Electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) can convert CO2 into high-value chemicals and fuels, which not only offers a promising way to store the intermittent renewable electricity but also contributes to achieving carbon neutrality. Smoke inhalation is a leading cause of fire-related deaths, primarily due to toxic gases like carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen cyanide (HCN). Both gases often coexist in fire victims, but while CO poisoning is commonly recognized in emergency settings, HCN intoxication is often underdiagnosed, partly due to the lack of rapid diagnostic tools and the overlapping clinical presentation with CO poisoning. A simple method for the research and the identification of chlorinated solvents in biological fluids and tissues is described. The solvents are extracted using headspace solidphase microextraction and detected or measured by gas chromatography with electron capture detector. Three accidental poisonings are reported: one with carbon tetrachloride, one with trichlorethylene and the last one is a double intoxication with tetrachloroethylene and trichlorethylene.

Clostridium perfiringens may cause myonecrosis (i.e. gas gangrene), acute food poisoning or necrotic enteritis (e.g. enteritis necroticans or Pig Bel). We describe a case of enteritis necroticans in a 33 year old man with acute myeloid leukaemia. He presented with an acute abdomen, diarrhoea and pancytopaenia and extensive accumulation of gas in the intrahepatic and extrahepatic portal veins. Clostridium perfringens is responsible for a number of clinical conditions ranging from relatively mild food poisoning to the potentially life-threatening gas gangrene. Fortunately, C. perfringens has remained relatively susceptible to first line antibiotics in the treatment of soft tissue infection, however, the prevalence of antibiotic resistance is increasing amongst other anaerobic organisms. A case of anaerobic cellulitis caused by a clindamycin-resistant C. perfringens is described here, emphasising the emerging problem of antimicrobial resistance.

Between 1976 and 1979, 22 patients had hyperbaric oxygen therapy at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Medical Center. Seventeen patients benefited and five did not--one of two carbon monoxide poisoning patients, both gas gangrene patients, and four of five osteomyelitis victims were greatly helped while 10 of 13 soft tissue wounds were healed with the hyperbaric oxygen treatment. This local series exemplifies the range and limitations of the medical application of hyperbaric oxygen.

Catalyst poisoning problems limit the application of gas-solid non-thermal plasma (NTP) catalyzed decomposition of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (Cl-VOCs). To mitigate the catalyst deactivation, catalyst iron-loaded activated carbon (Fe-C) was added to the UV-activated liquid phase downstream of the NTP reactor (NTP + UV/Fe-C(L)) for the degradation of chlorobenzene (CB) in this study. The effect of nasal obstruction on mice--the maice were forced to breathe through the mouth--was studied when the animals were exposed to noxious gases. It was noted that the forced mouth breathing made the mice less vulnerable to hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide and toluen vapor when expressed by the time interval before they lost righting reflex or showed respiratory arrest. The levels of the gases which could induce these sings within 5-10 minutes were significantly elevated with the "mouth breathing" mice. Possible mechanisms for this phenomenon and its application for men were discussed.

In view of the flue gas characteristics of cement kilns in China, the development of low-temperature denitrification catalysts with excellent anti-poisoning performance has important theoretical and practical significance.
