Antioxidant intake and its relationship with generalized anxiety disorder among adults.

Antioxidant intake may contribute to the prevention of numerous diseases, particularly those related to stress-induced psychiatric and stress disorders. The current study aimed to assess the relationship between daily antioxidant intake (DAI) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) in adults. It also sought to investigate the correlation between the type of diet in conjunction with DAI and the scores on GAD 7-Item Scale in adults. A cross-sectional design was used to examine if DAI was lower in individuals with GAD; followed by an interventional study of 40 adults with severe GAD, who were expo…

Reduced top-down attentional control in adolescents with generalized anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) can significantly impair quality of life and is associated with a relatively poor long-term prognosis. Anxiety disorders are often associated with hyper-responsiveness to threat, perhaps coupled with impaired executive functioning. However, GAD, particularly adolescent GAD, has been the focus of little functional neuroimaging work compared to other anxiety disorders. Here, we examine the neural association of adolescent GAD with responsiveness to threat and response control. METHODS: The study involved 35 adolescents with GAD and 34 healthy compa…

Agomelatine for the Treatment of Generalized Anxiety Disorder: A Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Despite multiple drugs available, a large proportion of patients with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) do not show adequate response and remission. Thus, additional novel pharmacological agents are needed to increase treatment option for GAD. We aimed to investigate efficacy and safety of agomelatine in the treatment of GAD by conducting a meta-analysis. METHODS: An extensive search of multiple databases and clinical trial registries were conducted. Mean change in total scores on Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A) from baseline to endpoint was our primary outcome measure. Seco…

Disrupted dynamic local brain functional connectivity patterns in generalized anxiety disorder.

Previous studies have reported abnormalities in static brain activity and connectivity in patients with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). However, the dynamic patterns of brain connectivity in patients with GAD have not been fully explored. In this study, we aimed to investigate the dynamic local brain functional connectivity in patients with GAD using dynamic regional phase synchrony (DRePS), a newly developed method for assessing intrinsic dynamic local functional connectivity. Seventy-four patients with GAD and 74 healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled and underwent resting-state functional…

Correlates of worry and functional somatic symptoms in generalized anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Worry and functional somatic symptoms (FSS) are important clinical features of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Although there is literature on the prevalence of worry and FSS in GAD, there is limited data on psychological correlates of worry and somatic symptoms in patients with GAD. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this research was to evaluate the relationship of worry and FSS with somatosensory amplification, health anxiety (hypochondriasis), and alexithymia in patients with GAD. METHODS: Forty patients with the diagnosis of GAD were assessed with Penn State Worry Questionnaire, …

Abnormal dynamic functional connectivity density in patients with generalized anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have revealed the abnormal static functional connectivity (FC) among different brain regions in patients with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). However, little is known about the dynamic changes of FC in patients with GAD. METHODS: This study investigated the whole-brain dynamic changes of FC in patients with GAD by combining global FC density (FCD) and sliding window correlation analyses. The standard deviation of dynamic FCD (dFCD) was calculated to evaluate its temporal variability along time. Support vector regression was then employed to predict the symptom…

Probabilistic Learning by Positive and Negative Reinforcement in Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

This experiment examined learning tendencies in generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) using reinforcement feedback for probabilistic outcomes. One hundred sixty-six GAD and 105 non-GAD participants were randomized to a computerized probabilistic learning task that used either negative or positive reinforcement. Participants chose between stimuli with specific probabilities of reinforcement to learn which of each pair had the highest probability. Reinforced choices either removed an angry face (negative reinforcement) or made a happy face appear (positive reinforcement). Results showed that those …

Generalized Anxiety Disorder, worry and attention to threat: A systematic review.

Among anxious populations, attention has been demonstrated to be preferentially biased to threatening material compared to neutral or other valenced material. Individuals who have high levels of trait worry, such as those with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), may be biased to threat but research has produced equivocal findings. This review aimed to systematically review the extant experimental literature to establish the current evidence of attentional bias to threat among trait worriers compared to healthy controls and other clinical populations. Twenty-nine published articles were include…

Study of Life Events and Personality Dimensions in Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Life events, recognized as stressors, due to their unanticipated nature, can cause psychiatric illness. Also there is some line of continuity between neurotic illness and antecedent personality traits. AIM: To study generalized anxiety disorder in relation to Life events and personality dimensions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Certain hypotheses were tested in two groups, namely 30 Generalized Anxiety Disorder patients (GAD) and 30 matched controls, by utilizing assessment tools. These include: GAD patients experience more undesirable Life events than normal; GAD patients with high l…

Prevalence, correlates, comorbidity and severity of generalized anxiety disorder in Singapore.

Despite its pervasiveness and associated impairment, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) remains a poorly recognized disorder. Furthermore, given that GAD has been relatively understudied in Asia, the current study examined the prevalence, correlates and co-morbid conditions of this disorder in a multi-ethnic population of Singapore. Data was utilized from the Singapore Mental Health Study (SMHS), a cross-sectional epidemiological survey conducted among the adult population (n=6616) aged 18 years and above. The Composite International Diagnostic Interview version 3.0 (CIDI v3.0) was used to ass…

Cortical inhibitory and excitatory function in drug-naive generalized anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: A growing body of evidence suggests that deficits in GABAergic inhibitory and glutamatergic excitatory neurotransmission may be involved in the core pathophysiology of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), a disease characterized by pathological anxious worrying. The aim of the present study was to measure motor cortical excitability by paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (ppTMS) in patients with GAD. METHODS: ppTMS measurements of excitation and inhibition from bilateral motor cortices were investigated in 26 right-handed GAD patients who were drug-naïve (half of them wi…

Attenuated responses to emotional expressions in women with generalized anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is under-researched despite its high prevalence and large impact on the healthcare system. There is a paucity of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies that explore the neural correlates of emotional processing in GAD. The present study investigated the blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) response to processing positive and negative facial emotions in patients with GAD. METHOD: A total of 15 female GAD patients and 16 female controls undertook an implicit face emotion task during fMRI scanning. They also performed a face emotion rec…

A randomized controlled trial of atomoxetine in generalized social anxiety disorder.

The current mainstays of social anxiety disorder pharmacotherapy are serotonergic agents, with less known about the efficacy of more noradrenergic drugs. Atomoxetine (ATM), a highly selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, is currently approved for the treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We describe the first controlled trial of ATM with respect to efficacy and tolerability in adults with the generalized subtype of social anxiety disorder (GSAD) without comorbid ADHD. Twenty-seven outpatients with clinically prevailing diagnoses of GSAD by the Diagnostic and Stati

Generalized anxiety disorder with and without excessive worry in Hong Kong.

BACKGROUND: Two previous U.S. studies found that although generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) without self-perceived excessive worry was milder than GAD with excessive worry, its persistence, impairment, and risk for subsequent onset of other mental disorders were still substantial. This study examined the implications of relaxing the "excessiveness" criterion on the prevalence and socio-demographic profile of GAD in a Chinese population sample by considering both self and others' perception of excessive worry. METHOD: 2,005 respondents aged 15-65 years participated in a structured telephone i…

Attentional bias for emotional faces in children with generalized anxiety disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To examine attentional bias for angry and happy faces in 7- to 12-year-old children with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD; n = 23) and nonanxious controls (n = 25). METHOD: Children completed a visual probe task in which pairs of face stimuli were displayed for 500 milliseconds and were replaced by a visual probe in the spatial location of one of the faces. RESULTS: Severely anxious children with GAD showed an attentional bias toward both angry and happy faces. Children with GAD with a milder level of anxiety and nonanxious controls did not show an attentional bias toward emotion…
