Microbial Detoxification of Sediments Underpins Persistence of Zostera marina Meadows.

Eelgrass meadows have attracted much attention not only for their ability to maintain marine ecosystems as feeding grounds for marine organisms but also for their potential to store atmospheric and dissolved CO2 as blue carbon. This study comprehensively evaluated the bacterial and chemical data obtained from eelgrass sediments of different scales along the Japanese coast to investigate the effect on the acclimatization of eelgrass. Regardless of the eelgrass habitat, approximately 1% Anaerolineales, Babeliales, Cytophagales, and Phycisphaerales was present in the bottom sediment. Sulfate-redu

Immobilization of phosphorus in sediment-water system by hydrous iron oxide and hydrous iron oxide/calcite mixture under feed input condition.

The efficiency and mechanism of hydrous iron oxide (HFO) and HFO/calcite mixture to inactivate the phosphorus in the overlying water (OW)/sediment system under the feed adding condition were explored, and the effect of HFO and HFO/calcite mixture addition on the diversity, composition and function of bacterial communities in the sediment was examined. HFO and HFO/calcite mixture direct addition can effectively lower the concentration of soluble reactive phosphorus (RSP) and diffusion gradient in thin film-unstable phosphorus (PDGT) in OW and inactivate the PDGT in the upper sediment. Descriptive analyses of bacterial communities in marine sediment microcosms spiked with fish wastes, emamectin benzoate, and oxytetracycline.

In marine sediments surrounding salmon aquaculture sites, organic matter (OM) enrichment has been shown to influence resident bacterial community composition; however, additional effects on these communities due to combined use of the sea-lice therapeutant emamectin benzoate (EMB) and the widely used antibiotic oxytetracycline (OTC) are unknown. Here, we use sediment microcosms to assess the influence of OM, EMB, and OTC on benthic bacterial communities. Microcosms consisted of mud or sand sediments enriched with OM (fish and feed wastes) and spiked with EMB and OTC at environmentally-relevant

Unraveling seasonal shifts in microbial and geochemical mediated arsenic mobilization at the estuarine sediment-water interface under redox changes.

The mobilization of arsenic (As) at the sediment-water interface (SWI) is crucial for determining the accumulation of dissolved As to potentially toxic levels. However, the specific impacts of redox processes involving iron (Fe) and sulfur (S), as well as microbial activities occurring in sediments, on As mobilization at the marine SWI remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated As mobilization at the SWI in the Changjiang Estuary during three different seasons with different benthic redox conditions. The preferential reduction of arsenate (As(V)) to arsenite (As(III)) and subsequ

Pollution characteristics, distribution, and source analysis of carbazole and polyhalogenated carbazoles in coastal areas of Bohai Bay, China.

Polyhalogenated carbazoles (PHCZs) are a class of emerging environmental contaminants formed by the substitution of hydrogen on carbazole (CZ) benzene rings with halogens (Cl, Br, I) with potential dioxin-like toxicity, and they have been frequently detected in various environmental media and organisms recently. Nevertheless, co-research of CZ/PHCZs with PAHs is very limited. In addition, I-PHCZs, which are believed to be much more toxic than CZ, Cl-PHCZs and Br-PHCZs, have a few data in sediments previously. The concentration and distribution of CZ/PHCZs and PAHs were analyzed in 18 surface s

Preliminary study on the acute effects of hydrogen sulfide on Amphipoda (Lysianassoidea; Pseudorchomene sp. and Anonyx sp.) collected from deep-sea floors in the Sea of Japan.

To study the environmental impact of the assessment technologies for the development of shallow methane hydrate zones in the Sea of Japan, deep-sea amphipods (Pseudorchomene sp. and Anonyx sp.) were collected from a depth of approximately 1000 m and were tested for H2S toxicity. At 0.57 mg L-1 H2S, all specimens of Pseudorchomene sp. were dead after 96 h, whereas all individuals survived at 0.18 mg L-1. Moreover, Anonyx sp. had a survival rate of 17 % after 96 h at 0.24 mg L-1. A similar toxicity test was conducted with the coastal amphipod Merita sp., a detritivore, and all individuals died w

Resuscitation-Promoting Factor Accelerates Enrichment of Highly Active Tetrachloroethene/Polychlorinated Biphenyl-Dechlorinating Cultures.

The anaerobic bioremediation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) is largely impeded by difficulties in massively enriching PCB dechlorinators in short periods of time. Tetrachloroethene (PCE) is often utilized as an alternative electron acceptor to preenrich PCB-dechlorinating bacteria. In this study, resuscitation promoting factor (Rpf) was used as an additive to enhance the enrichment of the microbial communities involved in PCE/PCBs dechlorination. The results indicated that Rpf accelerates PCE dechlorination 3.8 to 5.4 times faster than control cultures. In Aroclor 1260-fed cultures, the a

Enhanced bioremediation of cyclohexaneacetic acid in offshore sediments with green synthetic iron oxide and Pseudoalteromonas sp.

Naphthenic acids (NAs) have been found to exert serious threats on offshore sediment ecosystems and human health in recent years, which entails us the urgent need for NAs remediation. Bioremediation is considered an ideal method for sediment remediation due to ecological sustainability and economic feasibility. However, current bioremediation efficiency of offshore sediments suffers from relatively slow and there has never any attempts to bioremediate offshore sediment NAs contamination hitherto. In this study, the green synthetic iron oxides (gFeOx) based on Laminaria extracts was employed to

Annual water residence time effects on thermal structure: A potential lake restoration measure?

Innovative methods to combat internal loading issues in eutrophic lakes are urgently needed to speed recovery and restore systems within legislative deadlines. In stratifying lakes, internal phosphorus loading is particularly problematic during the summer stratified period when anoxia persists in the hypolimnion, promoting phosphorus release from the sediment. A novel method to inhibit stratification by reducing residence times is proposed as a way of controlling the length of the hypolimnetic anoxic period, thus reducing the loading of nutrients from the sediments into the water column. Effects and mechanisms of organic matter regulating the methylmercury dynamics in mangrove sediments.

Mangrove ecosystems serve as an important carbon sink but also could be a hotspot that produces neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg). Although many studies have focused on mercury (Hg) contamination in this carbon-rich ecosystem, our understanding of the effects and mechanisms of the organic matter (OM) regulation of MeHg production in mangrove sediments is still limited. Here, we examined the effects of Hg contamination and OM enrichment on MeHg production in anoxic mangrove sediments and identified the major microbial guilds attending this process. The mangrove sediments possessed a high potentia

Development and microbial characterization of Bio-RD-PAOP for effective remediation of polychlorinated biphenyls.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) as typical halogenated persistent organic pollutants are widely distributed in natural environments, and can be enriched and magnified in organisms via food webs. It is consequently urgent and necessary to develop techniques to completely remove these persistent organohalides. In this study, we developed a process (Bio-RD-PAOP) by integrating microbial reductive dechlorination (Bio-RD) with subsequent persulfate activation and oxidation process (PAOP) for effective remediation of PCBs. Results showed the synergistic combination of advantages of Bio-RD and PAOP

Internal loading of phosphate in rivers reduces at higher flow velocity and is reduced by iron rich sand application: an experimental study in flumes.

Many lowland regions are afflicted with high phosphorus (P) peaks in rivers during the summer months. Static incubations of sediments have shown that reductive dissolution of ferric iron (Fe(III)) minerals in the sediment explain these P peaks. This study was set up to identify if that mechanism also dominates in a dynamic system, thereby testing the roles of water flow velocity and sediment Fe/P ratio. Decreasing flow velocity was suspected to lower the flux of dissolved oxygen (DO) towards the sediment. The role of the Fe(III)/P ratio was tested by amending iron-rich glauconite sand (GS) to

Assessing the natural and anthropogenic radionuclide activities of the Pechora River estuary: Bottom sediments and water (Arctic Ocean Basin).

This paper studies the activity of natural and technogenic radionuclides in bottom sediments and surface water of the Pechora River estuary, which is the largest Arctic river within the European part of Russia. The relevance of conducting radioecological studies of this region is associated with active oil and gas activities in the Pechora basin and the presence of potential sources of radiation hazard. The average activities of 137Cs, 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K in bottom sediments were 0.16, 18.72, 13.36, and 373.59 Bq·kg-1, respectively. The average activity of 226Ra in the bottom sediments of th

Role of sulfur biogeochemical cycle in mercury methylation in estuarine sediments: A review.

Estuaries are sinks for mercury, in which the most toxic mercury form, neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg), is produced by mercury methylators and accumulates in estuarine sediments. In the same area, the microbial sulfur cycle is triggered by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), which is considered as the main mercury methylator. In this review, we analyzed the sulfur and mercury speciation in sediments from 70 estuaries globally. Abundant mercury and sulfur species were found in the global estuarine sediments. Up to 727 μg THg/g dw and 880 ng MeHg/g dw were found in estuarine sediments, showing the

Long-term quality record (1996-2018) of coastal sediments at the complex industrial site along the Jordanian coast of the Gulf of Aqaba.

To evaluate the effect of the industrial activities on the sediment quality, we investigated long-term records of physical and chemical properties of bottom-surface sediments from a complex industrial site along the Jordanian coast of the Gulf of Aqaba. Sediment samples were collected from 10 m depth once a year from six different stations (S1-S6) and analyzed for grain size, loss on ignition (LOI), organic carbon (OC), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and heavy metal contents. Temporal variations show a constant/decreasing trend for H2S, OC, and LOI, whereas

Soft-bottom community responses in a marine area influenced by recurrent dumping activities and freshwater discharges.

The results of a 3 years monitoring program to assess the effects associated with recurrent dredged spoil disposal activity in a naturally stressed subtidal coastal area subjected to estuarine inputs are described. Changes observed through time in environmental and anthropogenic variables have been analyzed using cumulated sums and compared to macrobenthic community structure. Results revealed a scarce impact of the recurrent dumping activities, with faunal assemblages derived from the main "Tellina-venus community". The magnitude of estuarine influence appeared indeed greater on the soft-bott

Assessing the role of the "estuarine filter" for emerging contaminants: pharmaceuticals, perfluoroalkyl compounds and plasticisers in sediment cores from two contrasting systems in the southern U.K.

The environmental occurrence, fate and ecotoxicity of emerging contaminants (ECs) has been the subject of increasing research, policy and public concern over the past two decades. While a wide range of publications have examined the environmental persistence and sediment/soil interactions of ECs following their discharge into aquatic environments, the extent to which ECs are sequestered in estuarine sediments, and the impact of this on their environmental persistence and supply to the ocean, in comparison remains unclear. This Article examines the environmental concentrations of seven, relativ

Magnetically-mediated regeneration and reuse of core-shell Fe0@FeIII granules for in-situ hydrogen sulfide control in the river sediments.

A novel iron-cycling process based on core-shell iron granules, which contained zero-valent iron (Fe0) in the core and maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) on the shell (Fe0@FeIII granules), was proposed to in-situ control hydrogen sulfide in the sediments of the polluted urban rivers. The Fe0@FeIII granules added in the top sediment layer removed 97% of sulfide generated by sulfate-reducing bacteria in the sediments, and the sulfide removal capacity of virgin granules was 163 mg S/g Fe (114 mg S/g granule). The Fe0@FeIII granules removed the formed sulfide through the abiotic sulfide oxidation and precipitati

[Composition and Distribution of Biodegradable Compounds in the Macrophyte Dominated Zone of Lake Taihu].

In shallow eutrophic lakes, benthic bioclastic deposits accumulate abundant organic carbon derived from macrophyte detritus. Taking the typical macrophyte-dominated Xukou Bay as the study area, field investigations were performed using sediment cores to evaluate benthic phytodetritus accumulation. Specifically, nutrient contents, TOC/TN ratios, pigmentation, and biodegradable compounds were measured as descriptive parameters. The results show that the benthic bioclastic deposit had accumulated abundant pigments, nutrients, and biodegradable compounds derived from macrophytes detritus. These we

Optimization of pretreatment procedure for MeHg determination in sediments and its applications.

Methylmercury (MeHg) in sediment is difficult to be determined due to its low concentration and binding compounds like sulfide and organic matter. Moreover, wet sediment samples have been suggested to behave differently from certified reference materials in MeHg analysis. Optimal pretreatment procedure for MeHg determination in sediments has not been ascertained and whether the procedure could apply to sediment samples with complex matrix merits further research. This work firstly compared recovery results of five pretreatment procedures for MeHg determination using ERM-CC580. Using the optima
