A personal account is given of the reconstruction and development of human genetics in Germany during the years following World War 2. An important stimulus was funding, as a result of the recognition of the genetic hazards of atomic radiation. Starting from 1960, human genetics institutes were progressively established throughout West Germany; comparable development was later in East Germany because of political factors. A surveillance study was performed throughout Germany from November 2001 to June 2002 to assess the prevalence of linezolid-resistant isolates among Gram-positive bacteria from routine susceptibility data and to compare the in-vitro activity of linezolid to that of other antibacterial agents. To conceptualize strategies for regional environmental management in the Trier region, extensive urban meteorological measurements were undertaken. Weather stations from the German Weather Service and the state Pollution Monitoring Network were used as well as a number of our automatic meteorological stations and a mobile platform (instrumented van). The bioclimatic conditions in the city of Trier are affected by the valley of the Moselle River. AIMS: This study evaluated the techniques and short-term results of surgical treatment for esophageal cancer in Germany by a nationwide representative survey.
METHODS: In 2000 a questionnaire including 63 structured items concerning indication, technique, number of procedures, complications, and hospital mortality was sent to 308 randomly selected general, gastrointestinal, and thoracic surgeons and all university hospitals in Germany (20% of all surgeons). During the years 1988-1997 listeriosis was detected in nine (2.4%) of 373 perished hares, in one of these cases calicivirus was additionally found. The listeriosis occurred sporadically. Granulomatous hepatosplenomegaly was the main lesion observed. Pregnancy is an important predisposing factor for the outbreak of listeriosis: six of the nine cases were hares post abortum or with retention of macerated foetuses in utero.--Six Listeria strains were serotyped and all belonged to serovar 1/2a.
