Scaling the invisible wall: Molecular acclimation of a salinity-tolerant diatom to freshwater.

In aquatic ecosystems, marine and freshwater environments are separated by steep salinity gradients. The osmotic stress induced by this 'invisible wall' forms an insurmountable barrier for many aquatic lifeforms, including bacteria, algae and animals. Because the osmotic differences when transiting a salinity divide are so hard to overcome, most species have adapted exclusively to a marine or a freshwater lifestyle. A major consequence of this physiological specialization into marine and freshwater organisms is that transitions are relatively rare, impeding regular contact and colonization. Wh

Historical DNA solves century-old mystery on sessility in freshwater gastropods.

Extinction rates are increasing unabatedly but resources available for conservation action are limited. Therefore, some conservationists are pushing for ecology- and evolution-based conservation choices, prioritizing taxa with phylogenetic and trait-based originality. Extinction of original taxa may result in a disproportionate loss of evolutionary innovations and potentially prevent transformative changes in living systems. Here, we generated historical DNA data from an almost 120-year-old syntype of the enigmatic sessile snail Helicostoa sinensis from the Three Gorges region of the Yangtze R

Monsoonal wet season influences the migration tendency of a catadromous fish (barramundi Lates calcarifer).

Many animals exhibit partial migration, which occurs when populations contain coexisting contingents of migratory and resident individuals. This individual-level variation in migration behaviour may drive differences in growth, age at maturity and survival. Therefore, partial migration is widely considered to play a key role in shaping population demography. Otolith chemistry and microstructural analysis were used to identify the environmental- and individual-specific factors that influence migratory behaviour in the facultatively catadromous barramundi (Lates calcarifer) at two distinct life

Microplastics generated from a biodegradable plastic in freshwater and seawater.

Biodegradable polymers have been regarded as a promising solution to tackle the pollutions caused by the wide use of conventional polymers. However, during the biodegradation process, the material fragmentation leads to microplastics. In this work, the formation of microplastics from biodegradable poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) in different aquatic environments was investigated and compared with the common non-biodegradable low-density polyethylene (LDPE). The results showed that a much larger quantity of plastic fragments/particles were formed in all aquatic environments from

Evaluation of growth and biochemical responses of freshwater microalgae Chlorella vulgaris due to exposure and uptake of sulfonamides and copper.

Sulfonamides (SAs) and heavy metals are frequently detected together in livestock wastewater. In this study, evaluations regarding their potentially adverse effects on microalgae and according removals were investigated. Results showed that the growth of C. vulgaris was inhibited by SAs and Cu. There was an obvious recovery period in photosynthetic activity (Fv/Fm), indicating that the damage to the photosystem of microalgae was reversible. The co-existence of SAs and Cu significantly affected the biochemical characteristics, including the activities of antioxidant enzyme and the contents of p

Novel Insights into Dissolved Organic Matter Processing Pathways in a Coastal Confined Aquifer System with the Highest Known Concentration of Geogenic Ammonium.

High levels of geogenic ammonium in groundwater is a highly neglected nitrogen pool in coastal aquatic systems. Although organic matter (OM) mineralization is known to significantly influence geogenic ammonium enrichment, the detailed mechanism underlying ammonium enrichment based on dissolved organic matter (DOM) characterization in coastal aquifer systems remains unclear. In this study, we characterized the optical and molecular signatures of DOM coupled with hydrogeochemistry and multiple isotopes (H/O/C/N) to elucidate in detail the mechanisms underlying the anomalously high ammonium in th

Iberian Distribution of the Freshwater Snail Genus Bithynia Leach, 1818 (Mollusca: Truncatelloidea), Vector of Opisthorchiasis and Metorchiasis.

BACKGROUND: Opisthorchis felineus and Metorchis bilis are trematodes that cause opisthorchiasis and metorchiasis, respectively. The freshwater snails Bithynia hispanica and B. tentaculata are the respective intermediate hosts for these parasites in the Iberian Peninsula, where both parasites are present. METHODS: To study the distribution of these snail species, an exhaustive literature review and revision of museum collections was performed. RESULTS: A total of 370 localities were compiled and mapped. B. tentaculata were found throughout the Iberian Peninsula, both in Spain and Portugal, wh

Energy recovery through reverse electrodialysis: Harnessing the salinity gradient from the flushing of human urine.

Urine dilution is often performed to avoid clogging or scaling of pipes, which occurs due to urine's Ca2+ and Mg2+ precipitating at the alkaline conditions created by ureolysis. The large salinity gradient between urine and flushing water is, theoretically, a source of potential energy which is currently unexploited. As such, this work explored the use of a compact reverse electrodialysis (RED) system to convert the chemical potential energy of urine dilution into electric energy. Urine' composition and ureolysis state as well as solution pumping costs were all taken into account. Despite havi

A genetically distinct Schistosoma from Radix luteola from Nepal related to Schistosoma turkestanicum: A phylogenetic study of schistosome and snail host.

During a survey of freshwater snails in the Terai region of southern Nepal, 16 of 2588 specimens of Radix luteola from 4 different habitats were found to be shedding schistosome cercariae. None of the 1411 specimens of Radix acuminata we collected were positive for schistosomes. Analysis of 28S, cox1, 16S and 12S sequences indicated that all the R. luteola-derived schistosomes were genetically very similar to one another and, although unambiguously grouping most closely to the widespread Asian species Schistosoma turkestanicum, were clearly genetically distinct from it. Free-living amoebae and their associated bacteria in Austrian cooling towers: a 1-year routine screening.

Free-living amoebae (FLA) are widely spread in the environment and known to cause rare but often serious infections. Besides this, FLA may serve as vehicles for bacterial pathogens. In particular, Legionella pneumophila is known to replicate within FLA thereby also gaining enhanced infectivity. Cooling towers have been the source of outbreaks of Legionnaires' disease in the past and are thus usually screened for legionellae on a routine basis, not considering, however, FLA and their vehicle function. The aim of this study was to incorporate a screening system for host amoebae into a Legionella

Distinct optical chemistry of dissolved organic matter in urban pond ecosystems.

Urbanization has the potential to dramatically alter the biogeochemistry of receiving freshwater ecosystems. We examined the optical chemistry of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in forty-five urban ponds across southern Ontario, Canada to examine whether optical characteristics in these relatively new ecosystems are distinct from other freshwater systems. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations ranged from 2 to 16 mg C L(-1) across the ponds with an average value of 5.3 mg C L(-1). Excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectroscopy and parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) modelling showed urban

The dwarf river crab Liberonautes latidactylus nanoides Cumberlidge & Sachs, 1989, from Liberia--a new second intermediate host of Paragonimus uterobilateralis.

Large populations of the dwarf river crab Liberonautes latidactylus nanoides Cumberlidge & Sachs, 1989, collected from the St. Paul river at the Haindi/Mauwa focus of paragonimiasis in Liberia were examined for parasitization by the human lung fluke, Paragonimus uterobilateralis. Four specimens out of 763 L. l. nanoides proved to be positive for P. uterobilateralis (0.52%), and each of these specimens contained only 1 metacercaria. The dwarf river crab forms the basis of a seasonal commercial fishery in Liberia, and it is sold for human consumption in rural markets. However, the low levels of

Plastic-algae interactions in freshwater and marine systems: mechanisms, evidence and prospects for bioremediation.

Plastic pollution is among this century's defining environmental problems, and aquatic systems carry a disproportionate share. As polymers fragment into microplastics and nanoplastics they disperse through rivers, lakes and oceans, harming organisms and entering food webs. Algae have attracted growing attention as a biological complement to physical and chemical clean-up. This review synthesises peer-reviewed studies published between 2015 and 2026 on interactions between plastics and freshwater and marine algae. We examine eukaryotic microalgae from freshwater (Chlorella, Scenedesmus, Coccomy

Metagenomics Reveals Microbial Community Shifts Associated With Contrasting Anthropogenic Impacts in Freshwater Sources of A Coastal Protected Area in Southeastern Brazil.

This study aimed to characterize freshwater microbial communities, environmental drivers, and anthropogenic impact patterns across three sites on Marambaia Island (southeastern Brazil) using metagenomics. Samples collected from freshwater sources used for human consumption were processed through concentration, nucleic acid extraction, and sequencing on the Illumina NextSeq 2000 platform. A total of 67.2 million reads were assembled into 89,230 bacterial contigs, mostly attributed to Gammaproteobacteria, Alphaproteobacteria, and Betaproteobacteria. Sites under lower anthropogenic influence exhi

Genomic diversity and environmental factors associated with Listeria monocytogenes presence in surface water.

This study aimed to detect and characterize Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) in irrigation water to help reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses. Over nearly a year, water samples (n = 1050) were collected monthly from 120 locations across four Chilean watersheds to assess the prevalence and genetic diversity of the pathogen. The average detection of L. monocytogenes across all watersheds ranged from 15 % to 25 %, underscoring the variability in L. monocytogenes contamination at various sites. Water type, collection month, watershed, pH and season were the primary determinants of the l

Multiple biological responses and transcriptome plasticity of the model unicellular eukaryote paramecium for cadmium toxicity aggravated by freshwater acidification.

Cadmium (Cd) pollution is a widespread threat to aquatic life, and ongoing freshwater acidification (FA) can be expected to interact with Cd compounds to disrupt freshwater ecosystems. However, the effects of FA on Cd biotoxicity remain unclear. Herein, the model ciliate Paramecium tetraurelia, a model unicellular eukaryotic organism, was used to explore the response to environmental relevant concentrations of Cd under acidification conditions. We show for the first time that exposure to acidified freshwater accelerated Cd bioaccumulation and enhanced Cd bioavailability in P. tetraurelia, sugg

Environmental impacts of selected metal cations for phosphorus capture in natural waters: A synthesis.

Cultural eutrophication from excessive human-related nutrient (phosphorus, P, and nitrogen, N) inputs is a major concern for water quality. Because P historically was regarded as the critical nutrient in controlling noxious algal/plant growth, P became the focus of "capturing" techniques, with emphasis on removal performance rather than environmental impacts. Here, we synthesize a literature review of known environmental effects linked to use of metal-cation-based P-capturing materials under eutrophic conditions in freshwaters. P-capturing materials with functional cations based on aluminum (A
