatory, and post-traumatic conditions and severe deformities of the first ray. Although long-term functional outcomes are well documented, the incidence and relevance of degenerative changes in adjacent joints of the medial column after first metatarsophalangeal joint (MTP1) fusion remain uncertain.
METHODS: This exploratory single-center follow-up study included patients who underwent isolated MTP1 arthrodesis between 2012 and 2018. Preoperative and final follow-up weight

The proper management of acquired flatfoot deformity requires obtaining a careful patient history and physical examination of the foot, ankle, and lower extremity. Accurate assessment of foot flexibility and localization of pain will aid in decision making. Nonsurgical management may not be successful in patients with advanced disease, particularly with the development of degenerative changes. Surgical management of advanced acquired adult flatfoot deformity (stages III and IV) is indicated with failure of nonsurgical management and consists primarily of arthrodesis for the foot component of t

Tumoral calcinosis is a rare disorder defined as the development of periarticular calcified masses, typically surrounding large joints, although they may occur in the foot. We present a case of a patient with systemic tumoral calcinosis with lesions in both shoulders and wrists and a relatively large lesion in the right foot presenting with foot pain.

Ten adolescent patients with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (12 feet) were evaluated an average of 7 years, 7 months following triple arthrodesis (TA) for the treatment of cavovarus deformity. The TA was the primary or index bone procedure. At follow-up, five feet were plantigrade, asymptomatic, and radiographically fused at all three joints. Three feet were plantigrade and asymptomatic, but two had talonavicular pseudarthrosis and one had calcaneocuboid pseudarthrosis. Three feet were radiographically fused at all three joints, but in nonplantigrade positions and symptomatic. One foot required a

Posttraumatic arthritis of the joint components of the hind foot is typically linked with hind foot deformity and involvement of the neighbouring joint. The principal goals of any hind foot reconstruction are to achieve a quasi-anatomical reconstruction of the geometry and a stable and plantigrade foot position as a prerequisite for acceptable gait function, and an overall satisfactory result for the patient. Profound knowledge of the functions of the ankle-hind foot complex is the basis for the development of a valid therapeutic strategy. Any surgical reconstruction has to consider previous i

BACKGROUND: The aim of this case study was to identify the effect of a powered stance control knee ankle foot orthosis on the kinematics and temporospatial parameters of walking by a person with poliomyelitis when compared to a knee ankle foot orthosis.
CASE DESCRIPTION AND METHODS: A knee ankle foot orthosis was initially manufactured by incorporating drop lock knee joints and custom molded ankle foot orthoses and fitted to a person with poliomyelitis. The orthosis was then adapted by adding electrically activated powered knee joints to provide knee extension torque during stance and also fl

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the existence of distinct foot osteoarthritis (OA) phenotypes based on pattern of joint involvement and comparative symptom and risk profiles.
METHODS: Participants ages ≥50 years reporting foot pain in the previous year were drawn from a population-based cohort. Radiographs were scored for OA in the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint, first and second cuneometatarsal, navicular first cuneiform, and talonavicular joints according to a published atlas. Chi-square tests established clustering, and odds ratios (ORs) examined symmetry and pairwise associations of radi

Tumoral calcinosis is an uncommon disorder and characterized by development of calcified masses within the soft tissues near the large joints such as the hip, elbow, and shoulder and rarely occurs in the foot. We report a case of tumoral calcinosis at the first meta-tarso-phalangeal (MTP) joint of foot with hallux valgus deformity associated with bunion which required resection. Surgical excision of the calcific mass alone, without surgery to the minimal hallux valgus, resulted in resolution of symptoms, without recurrence of the lesion. Subsequently, speculative etiology, differential diagnos
