INTRODUCTION: Hanging is defined as a form of asphyxia caused by the suspension of the body with a ligature around the neck, where the constriction is generated by the body's own weight. The aim of this study is to examine autopsy findings in hanging cases among children, a rare cause of death in this age group, using data collected from a forensic autopsy center.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted by reviewing electronic autopsy reports of pediatric cases referred to the Morgue Department between January 1, 2012, and December 31, 2021, for the determination of the

MEK inhibitors (MEKi) PD0325901 and AZD6244 (Selumetinib) are drugs currently under clinical investigation for cancer treatment, however the Ras-MAPK pathway is also an important mediator of normal bone cell differentiation and function. In this study we examined the effects of these compounds on endochondral processes using both in vitro and in vivo models. Treatment with PD0325901 or AZD6244 significantly increased Runx2 and Alkaline phosphate gene expression in calvarial osteoblasts and decreased TRAP+ cells in induced osteoclast cultures. To test the effects of these drugs on bone healing,

PURPOSE: Phalangeal fractures of the hand are the second most common upper-extremity fracture in the United States with a fracture incidence of 130/100,000 persons. Numerous studies have reported on the biomechanical efficacy of intramedullary (IM) hand nail fixation of the phalanges, and the large volume of literature indicates the recent increased utilization of IM hand nails. When using IM fixation, the implant must penetrate the articular cartilage during insertion. This study seeks to quantify the percentage of cartilage involvement created by anterograde and retrograde intramedullary fix

The effect of direct electric current (5 muamp) on mesenchymal cell differentiation into cartilage was investigated in explants of fetal rat muscle and bone matrix gelatin. In this system, chondrogenesis in vitro corresponds in developmental potential to osteogenesis in vivo. Application of electric current inhibited differentiation of muscle derived mesenchymal cells, but enhanced proliferation of differentiated chondrocytes and formation of cartilage at the cathode region, and had no effect on mature hypertrophic chondrocytes. Application of electric current may be contraindicated in fractur

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Zygomaticomaxillary (ZMC) fractures are common, often resulting from traffic accidents, and account for 17 % of facial fractures. These fractures can lead to issues such as enophthalmos, flattened cheeks, diplopia, maxillary hypoesthesia. If the reduction is inadequate to restore facial structure, long term-functional and aesthetic complications may arise. In such cases a computed tomography (CT) scan with 3-dimensional (3D) reconstruction is valuable to assessing the fracture and planning surgery, with current technological advancements, 3D printing can now be uti

Fractures of the laryngohyoid complex are classically associated with deaths due to strangulation. Recent studies, however, indicate the possible presence of such fractures in fatal falls. The primary focus of this systematic review is to analyze the characteristics of laryngohyoid fractures in the context of falls to aid in a more accurate interpretation of autopsy findings. Search for relevant literature occurred on PubMed on the 26th of October 2022, and Embase and Web of Science on the 5th of November 2022. Inclusion criteria included being a primary study, published in English, involving

BACKGROUND: The treatment procedure for intracapsular condylar fractures (ICF) is still being debated. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disc is a key factor for treating ICF. The study aims to investigate the changes in TMJ disc status and condylar cartilage regeneration following ICF in a rabbit model, to assist in planning treatment.
METHODS: Adolescent and adult rabbits received surgery on the left TMJs: (1) ICF with anterior disc displacement, (2) ICF with the removal of the ICF segment and disc. The animals were euthanized immediately, and at 4, 8, and 12 weeks after surgery. Their left

BACKGROUND: Acute traumatic injuries of the triradiate cartilage are very rare in children and usually result from high-energy trauma associated with other pelvic injuries. Only two sports-related cases of complete injuries of the triradiate cartilage have been reported to date.
CASE PRESENTATION: We herein describe the first case of a partial injury of the triradiate cartilage in a 14-year-old athlete. The patient presented with sudden-onset hip pain and moderate functional impairment. The fracture was confined to the ilioischial synchondrosis, while the remaining triradiate cartilage and th

More children are participating in organized and recreational athletics at a younger age. It has been well documented that increased athletic specialization and year-round activities have resulted in higher incidences of overuse injuries, including stress fractures and stress reactions. Initially, stress fractures can be radiographically occult. Continued stress on the injured bone or cartilage can lead to progressive radiographic changes. Because of the prevalence of these injuries, both orthopedic surgeons and radiologists should be aware of the radiographic and magnetic resonance imaging (M

Localized inflammation is accompanied by the diabetic-induced fracture. The present study aims to investigate the therapeutic effects of glyburide, an NLRP3 inflammasome inhibitor, in a diabetic-induced fracture model. An animal model of diabetic-induced fracture was established and the mice were administrated with metformin or glyburide for 3 weeks. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and Western blotting were used to evaluate the relative expressions of IFN-γ, TNF-α, and IL-6. Micro-computed tomography (μCT) scanning was applied to evaluate bone callus formation. Histopathology exa

Two patients with rapidly progressive chondrolysis of the hip are reported. Immunofluorescent staining showed deposits of immunoglobulins and complement components in the synovium and the remaining femoral head cartilage. Seven patients with osteoarthritis of the hip and knee, or femoral neck fractures, were used as controls and all had a negative immunofluorescent staining reaction in the synovium. We suggest that an autoimmune reaction against articular cartilage antigens may play a role in the development of chondrolysis.

Because the capacity of articular cartilage for repair is limited, defects are a major clinical problem, and there is at present no satisfactory clinical technique to regenerate cartilage defects. Current clinical practice involves the bone stimulation technique, which breaks subchondral bone to facilitate cartilage repair from bone marrow derived cells and cytokines. This consists of multiple perforations, abrasions, and micro-fractures. However, with this procedure, cartilage defects are repaired with fibrocartilage, which is known to be biochemically and biomechanically different from norma

After the treatment of patella fractures the only way to evaluate healing at the articular surface before implant removal is through arthroscopy. The purpose of this study was to examine the healing potential of the cartilage. Arthroscopy was performed in 18 patients at the time of implant removal. The mean age of the patients was 42.1 years. The time elapsed from the index surgery to the arthroscopy and implant removal surgery was 12.9 months. During the arthroscopy, we inspected articular step-off, cartilage loss, and joint surface irregularities. Cartilage irregularities were observed in 13

The study of the cartilage is relatively easy with modern imaging. If the interpretation of MRI cartilage remains difficult arthro-CT images are easy to obtain. Arthro-CT is much preferable to simple arthrography. These two steps are in fact complementary: the global study of the joint is made with arthrography while the accurate assessment of cartilage is obtained with thin CT native slices acquired in an adapted plane and completed with reformatted images. The detection of small lesions, such as a faint thinning of the cartilage, or a focal fissure is only possible with a long and meticulous

PURPOSE: The resection of the humeral head is normally carried out only with respect to four-part and dislocation fractures in elderly patients. The purpose of this study was to examine whether there is a correlation between the clinical results and the MRI findings.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 8 patients underwent clinical and MR examination two to 6 years after resection.
RESULTS: A cartilage-like tissue formation between the remaining humeral head and the glenoid fossa, with signal intensities comparable to hyalin cartilage was found in all patients.
CONCLUSION: The good functional results fol
