To determine consistency in usage of pedigree symbols by genetics professionals, we reviewed pedigrees printed in 10 human genetic and medical journals and 24 medical genetics textbooks. We found no consistent symbolization for common situations such as pregnancy, spontaneous abortion, death, or test results. Inconsistency in pedigree design can create difficulties in the interpretation of family studies and detract from the pedigree's basic strength of simple and accurate communication of medical information. We recommend the development of standard pedigree symbols, and their incorporation i

X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy is the most common peroxisomal disease among primary leukodystrophies, characterized by a progressive course and combined damage to the adrenal glands and central and peripheral nervous systems. The disease is caused by mutations in the ABCD1 gene, which encodes the ALDP transmembrane peroxisome protein, which is involved in transporting very long-chain fatty acids (VLFAs). Dysfunctions of peroxisome metabolism occur due to a lack of acyl-CoA synthetase, reducing the efficiency of beta-oxidation of VLFAs with a carbon chain length ≥C22 and resulting in the accumul

Some of the pioneers of human genetics across Europe are described, based on a series of 100 recorded interviews made by the author. These interviews, and the memories of earlier workers in the field recalled by interviewees, provide a vivid picture, albeit incomplete, of the early years of human and medical genetics. From small beginnings in the immediate post-World War 2 years, human genetics grew rapidly across many European countries, a powerful factor being the development of human cytogenetics, stimulated by concerns over the risks of radiation exposure. Medical applications soon followe

Victor Almon McKusick (VAM) is widely recognized as the father of the field of medical genetics. He established one of the first medical genetics clinics in the United States at Johns Hopkins in 1957 and developed a robust training program with the tripartite mission of education, research, and clinical care. Thousands of clinicians and scientists were educated over the years through the Short Course in Medical and Molecular Genetics, which VAM founded with Dr. Thomas Roderick in 1960. His Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM), a catalog of human genes and genetic disorders, serves as the

This study explores the provision of clinical genetic services in Colombia, in order to promote improvements in these services. We carried out semi-structured interviews with 20 doctors working in genetic clinics, and we report the challenges in providing genetic counselling that they have identified. Education and training in genetics in Colombian medical schools were described as inadequate, and interviewees found that many of their medical colleagues knew too little to be able to refer appropriately to a genetics service. The doctors interviewed recognised their own limitations, including l

This article is concerned with understanding moral aspects of everyday life in families with Huntington's Disease (HD). It draws on findings from an empirical research project in Denmark in 1998-2002 involving multi-sited ethnography to argue that medical genetics provides a particular framework for conducting life in an HD family. A framework that implies that being informed and making use of genetic services expresses greater moral responsibility than conducting life without drawing on these resources. The moral imperative of engagement in medical genetics is challenged here by two pieces of

This brief report provides an overview of the history and current status of genetic services in Cuba. In 1971, the University of Medical Sciences of Havana began to train doctors in medical genetics according to the medicine development plan in Cuba. With the aim of introducing genetic services to the population, two main issues were identified: the impact of neural tube defects as a cause of infantile mortality, and a founder effect resulting in a high frequency of sickle cell anemia, which increased the mortality rate and impacted the quality of peoples' lives. The impact of consanguinity is

Prenatal diagnoses (PND) in Belgium are performed exclusively in licensed centres of medical genetics linked to university hospitals. These centres of genetics provide comprehensive genetic services which include, in addition to genetic tests, genetic counselling and moral support. These services are accessible to all residents in Belgium through coverage by the social security. PND has become a widely accepted procedure by the public and the health professionals, and has achieved significant prevention of birth defects, mainly chromosome abnormalities. The main problems involved in PND in Bel

Across six decades, androgenetics has consistently concentrated on discovering genetic causes and enhancing the molecular diagnostics of male infertility, disorders of sex development, and their broader implications on health, such as cancer and other comorbidities. Despite vast clinical knowledge, the training of andrologists often lacks fundamental basics in medical genetics. This work, as part of the Special Issue of Andrology "Genetics in Andrology", provides the core terminology in medical genetics and technological advancements in genomics, required to understand the ever-progressing res

The study aim was to evaluate the association between genetics referrals, training in medical school, residency, or continuing medical education and physician knowledge of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC). A survey of 55 questions was administered to 140 physicians evaluating knowledge and practice patterns regarding HBOC. Physicians with genetics training during residency were more likely to recognize that most instances of ovarian cancer are not hereditary (odds ratio (OR) = 3.16; 95 % confidence interval (CI) 1.32, 7.58). Physicians with continuing medical education (CME) trainin

Medical genetics serves as a bridge between basic medical science and clinical courses. With its complex curriculum and abstract concepts, traditional lecture-based teaching often leads to difficulties in comprehension, diminishes students' interest in learning, and results in poor teaching outcomes. Incorporating typical case studies into instruction can make genetic theories more tangible, enhance students' intuitive understanding, facilitate their grasp of abstract concepts, and boost their interest in learning. Hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) is a group of hereditary neurological disor

INTRODUCTION: Advances in genomic medicine contribute to increased demand for clinical genetics services and require physicians to understand the interprofessional practice of this field. Medical students receive a foundation in genetics during preclinical studies, but variability in clinical experience may limit knowledge of and recruitment into this clinical specialty. In this resource, we describe an approach for simulating exposure to the practice of clinical genetics during the core pediatrics clerkship.
METHODS: Prior to class, students researched and considered a mock genetics case. In

With increasing demand for access to genetic services and the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics' (ACMG) recommendation that individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and developmental delay be offered genetic evaluation, alternative service models for genetic care are needed to increase efficiency. Web-based tools have enhanced access to clinical genetics content and services, particularly for patients with common referral indications such as ASD. The Boston Medical Center pediatric genetics clinic reports on the creation of an Expedited ASD Genetics Clinic (EAGC) which i

21 hydroxylase deficiency (21-OHD), the most common form of congenital adrenal hyperplasia, is caused by defects in CYP21A2 gene, which encodes the cytochrome P450 oxidase (P450C21) involved in glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid synthesis. The diagnosis of 21-OHD is based on the comprehensive evaluation of clinical manifestation, biochemical alteration and molecular genetics results. Due to the complex structure of CYP21A2, special techniques are required to perform delicate analysis to avoid the interference of its pseudogene. Recently, the state-of-the-art diagnostic methods were applied t

BACKGROUND: High-stakes conversations are frequent in Medical Genetics. News shared is often perceived as "bad" and can lead to patient hostility. Breaking bad news (BBN) is therefore a challenging clinical task for physicians and is often included as a foundational skill in medical education. The methods of teaching this skill are variable, with no widely accepted standard. We propose the use of simulation as a safe and effective training tool.
APPROACH: Medical Genetics residents participated in a 4-week curriculum on BBN and de-escalating patient hostility and anger. The curriculum consist

Clinical cancer genetics is becoming an integral part of the care of cancer patients. This review describes the clinical aspects, genetics, and clinical genetic management of most of the major hereditary cancer susceptibility syndromes. Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2, von Hippel-Lindau disease, and familial adenomatous polyposis are examples of syndromes for which genetic testing to identify at-risk family members is considered the standard of care. Genetic testing for these syndromes is sensitive and affordable, and it will change medical management. Cancer genetic counseling and testing

Brazil is a country of continental dimensions and most genetic services are concentrated in the Southeast and South, including the Medical Genetics Service of the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre (MGS/HCPA). As many areas on the country do not have adequate medical genetics support, networks were designed to extend the service of the MGS/HCPA reference center. This paper presents the information and diagnosis networks that have their headquarters at MGS/HCPA: SIAT (National Information System on Teratogenic Agents), SIEM (Information Service on Inborn Errors of Metabolism), Alô Genética (H

After a brief introduction, the role of medical genetics in modern ethical conflicts is emphasized. International working approaches are discussed in an attempt to solve medical conflicts. The studies proposed by Wertz and Fletcher are reviewed in order to assess the strength of consensus on various working approaches. A brief discussion evaluates working approaches to ethical problems in genetics. This discussion also focuses on genetic counselling and screening questions regarding pertinent hereditary diseases. Final considerations point out the demanding role played by the modern geneticist
