Gait analysis related to functional outcome in patients operated for ankle fractures.

Ankle fractures are among the most common lower limb fractures. Associations between postoperative radiographic results and clinical outcome have been found, but less is known about the relevant ankle biomechanics. This study analyzed ankle kinematics, radiographic findings, and patient-reported outcome measures (PROM) in patients treated for ankle fractures. The hypothesis was that patients after ankle fracture surgery had less flexion/extension in the ankle compared to healthy subjects and that fracture severity had significant influence on kinematics and patient satisfaction. Thirty-three p

Balance and gait analysis of senior tumble-prone patients with cerebrovascular disease.

This study aims to observe the tumble status for senior patients with cerebrovascular disease, and to analyze the balance and gait condition in order to provide the basis for clinical prevention and nursing care. A total of 48 senior patients with cerebrovascular disease were investigated with the Tinetti balance and gait evaluation, and the relation between tumble occurrence and balance ability was interrogated. The total score of balance evaluation value and gait value for 89.1% of the senior patients with cerebrovascular disease was fewer than 19 points, which indicated a risk of tumble. Th

Validation of a Footwear-Based Gait Analysis System With Action-Related Feedback.

Quantitative gait analysis enables clinicians to evaluate patient mobility and to diagnose neuromuscular disorders. The clinical application of gait analysis is currently limited by the high operating costs of gait laboratories. The use of instrumented footwear that performs out of the lab measurements on subjects' walking patterns is a promising way to overcome this limitation. Besides serving as assessment tools, such devices can also act as retraining tools that help regulate a patient's gait with acoustic or vibrotactile stimuli.

[Georges Gilles of Tourette, pioneer of gait analysis in the nervous system diseases].

Georges Gilles de la Tourette's contribution to neurology goes beyond the description of the neurological disorder named after him. On December 28, 1885, he defended his doctoral thesis devoted to "gait in the diseases of the nervous system, studied by the method of imprints". In collaboration with Albert Londe, he worked for two years in Charcot's department on "a simple method applicable to both healthy and unhealthy patients", establishing the scientific and modern basis of functional exploration of human gait. The purpose was to "record the modifications of the gait and to fix them permane

Improvement in function after valgus bracing of the knee. An analysis of gait symmetry.

The use of a valgus brace can effectively relieve the symptoms of unicompartmental osteoarthritis of the knee. This study provides an objective measurement of function by analysis of gait symmetry. This was measured in 30 patients on four separate occasions: immediately before and after initial fitting and then again at three months with the brace on and off. All patients reported immediate symptomatic improvement with less pain on walking. After fitting the brace, symmetry indices of stance and the swing phase of gait showed a consistent and immediate improvement at 0 and 3 months, respective

Machine learning-assisted gait analysis for lameness detection in heterogeneous dog populations.

Definitively detecting the presence and location of pain and lameness in a dog can be challenging. Clinical gait analysis can be a useful tool to understand, diagnose, monitor, rehabilitate, and design treatment plans for a variety of musculoskeletal and neurological abnormalities. However its use to detect and distinguish abnormalities can still be limited, particularly in cases of subclinical lameness or multi-limb involvement. This study aimed to develop a proof-of-concept model for machine learning-assisted detection of lameness using temporospatial and kinetic gait parameter measurements.…

Temporospatial gait analysis of squat walking using a passive lower extremity exoskeleton.

This study examined the impact of a chair-type wearable exoskeleton (CEX) on ambulation in a squatting posture. Twenty participants underwent forward, backward, and sideways walking trials with and without the CEX. Results indicated a significant (more than 70 %) reduction in anterior and posterior walking speed on CEX, while lateral walking speed remained unaffected (less than 25 %). Despite the diminished pace in forward and backward walking, CEX demonstrated potential as a dynamic assistive device in occupations involving frequent squatting. More importantly, lateral walking with CEX did no

Impact of Becker muscular dystrophy on gait patterns: Insights from biomechanical analysis.

BACKGROUND: Current research on muscular dystrophy primarily focuses on Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) with early onset. However, studies on gait characteristics in Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD) patients with later onset, particularly those diagnosed after the age of 16, remain limited. The late onset of symptoms may disrupt previously established gait patterns, potentially leading to unique compensatory mechanisms and clinical outcomes. RESEARCH QUESTION: This study aims to investigate gait characteristics and plantar pressure distribution in BMD patients with symptom onset after the ag
