A systematic review and meta-analysis of the diagnostic accuracy of frozen section for parotid gland lesions.

We conducted a systematic literature review using MEDLINE and Embase to identify articles on diagnostic accuracy of frozen section (FS) for salivary gland lesions published between January 1, 1985, and December 31, 2010. We also reviewed the reference lists of all identified articles and conducted a forward search using Scopus to identify all articles citing the reference set. Meta-analysis was used to produce a summary receiver operating characteristic (SROC) curve from which summary estimates of sensitivity and specificity were obtained. Study quality was assessed using the Quality of Diagno

The value of frozen section biopsy in diagnosing necrotizing fasciitis: proposal of a new grading system.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: Necrotizing fasciitis is a serious disease entity, with only limited pathognomic features. PURPOSE: In necrotizing fasciitis a rapid diagnosis is necessary in order to reduce morbidity and mortality. In this study the investigation focused on specific features in the frozen section biopsy for diagnosing necrotizing fasciitis. METHODS: A total of ten patients are described with final pathological examination of resected tissue. RESULTS: A new grading system is suggested for frozen section biopsy in patients with necrotizing fasciitis. In the herein reported study it was

Erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis: frozen-section diagnosis.

Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) may be fatal. Although classified by body surface area skin detachment, … ndings in the epidermis were observed in two patients finally diagnosed as overlap SJS-TEN and TEN. Frozen sections are useful not only to make a diagnosis of erythema multiforme but to assess a potential to exhibit more aggressive clinical behaviors (SJS or TEN).

The value of frozen section Pipelle endometrial biopsy as an outpatient procedure in the diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy.

This is a prospective study evaluating 28 patients who were suspected to have ectopic pregnancy. Frozen section Pipelle endometrial biopsy was performed as an outpatient procedure to look for the presence of chorionic villi in the specimen. The sensitivity of the frozen section endometrial biopsy in detecting the presence of chorionic villi was 13.3% and the specificity was 100%. The positive predictive value was 100% and the negative predictive value was 50%. We concluded that frozen section endometrial biopsy was not helpful in predicting intrauterine gestational process; therefore, it has a

Extensive frozen section examination of axillary sentinel nodes to determine selective axillary dissection.

As experience accumulates on the use of sentinel node biopsy in breast cancer, it is becoming clear that the method can reliably predict the state of the axilla and thus be used to decide whether to perform complete axillary dissection. Ongoing controlled trials will soon provide definitive evidence on the latter point. The key issue regarding sentinel node biopsy is pathologic evaluation of the biopsied node, which should be done intraoperatively whenever possible. In our initial experience with a conventional intraoperative frozen section method, the false-negative rate was 19% compared to e

Intraoperative parathyroid aspiration and parathyroid hormone assay as an alternative to frozen section for tissue identification.

Most people would agree that successful parathyroidectomy depends on two important variables: the surgeon's recognition and excision of the abnormal parathyroid gland(s) and the pathologist's confirmation that the removed tissue is parathyroid tissue. Frozen section is usually employed to confirm the identity of parathyroid tissue, but occasionally confirmation cannot be made without a permanent section, as with intrathyroidal glands. This study proposes a new method of expeditious and easy confirmation of parathyroid tissue utilizing the immunoassay for quick measurement of intraoperative par

Accuracy of intraoperative frozen-section analysis of axillary nodes. Edinburgh Breast Unit team.

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative assessment of axillary lymph node involvement would allow selection of patients who would benefit from axillary lymph node dissection. METHODS: Eighty-eight patients undergoing mastectomy or wide excision had four nodes sampled and sent for frozen-section examination. RESULTS: Frozen-section analysis of the nodes was correct in 81 of the 88 patients but missed seven of the 26 patients who had involved nodes on paraffin section (sensitivity 73 per cent). CONCLUSION: Frozen-section analysis of axillary lymph nodes as currently practised cannot be recommended for rou

A 30s PAS stain for frozen section analysis of surgical margins of vulvectomy in Paget's disease.

Application of a modified periodic-acid Schiff's procedure (PAS) technique in frozen section analysis of surgical margins of vulvectomy specimen in Paget's disease is described. The reaction obtained using a microwave procedure takes only 30 seconds. This method was found to be useful in identifying Paget cells on the margins thought to be free of disease by conventional histological evaluation.

Intraoperative cytology in breast cancer diagnosis: comparison between cytologic and frozen section techniques.

The diagnostic accuracy of frozen section (FS) examination and intraoperative cytology (IOC) has been compared in two different series of breast biopsies in which only one of the two methods has been used. The intraoperative results have been compared with the final histological diagnoses. Five-hundred-ten cases have been investigated by using FS only, and 407 by means of IOC. The two series were comparable because they included the same pathologies; moreover we have subdivided each series into four groups of pathologies to better evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of two methods. The total diag

Usefulness of frozen-section examination in resected mid-rectal cancer after preoperative radiation.

The surgical treatment of rectal cancer of the middle third remains controversial. We treated 30 consecutive patients with preoperative radiotherapy (45 Gy) and low anterior resection. Anastomoses were performed with a stapler. Intraoperative frozen-section examination of the rectal margin established that it was free of tumor. Two patients died of surgery-related causes. Median follow-up of the remaining patients is now 52 months (range: 26 to 76 months). Eight patients had recurrences documented at surgical re-exploration: two local (pelvic) only, three local and distant, and two distant onl

Management of monorchid patients with previous testis cancer: the role of frozen sections and the real possibility of testis sparing surgery in a large retrospective series.

BACKGROUND: The role of surgical exploration and frozen sections (FSs) in monorchid patients with testicular nodules is still not well defined. We tested the role of surgical exploration and FSs in monorchid patients and the impact on the chance of testis sparing surgery (TSS). METHODS: We identified 81 consecutive monorchid patients with testicular nodules between 2008 and 2024 candidates to surgical exploration and FSs. The statistical significance of differences in medians and proportions was tested with the Wilcoxon rank sum and Chi-square tests. Multivariable logistic regression models (…

Diagnostic Accuracy of Intraoperative Frozen Section Examination of Pelvic Lymph Nodes in Cervical Carcinoma: A Cross-Sectional Study in Eastern India.

Background Cervical cancer continues to be a major cause of cancer-related incidence and mortality in women, especially within low- and middle-income countries where available screening tests and preventive healthcare services are suboptimal. Intraoperative frozen section examination (IFSE) enables real-time evaluation of suspicious pelvic lymph nodes and helps guide surgical management. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy and reliability of IFSE of pelvic lymph nodes in patients with cervical carcinoma using final histopathology as the reference standard. Utility of frozen section pathology in oral squamous cell carcinoma: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

The impact of intraoperative frozen section analysis on final margin status, loco-regional recurrence, and survival in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) remains uncertain. This systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to compare outcomes of OSCC resections performed with intraoperative frozen section analysis versus gross clinical examination alone. Primary outcomes included final margin status, recurrence, and survival. The literature search was performed on August 18, 2024 via PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Cochrane Library. R statistical software was used for the data

The frozen section trap of minimal atypia in synchronous medullary and papillary thyroid carcinoma: A case report.

RATIONALE: Synchronous double primary cancer refers to 2 independent primary tumors that occur in the same organ at the same time or within 6 months. We report a case of double primary carcinoma of thyroid gland with different histological subtypes, which is composed of papillary thyroid carcinoma and medullary thyroid carcinoma. Usually, thyroid carcinoma will be confirmed by intraoperative freezing, but it is very easy to miss the diagnosis because of the minimal atypia of medullary carcinoma. This paper introduces a detailed case, aiming to understand the significance of laboratory examinat
