Morphology and molecular characterization of a new species of Tereancistrum parasite from the gills of Brycon nattereri.

A new species of Tereancistrum Kritsky, Thatcher & Kayton, 1980, collected from the gills of Brycon nattereri (Bryconidae) in the Cerrado, in the state of Goiás, Brazil, is described based on morphological and molecular data, based on the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) gene region. Tereancistrum campanum n. sp. is distinguished from all its congeners by the unique 'bell-shaped' accessory piece in the male copulatory complex. Molecular analysis revealed that the specimens analyzed formed a distinct group from other Tereancistrum sequences and that the sequences of Tereancist

Transcriptomic Response of Mussel Gills After a Vibrio splendidus Infection Demonstrates Their Role in the Immune Response.

Mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) are filter feeder bivalves that are constantly in contact with a wide range of microorganisms, some of which are potentially pathogenic. How mussels recognize and respond to pathogens has not been fully elucidated to date; therefore, we investigated the immune mechanisms that these animals employ in response to a bacterial bath infection from the surrounding water, mimicking the response that mussels mount under natural conditions. After the bath infection, mussels were able to remove the bacteria from their bodies and from the water tank. Accordingly, antib

A New Genus of Ergasilidae (Copepoda: Cyclopoida) from the Gills of Astyanax fasciatus (Cuvier, 1819) (Actinopterygii: Characidae).

PURPOSE: To describe a new genus and a new species of an ectoparasitic ergasilid (Copepoda, Ergasilidae) parasite of the red-tailed lambari, Astyanax fasciatus, from Jurumirim Reservoir (Upper Paranapanema River), São Paulo State, Brazil. METHODS: The host fish were collected using multi-panel gill nets. The gill of each fish was washed and examined in a stereo microscope for copepods. The copepods found were stored in 70% ethanol, cleared in lactic acid, and mounted in Hoyer's medium. Some specimens were dissected in glycerol medium and then each dissected part was mounted on individual slid

Methacarn preserves mucus integrity and improves visualization of amoebae in gills of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.).

Two aqueous fixation methods (modified Davidson's solution and modified Davidson's solution with 2% (w/v) Alcian blue) were compared against two non-aqueous fixation methods (methacarn solution and methacarn solution with 2% (w/v) Alcian blue) along with the standard buffered formalin fixation method to (a) improve preservation of the mucous coat on Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., gills and (b) to examine the interaction between the amoebae and mucus on the gill during an infection with amoebic gill disease. Aqueous fixatives demonstrated excellent cytological preservation but failed to deliv

Atrazine promotes immunomodulation by melanomacrophage centre alterations in spleen and vascular disorders in gills from Oreochromis niloticus.

Atrazine is a herbicide that is banned in Europe but remains widely used on different types of crops in several countries in the American continent. Atrazine is known to be an endocrine disruptor and its effects on gonads have been extensively reported, but the toxic action on other organs is poorly documented. In this paper, we investigated the toxicity of atrazine on the gills and spleens of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). The median lethal concentration (LC50), capable of killing one-half of the test animals was calculated, and sublethal concentrations of atrazine were used in a semis

Liver, gills, and skin histopathology and heavy metal content of the Danube sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus Linnaeus, 1758).

The sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus L.) is a bottom-feeding fish species with a direct exposure to contaminants from water and sediments. Although heavy metal pollution is believed to be one of the main threats to the sterlet population in the Danube River basin, there is a lack of knowledge of the exact impact of heavy metals on their survival. In the present study, effects of heavy metal pollution on sterlet in the Danube basin were assessed as well as the utility of different sterlet organs and tissues as indicators of heavy metal contamination. The sterlet were sampled at three different sites

Phosphorylated intermediate of the ouabain-insensitive, Na(+)-stimulated ATPase in rat kidney cortex and rainbow trout gills.

Several tissues from different animals, including the rat kidney and the freshwater rainbow trout gills, show an ouabain-insensitive, furosemide-sensitive, Na(+)-stimulated ATPase activity, which has been associated with the active control of the cell volume. This Na-ATPase is Mg(2+) dependent and it is inhibited by vanadate, which can be taken as an indication that this enzyme is a P-type ATPase. The P-type ATPases are known to form a phosphorylated intermediate during their catalytic cycle, where the phosphate binds an aspartyl residue at the enzyme's substrate site. In the current study, we

Bacterial endosymbionts in the gills of the deep-sea wood-boring bivalves Xylophaga atlantica and Xylophaga washingtona.

Bacterial endosymbionts found in gill tissues in several bivalve families convert otherwise unavailable energy sources (sulfide, methane, or cellulose) to forms readily metabolized by their hosts. We investigated the existence of such a symbiosis in two species of Xylophaga (family Pholadidae). The genus Xylophaga includes opportunistic species that are the predominant colonizers of wood at depths greater than 150 m. It has been hypothesized that, like their shallow-water counterparts the shipworms (family Teredinidae), species of Xylophaga utilize wood for nutrition. Results from transmission

Gas gill respiration enhances underwater copulation in a water scorpion.

To overcome physiological constraints during submergence, many air-breathing aquatic animals utilize an air store. If this store functions as a gas gill for dissolved oxygen uptake, this will extend underwater copulation when atmospheric oxygen is inaccessible. We tested this hypothesis using water scorpion Nepa hoffmanni (Hemiptera: Nepidae). Our field surveys showed that, although N. hoffmanni typically inhabit shallow water, males cannot access atmospheric oxygen via their respiratory siphon during underwater copulation. Laboratory experiments revealed active oxygen use from the air store b

Clinical presentation of tics and Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Tics are the most common hyperkinetic manifestations during development. The clinical phenomenology of motor tics ranges from mild twitches affecting a single facial muscle to orchestrated contractions of different muscular districts resembling purposeful behaviors. Likewise, the repertoire of vocal tics (also called phonic tics) covers the whole spectrum between isolated grunting noises and meaningful strings of words. Simple and complex tics arguably sit on a continuum of symptom severity and respond to the same treatment interventions. The diagnosis of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) i

Pharmacologic treatment of tics and Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Treating children and adults with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) remains a clinical challenge and typically requires a multidisciplinary approach, owing to the complexity of the disorder and the frequent presence of comorbidities such as obsessive-compulsive disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. This chapter focuses on the pharmacologic management of tics in the context of GTS. It reviews key considerations in the selection of therapeutic agents from the broad range of pharmacologic options available in clinical practice. The strongest evidence supports the use of dopami

Noninvasive brain stimulation for Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

This chapter explores evidence for the effectiveness of noninvasive brain stimulation (NIBS) for tic disorders and explores what the future may hold for these approaches. NIBS can be achieved through several means, including electrical stimulation of peripheral nerves and transcranial cortical stimulation using electrical or magnetic stimulation. Each of these techniques will be discussed with a focus on current evidence of effectiveness in treating tics, benefits, limitations, and current unknowns.

Repurposing of a gill gene regulatory program for outer-ear evolution.

How new structures emerge during evolution has long fascinated biologists. An example is how the diminutive bones of the mammalian middle ear arose from ancestral fish jawbones1. By contrast, the evolutionary origin of the outer ear, another mammalian innovation, remains a mystery, partly because it is supported by non-mineralized elastic cartilage, which is rarely recovered in fossils. Whether the outer ear arose de novo or through the reuse of ancestral developmental programs has remained unknown. Here we show that the outer ear shares gene regulatory programs with the gills of fishes and am

Slips of the tongue in patients with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Motor and vocal tics are the main symptom of Gilles de la Tourette-syndrome (GTS). A particular complex vocal tic comprises the utterance of swear words, termed coprolalia. Since taboo words are socially inappropriate, they are normally suppressed by people, which implies cognitive control processes. METHOD: To investigate the control of the unintentional pronunciation of taboo words and the associated processes of conflict monitoring, we used the "Spoonerisms of Laboratory Induced Predisposition" (SLIP) paradigm. Participants read multiple inductor word pairs with the same phonem

Illusion of agency in patients with Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome.

The sense of agency refers to the conscious experience of authorship and control over actions. The voluntary or involuntary nature of tics, which are the hallmark of Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome (GTS), is unclear. Here, we studied metacognitive processing of agency in an explicit agency task on non-medicated and medicated GTS patients compared to matched controls. In this task, the participants made judgements of control and performance after completion of a computerized game where they had to catch targets with a cursor by moving the computer mouse. The task included several conditions, whe

Altered perceptual binding in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) is a common multifaceted neuropsychiatric disorder. Research in GTS has traditionally focussed on mechanisms underlying changes in motor processes in these patients. There is, however, growing interest in GTS related sensory phenomena. According to the Theory of Event-coding (TEC), sensory stimuli do not only serve representational functions but also action-related functions. In the current study, we use the TEC framework to examine whether the way perceptual features are processed is altered in GTS. The results show that basic perceptual processes differ b

Pathological glutamatergic neurotransmission in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome is a hereditary, neuropsychiatric movement disorder with reported abnormalities in the neurotransmission of dopamine and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Spatially focalized alterations in excitatory, inhibitory and modulatory neurochemical ratios within specific functional subdivisions of the basal ganglia, may lead to the expression of diverse motor and non-motor features as manifested in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome. Current treatment strategies are often unsatisfactory thus provoking the need for further elucidation of the underlying pathophysiology. In view of

Motor-cortical interaction in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

BACKGROUND: In Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) increased activation of the primary motor cortex (M1) before and during movement execution followed by increased inhibition after movement termination was reported. The present study aimed at investigating, whether this activation pattern is due to altered functional interaction between motor cortical areas. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: 10 GTS-patients and 10 control subjects performed a self-paced finger movement task while neuromagnetic brain activity was recorded using Magnetoencephalography (MEG).
