A retrospective comparison of frontal facial dimensions in alveolar-bone-grafted and nongrafted unilateral cleft lip and palate patients.

This retrospective study was undertaken to describe and compare frontal craniofacial dimensions in alveolar-bone-grafted and nongrafted complete unilateral cleft lip and palate (CUCLP) patients and in noncleft subjects with normal occlusions and good facial balance. Clinical data were obtained from the files of the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto. Patients were eligible for inclusion if they had posteroanterior cephalograms (PA) taken at adulthood and no congenital anomalies other than CUCLP. A total of 86 adult Caucasian CULCP patients were studied, including 58 who had not received graft

Exchange Cranioplasty Using Bioabsorbable Hydroxyapatite and Collagen Complex After Removal of an Extensive Frontal Bone Tumor in an Infant.

BACKGROUND: Forehead reconstruction is challenging. Reconstruction of the innate curvature of the forehead is difficult, and the forehead is an esthetically important part of the face. Although synthetic implants and autologous split bone grafts are useful, these cannot be used in infants. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 4-month-old girl was presented with a right frontal bone Ewing sarcoma. The tumor was removed, and the defect was reconstructed with an autologous contralateral parietal bone graft. The parietal bone defect was repaired with a bioabsorbable hydroxyapatite and collagen complex. Good recon

Internal Distraction Osteogenesis With Piezosurgery Oblique Osteotomy of Supraorbital Margin of Frontal Bone for the Treatment of Unilateral Coronal Synostosis.

PURPOSE: To assess the utility of internal distraction osteogenesis with Piezosurgery oblique osteotomy of supraorbital margin of frontal bone for the treatment of unilateral coronal synostosis and to study the outcome and complications of this procedure. Oblique osteotomy allows for entry into the cranial cavity, and along with parallel cut to the roof of the orbit, avoids the need to cut into the orbit which forms the frontal flap. METHODS: Oblique osteotomy was performed along the supraorbital rim to do a frontal suture of the glabella (ages of patients were less than 1 year) or on the opp

What bone part is important to remove in accessing the suprachiasmatic region with less frontal lobe retraction in frontotemporal craniotomies.

BACKGROUND: The anterolateral approach is one of the main routes for accessing suprachiasmatic lesions involving the anterior communicating artery (AComA) complex. Pterional (PT) craniotomy and its alternatives, including orbitozygomatic, orbitopterional, and mini-supraorbital craniotomies, have been developed as tailored frontotemporal craniotomies. One of the main differences between PT craniotomy and its alternatives is the removal of the orbital bone along with the sphenoid wing. However, which bone part is the most important to remove has not been discussed in relation to frontal lobe ret

Comparison of fast-setting calcium phosphate bone cement and fat autograft in a rabbit model of frontal sinus obliteration.

BACKGROUND: Traditionally, chronic obstruction of the frontal recess is managed by frontal sinus obliteration (FSO). This often requires the harvest of abdominal fat as a filler with all of its associated morbidity. In this study, we investigate the efficacy of calcium phosphate bone cement (Craniofacial Repair System [CRS]) as a material for FSO. METHODS: Eighteen New Zealand white rabbits were divided into three groups and carried out to two time periods. Six rabbits underwent FSO with fat autograft (control group) and 12 rabbits underwent FSO with CRS (study groups 1 and 2, respectively).

Fronto-orbital advancement and reconstruction using reverse frontal bone graft without the use of orbital bar: a technical note.

INTRODUCTION: We describe our technique of using reverse frontal bone graft for FOAR for patients with metopic or coronal synostosis and present our complications using the Leeds classification system for complications in craniosynostosis surgery. METHODS: Since April 2015, seventeen patients have been operated using this technique. We perform a frontal bone graft that is then reversed, and supraorbital margins are drilled out. The orbital bar is then removed and drilled down to make bone dust and on-lay bone grafts which are then used to fill gaps on exposed dura and fill in around the tempo

Endoscopic-Assisted Excision of Frontal Bone Osteomas: A Case Series Study of Technical Considerations and Complications from a Single Surgeon.

Background and Objectives: Frontal bone osteomas are benign tumors characterized by the abnormal proliferation of bone. Though typically asymptomatic, these masses often produce visible forehead deformity and may cause localized discomfort. Endoscopic resection has emerged as an optimal technique for appropriately selected frontal osteomas because it enables complete excision while minimizing visible scarring and risk of neurovascular injury. This case series reviews the senior author's patient outcomes and complications using a scalp-based, endoscopic-assisted surgical approach for frontal bo

Two-Staged Frontal Bone Defect Reconstruction: Perioperative Assessment of Scalp Vascularization Using Near-Infrared Indocyanine Green Video Angiography (Visionsense Iridium).

BACKGROUND: Head trauma and neurosurgical-related osteomyelitis are common causes of cranial bone defect. Even though cranioplasty is considered a safe and well-consolidated procedure, there are still some issues about the flap's vascularization assessment. In this paper we describe a 2-staged cranioplasty procedure, focusing on the perioperative evaluation of the skin flap vascularization. Our goal is to assess if the skin flap's perfusion measurement with indocyanine green fluorescence can be considered a reliable method to predict good outcome in cranioplasties. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 50-year

Radiographic Imaging to improve frontal plane weight bearing symmetry and its impact on gait in transtibial bone anchored prosthesis users.

Optimal frontal plane alignment of transtibial bone-anchored prostheses (BAPs) is essential to minimize knee joint loading asymmetries. This study examined whether bilateral whole-leg radiographic imaging could improve static alignment and reduce knee joint loading during gait in 23 unilateral transtibial BAP users with press-fit osseointegration implants with an experimental within subject study design. Static weight-bearing line (WBL) alignment and frontal plane knee moments during gait were assessed before and after the intervention. Pain levels were monitored one week before and one week a

[Results of animal experiments on the healing of bone defects in os frontale and os parietale after implantation of tricalciumphosphate sheets (author's transl)].

The healing of artificial one defects in the region of sinus frontalis and or parietale following implantation of tricalciumphosphate sheets was controlled in animal experiments. After 8 weeks, the implants were in direct bone contact without any demarcation of soft tissue structures. The tunica mucosa of the frontal sinus covered the ceramic sheet totally. Comparable results on the bone-contacting side of the implant have never been demonstrated before by other biomaterials like metal, acrylate, or aluminiumoxide ceramics.

Frontal bone window improves the ability of transcranial color-coded sonography to visualize the anterior cerebral artery of Asian patients with stroke.

The frontal bone window (FBW) is a promising approach in evaluating the anterior cerebral artery. The goal of the present study was to determine the rates of detection of the basal cerebral arteries by using the FBW alone and a combination of the FBW with the temporal bone window (TBW) in 163 patients. The combined application improved detection rates of A1 (58.6% versus 46.0%, P = .001) and A2 (43.6% versus 6.7%, P < .001) compared with the TBW alone.

Chronic frontal sinus disease: combined use of platelet-rich plasma and calvarial bone grafts for sinus obliteration in aggressive and secondary cases.

INTRODUCTION: The surgical management of chronic frontal sinusitis can be challenging. The most effective way to treat this condition is sinus obliteration. Several methods have been published. We evaluated the feasibility of a combined treatment, consisting of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and autologous calvarial bone chips, in chronic frontal sinus diseases (CFSD). PATIENTS AND METHODS: From January 2001 to June 2006, seven patients (four women and three men) were admitted presenting with signs and symptoms of CFSD. Their ages ranged from 35 to 67 years. Two patients presented with signs of f

A Middle Eocene Haplorhine Frontal Bone From the Tornillo Basin of Texas, and Its Implications for the Phylogenetic Relationships of Rooneyia and Other Paleogene Primates.

OBJECTIVES: Here we describe a well-preserved primate frontal bone (TMM 46513-1) recovered from Middle Eocene exposures of the Devil's Graveyard Formation in the Tornillo Basin of Texas. We also discuss the significance of frontal bone morphology for understanding early haplorhine phylogeny. MATERIALS AND METHODS: TMM 46513-1 was mechanically prepared, μCT scanned, and compared with a broad array of extant and fossil crown primates. Revised dates for the specimen were provided using 40Ar/39Ar geochronology. Dice-CT scans of Saguinus were used to investigate the contents of bony canals found w
