Co-circulation of Plasmodium and Bacterial DNAs in Blood of Febrile and Afebrile Children from Urban and Rural Areas in Gabon.

Malaria is considered to be the most common etiology of fever in sub-Saharan Africa while bacteremias exist but are under assessed. This study aimed to assess bacteremias and malaria in children from urban and rural areas in Gabon. DNA extracts from blood samples of 410 febrile and 60 afebrile children were analyzed using quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Plasmodium spp. was the microorganism most frequently detected in febrile (78.8%, 323/410) and afebrile (13.3%, 8/60) children, (P < 0.001). DNA from one or several bacteria were detected in 15 febrile patients (3.7%) but not in the con…

Evidence of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) in domestic mice in Gabon: risk of emergence of LCMV encephalitis in Central Africa.

Lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) can cause acute fatal disease on all continents but was never detected in Africa. We report the first detection of LCMV RNA in a common European house mouse (Mus musculus domesticus) in Africa. Phylogenetic analyses show a close relationship with North American strains. These findings suggest that there is a risk of the appearance of LCMV acute encephalitis cases. This is a perfect example of virus dissemination by its natural host that may have dramatic public health consequences.

Prevalence and risk factor assessment of Tropheryma whipplei in a rural community in Gabon: a community-based cross-sectional study.

Tropheryma whipplei is the causative agent of Whipple's disease and has been detected in stools of asymptomatic carriers. Colonization has been associated with precarious hygienic conditions. There is a lack of knowledge about the epidemiology and transmission characteristics on a population level, so the aim of this study was to determine the overall and age-specific prevalence of T. whipplei and to identify risk factors for colonization. This molecular epidemiological survey was designed as a cross-sectional study in a rural community in Central African Gabon and inhabitants of the entire co…

Opportunistic diseases in HIV-infected patients in Gabon following the administration of highly active antiretroviral therapy: a retrospective study.

Opportunistic diseases cause substantial morbidity and mortality to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients. Highly active anti … mocystosis accounted for 0.44% and 0.21%, respectively. The prevalence of opportunistic diseases in Gabon remains high. New guidelines emphasize the importance of initiating antiretroviral therapy early to reconstitute the immune system, and reduce disease risk, and treat the primary opportunistic infection of pulmonary tuberculosis.

Clonal Transmission of Emerging Novel Plasmodium falciparum Kelch13 Mutations and Increasing Complexity of Infection in Libreville, Gabon, 2021-2023.

Artemisinin partial resistance (ART-R) in Plasmodium falciparum , due to mutations in the Kelch13 (K13) propeller domain, is spreading across Africa. However, data from Central Africa remain sparse. This study performed molecular surveillance in a peri-urban sentinel site in Libreville, Gabon, from 2021 to 2023 to assess emerging resistance markers and parasite population dynamics. Febrile patients with confirmed P. falciparum infection were enrolled at the Melen sentinel site. Dried blood spots were collected and isolated DNA sequenced using molecular inversion probes (MIPs) targeting drug re…

Anatomicohistological characteristics of the genital tubular organs of the female brush-tailed porcupine (Atherurus africanus, Gray 1842) from Gabon.

The present study examines the anatomic and histological characteristics of the female genital tract of the wild brush-tailed porcupine (Atherurus africanus). A description of the macroscopic and microscopic features of the tubular genital organs based on observations made in 18 wild adult females is presented. The histological stains used were haematoxylin and eosin, 1% toluidine blue, PAS-haematoxylin and Masson's trichrome. Observations indicate that the fimbriated infundibulum of the oviduct completely surrounds and is attached to the entire ovarian surface. The uterus is bicornuate, being

Reproductive functional anatomy and oestrous cycle pattern of the female brush-tailed porcupine (Atherurus africanus, Gray 1842) from Gabon.

In the present study, we examined certain features of the functional anatomy of the female genital tract of the wild brush-tailed porcupine (Atherurus africanus) to obtain data on the reproductive biology of this African forest rodent. Two consecutive experiments were performed. The aim of the first was to establish macroscopic and microscopic features of the genital organs, and to explore correlations between predominant ovarian structures and vaginal contents in 20 wild, mature females. In the second experiment, we inspected the external genitalia and vaginal smears of a further 10 females i

The economic burden of loiasis: A comprehensive cost-of-illness analysis of regionally representative, individual-level data from rural Gabon.

Loiasis is a vector-borne filarial infection endemic to parts of sub-Saharan Africa. It disproportionally affects economically disadvantaged communities in rural, forested regions. To better understand the economic burden of loiasis, we conducted a comprehensive cost-of-illness study in an endemic region of Gabon, with the aim of quantifying the financial costs incurred by individuals infected with the disease from a societal perspective. We conducted a cross-sectional survey in 2023 in rural Gabon. Study participants took part in diagnostic testing for loiasis and were interviewed based on a …
